Mine came with the white ones, so I requested the dealership to change to the black. They had to special order, but no charge.

    what are lug nuts?

off topic: correction -- "mija" is short for "mi hija" means my daughter, or a name to call a young lady you care about.
  • djohnson64djohnson64 Member Posts: 43
Lug nuts are the nuts holding the wheels.
I don't know which ones you have but for me, even though the car is a 2000 model, it came with the white nuts which are supposedly more prone to rust. AFAIK, all the 2000 and 2001 should come with black nuts.

To Drew and Ken also to Maristella,

Mine is 2000 and it came with the black LUG NUT I guess I'm lucky Huh, and it was built on Jan 10,2000

Off Topic.... Mija...Why did you change your old log-in name?
  • drew_drew_ Member Posts: 3,382
Mine has the white (it's more silver, actually) lugs and I haven't noticed any rust...yet. Frankly, I didn't even notice that the '00s had the black lugs! Perhaps it is because I have the 2nd batch of '00s to roll off the factory floor.

BTW, do you think it would be correct to call them lug nuts? I ask because unlike other vehicles, these are not actually nuts; there're no bolts sticking out of the axles because of the hub-centric design. I just refer to them as "lugs", but I'm not sure if that's correct either.
  • drew_drew_ Member Posts: 3,382
So that's why Pilar (from NBC's Passions ) keeps saying "Mija" when talking to her daughter, Teressa :-)

Glad to see you posting again!
  • drew_drew_ Member Posts: 3,382
But hey, out of the mistake, you got your brakes changed for free of charge :-) I wouldn't mind that...actually, I'm going to make sure that they do change it before the 2 year wear and tear warranty expires this coming October. All of the hard braking on the track in the accident avoidance and advanced driving classes should wear them out quicker :-) Let's see...one class in March, two in April, and one in early October. ;-)

After 2 winter the chrome nut cover still has its luminous and it goes with wheel very well...

    Drew,

If we want to be mechanicaly correct and to simplify, how about calling them wheel retainers?

Perhaps they figured, why not just replace the entire thing instead of cleaning it up :-)

For driving events, try http://www.drivingevents.com . Your local MBCCA or BMWCCA section may also have events. That's what I'll be going to, as well as a free BMW Canada organised event. I'm really looking forward to the latter since I'll get to drive one of their cars and push it hard. :-)

I'll settle for Frank's terminology...lug bolts! :-) I believe the owner's manual doesn't even refer to them specifically.

Yes, I saw the coupe. It's a weird vehicle though, and I'm not quite sure what to make of it. The Volvo safety concept is also very interesting. I mean, transparent A-pillars using glass bricks inside to maintain structure strength!? Wonder how much that cost! Looks like we'll also be going into 4 and 5 point seat belts in the future. People already refuse to buckle up with a 3 point belt. Can you imagine the 5 point? >>

...will be enamored with the idea of a 5-point belt, unless they're eunuchs.

    <<#925 of 966  sunroof rattles by senc  Jan 10, 2001 (05:31 am)

My '99 ML320 has a strange thumping/knocking noise coming from the front of the sunroof above approx. 65-70 mph. It never seems to repeat for the service dept.(they are not near an open highway). Has anyone experienced that? I do have a deflector(aftermarket) on it and they tell me I need that removed for them to properly diagnose it. By the way, Beck in charlotte gave me great service and vehicle drove better after service at 36k miles than new. Any ideas on the sunroof noise? >>

...more detail, like, is the sunroof open when it makes the thumping noise?

Taking a complete shot in the dark, and supposing that the sunroof is open, perhaps the aftermarket deflector is creating a vacuum behind it, and making the OEM popup deflector flutter, which is the noise you're hearing. If so, perhaps the popup deflector needs tightening.

Either way, you probably should remove the aftermarket deflector to determine a baseline, first.

...after the posts last week by DT, Ometofu and Rexc. Is it my recollection that the Hella retrofit that Rexc did, cost in excess of $2400? Each headlight with, lamp, igniter and ballast was more than $1200?

And, were the Philips HIDs, around $600 total?
  • rexconde1rexconde1 Member Posts: 278
Whew If it were that much ($2400) I would be giving blood at the bank every week.

The total cost for the lamps were $1500 for me at the beginning of last year. But there is a dealer in California that charges $600/ capsule or $1200 total. The cost includs the capsule which has the ignitor and ballast built-in. Some of the cars have external ignitors and ballasts.

Of course now you have to find a source for the conversion plugs or make the wiring conversion your self.

As for the Philips, I have seen them as low as $535/pair.

    bettlebug,

yes, the philips retrofits available on numerous websites are in the high 500 range. the deal with the retrofits is that the bulbs and ballast are made by philips. acutally, some have seen that the ballast has the philips brand on it but they are in actual fact made by HELLA. most of these companies on the web get these components and 'put them together' for customers. I choose the wiring and connectors so quality may vary accros the board.

Some companies' retrofits are better than others, so if one is interested in retrofiting, got do a bit of research.

rob's retrofit is from hella and his comes with the headlamp capsule which if i'm not wrong comes with a clear lens. the philips retrofits we're talking about retain the ml's exisiting headlamp capsule.

i'm still deciding on which to get, rob's retrofit of the philips one. the deal with the philips one is that they also don't come with autolevel feature but some companies claim they are 'beam corrected' and won't cause any glare problems. i'll have to see for myself. i've heard of some instances where philips retrofits were done and extreme glare was produced. light just everywhere ! that you don' want =)

also, all HID systems that are not factory installed are considered illegal in the US.

