As long as you are driving a gasoline engine, with fuel pumped from underground storage tanks, there will be some amount of water getting into your car's fuel system. The only reliable way to avoid the problem you've experienced is to use gas line antifreeze. Fuel injectors and sensors don't care, except that the injectors will work as designed when you do.

I feel so bad when I hear of the weather problems you all talk about. I'll probably get heck for this but: It's currently 82degrees out and I'm heading home with the sunroof open. Yesterday was 80 and I washed and waxed my kitty. Hope you all enjoy a warm cozy house tonight and drive safe. Night-night.

Thank you for your input. You were the more enthusiastic and responsive group by far! I only got a handful of posts from Eclipse drivers. I spoke with my mom yesterday and she's leaning towards the Cougar. It drives very similarly to her 240SX.

The Saturn coupes are too plain. The Toyota Solara is too expensive for a 2-door Camry and also too plain. The Chrysler coupes are out of the question with such poor reliability records.

Personally, I thought Mitsubishi screwed up with the new Eclipse styling. To me, it's ugly, and much less fun without the turbo. Obviously, Mitsu was going after a different audience.

The Cougar is a great looking car. If it's junk, she can sell it and buy a 2003 Nissan Z.

Cold weather + no garage + good gas station + properly maintained car = NO PROBLEMS, even at -15/20F.

Haven't had to use a can of heat in years.

Do I understand that we're having a Cougar Winterfest at Malibu's place? I should have my passport in a couple of weeks so I can get into California.

Good point, I was planning on charging a dollar for everyone that enters the house so I can pay the PG&E bill. Or at least buy flashlight and batteries...I have a little problem with candles, I'm sure you understand.

I have used fuel injector cleaner/water remover/fuel system cleaner in every car I have owned, including the Cougar.

I swear by the stuff, it really does keep your injectors clean, really does keep water in your gas lines from freezing.

I consider it to be an inexpensive alternative to having to get my fuel injectors cleaned.

The last time I drove into Ca. (from Yuma), there was a customs station where we had to stop and get the car inspected for various types of vegatation & plants. It was actually tougher than getting into Mexico, and all we wanted to do was drink for another hour in Winterhaven Ca.

    Update on my driver's seat:

I took my car to the dealer on Jan.2. They gave me my car back the next day. They said they had to order the part and will send me a postcard as soon as they receive the part.

A month goes by, I call them back. Guess what?!? The part came in on Jan. 5. Noone has bothered calling me or dropping a postcard. So I've made another appointment on the 15th of Feb. to get my seat fixed.

    That's Mercury service for you.

I went to Meineke today to have my breaks checked. They told me that I need new pads front and back, which is to be expected after 40,000 miles.

They also told me that my front rotors are too low to be machined and would have to be replaced.

Has anyone else had this problem? They are not trying to BS me, the front rotors are worn down, however it does not seem right to me that a car should have to get new rotors after only 40,000 miles. I mean the pads should have worn down, not the rotors.

I would expect the rotors to have to be replaced if the pads had worn down and had worn against the rotors, but this has not happened.

i am experiencing the exact thing with my front rotors at 31,000 miles. Either the previous owner (i bought my car in september with 27,000 on it) thought he/she was Mario Andretti or cougar rotors are poop!

I am reluctant to pay for the rotors myself because i see NO REASON they should have to be replaced so soon. I am reasonably sure they aren't covered under warranty so i'll likely have to eat the cost. It does perplex me though that the rotors are in this bad a shape so soon. I also don't know if my rotors were or were not replaced by the previous owner per the TSB for the zinc coating / squeaking problem that the early '99's had.

Maybe MWS0520 can possibly provide some insight.

Had my driver's seat back upholstery replaced yesterday. When I had the lumbar fixed way back when, they evidently didn't get the fabric around the back release right, and it was rippped away from the trim piece. Mentioned it when I was in for my brake valve recall and they ordered the part.

Would you believe, when they re-assembled the seat, they now have the lumbar support set so that it's near what I would call max when it's dialed down to minimum. And adjusting it to a firmer setting will break your spine. At minimum, it feels like a softball in my back. I'll live with it until I need my next oil change, and then giv'em hell.

Loaner was an Escort w/8500 mi. Boy, is that another crackerbox!!!!!! The engine felt like it was trying to make a milkshake out of me. I am thoroughly spoiled by the V6 in the Cougar, although the 4's that I had in my last 3 cars were very smooth. I guess that the Escort doesn't have balance shafts, and they just let it shake, rattle, and roll (slowly).

Front rotors -- Just an FYI to those folks talking about worn front rotors. There is a woman at work who has a '99 Cougar V-6 ATX who complained the other day about having to replace her front rotors. I got the impression that the dealership was charging her for the repair, because she was not happy about having to fork over for new rotors.

I wonder if this is an up-and-coming issue with '99 Cougars. Are you other rotor rousers driving '99 Cougars or newer models?

Tire update: Pirelli P4000s -- Well, I've finally gotten out on the interstate again with my nearly two month old Pirelli P4000s. Keep in mind -- since December 22, I've had them installed, re-balanced, re-balanced again and aligned, and re-balanced a third time (as of yesterday). Between the 2nd and 3rd balancings (even a word?), my car had been in the shop for 3 weeks, so the tires barely have 1500 miles on them.

The tires aren't the quietest on the interstate, but they do seem a little grippier. Kauffman Tire (GA and other southern states) offered to replace them with a new set if this last balancing doesn't work things out. We'll see.

Anyone have any similar Pirelli tire experiences? Fish8? How are your P6000s coming along?

    Later,

I plan to take my car in next week for some warranty work and to have the brakes checked. Hopefully they will not say anything about the rotors. However if I do need new rotors, I will order a set of performance rotors from KKM.

burnsmr4: My Pirelli's are doing fine, except: I am getting a slight feathering(wearing abnormally) on the outer edges of the front tires.
I have no idea what is causing this. Though, I still experience a slight steering wheel vibration