LA's been raining for like 14 hours straight ! that's my snow =)time to try to go back to sleep, it's 5am and i severe jetlag.

did the dealer replace both front and back brakes ?

i actually heard my ml's brakes squeal yesterday. now i think it's the back ! haha. just great.
    i'll keep listening ...

drew, i'll take it in again and i'll have new brakes all around ! hehe ..

i've decided if i wanna do the hella retrofit, i'd like the full deal - which includes autoleveling feature... if not i'll save a bunch and go with philips.

    Beetlebug:
The roof is closed when it makes this noise and it seems to do it whether the sun shield is open or closed, but the glass is CLOSED. The wind deflector I have in it is an early aftermarket adhesive one. I got it before MB started offering one of their own.

How do folks feel about the comparability of these two tires? I have heard that some prefer the Dunlops (I have the Generals) yet MB uses both and the UTQG is slightly better for the Generals. I need some tires quickly and have found the Dunlops almost impossible to find. I can't find anything at all in a 255/65 16 at tire shops and the MB dealers locally stock the Generals. Tirerack is out of the Dunlops (they are on National back order) and they also just raised the price up to $95. TIA.
  • bob259bob259 Member Posts: 280
I have the Generals and like them, so far (only 7K). However, if I was replacing my tires I would get the new Michelin.
  • kenyeekenyee Member Posts: 738
Where did you get the lug bolt covers? And can you leave them on when you take the wheels off or will that scuff them up?
They do add a lot to the look ;-)

The new Michelin Cross Terrain won't be available in 255/65-16 until sometime in March per Michelin.

Clarification- I was kidding Biker when I said I heard a "crunching" sound when backing up..there is no crunching sound. :)

jwomac- Surprised to hear the lug nuts rusted so quickly on the 2000, I thought those were changed out with the '99 models.

Biker- I thought mija meant daughter as well, which is why I didn't understand it. Oh well...
  • rexconde1rexconde1 Member Posts: 278
No one even knows if the auto leveling is retrofitable yet, I am having a few people look it up but so far it doesnt look good. Like I said before, you dont need the Auto-level. Just get the HIDs and you will be happy with the result.

Now I am confused...who is the maristella answer the meaning of "mija" she corrected me that it should be "mi hija" are you the same person? Anyway, welcome back. SORRY FOLKS THIS IS NOT ALL ABOUT THE LUG NUTS OR LUG BOLTS OR RUTTLE OR SHACKY...FORGIVE ME, Mr. HOST :-)

Need recommendation for cleaning and treating the leather seats.
Something which I don't have to spend few hours applying! (I'm
    lazy, ok! :-))

How about the non-leather areas? Is "Armor All" recommended?

Just want to hear from those who have been cleaning their ML's
    leather seats for a while.

    http://www.leatherique

Is the product I use a two part system and something I have done every 5K (3x) to my 2000 Ml 320.

The drivers seat gets the most wear, I'm in Central FL and I every time I use it the vehicle looks to show room quality.

I do everything dash, side doors with the product(s).

This is the preferred product to many Senior care care users.

Lexol leather care or Mcguire leather care who supply MB cleaning products...Now for applying I cannot answer that because I always take my time to do mine If you are still to L.....Y Just pay your kids to do it for you. Hey I'm just joking OK.. But seruiously those products is what I used.

Then, I won't be able to clean the leather for a long time.
First, it takes 9 months, then how many years to train the kids?!
    You got the picture! :-)

    Thanks for the recommendation.

What do you use to apply it? It leaves this weird smell on my hands that takes a while to go away :-)
  • klsehklseh Member Posts: 6
Can you get it at a local store or you have to special order it?
  • kiiwiikiiwii Member Posts: 318
Do all the leather cleaner or conditioner make the leather look glossy?

Has anyone used Mcquire leather care? Is it good? I heard Lexol is pretty nice, but I'm too lazy for the 2-step treatment =P
  • biker5biker5 Member Posts: 199
Hey! Ken, Have you try the rubber gloves when you treat your leather ? Thats what I used. I put that leather care directly to the glove and apply it, then wipe it down with soft cotton cloth to even up the application.

Same application with mcguire leather care.. Yes it can get glossy for a couple of days then its back to dull look.
  • kenyeekenyee Member Posts: 738
    Hmm..that's a good idea :-)
The Leatherique instructions say the heat from your hand helps get the stuff into the leather though. Tradeoff I guess :-P

I've recently been dealing with Hoehn Motors in Carlsbad, CA (Phone # 800.675.1993 for MB parts) who is a MB, Porsche, Audi and Acura dealer.

I've found that their prices are usually less then Clair's and their service is SUPER.

So if your looking for anything like a GPS, Xenon's, or any MB parts I highly suggest you give them a try.

Too bad I live in NY and on the other side of the country because if there service is as good as their Parts folks it must be one of the best.

Can someone point me to the posts that were on chrome vs stainless side steps / running boards. I am in need of some step to get in my ML easily. Didn't think I needed them at first.
I would also appreciate someone who had self installed the side-steps to point me to his/her previous posts on the experience.
    Thank you.

only 26.95$ people.... problem solved. I even bought a set for my parent's E. the rust problem is acrossed on all Mercedes' lines.

    Bob259,
The price is not always low, those price are for online buyer. You know why because I live here in San Diedo CA. So I got my parts and accessory thru online from valley motors in Maryland.
  • sydney6sydney6 Member Posts: 64
I have always been very well treated by Hoehn, and I, too, live here in (rainy today) San Diego county. But Biker5, if Hoehn and the place in Maryland are similarly priced, why aside from sales tax, would you not buy online from Hoehn?
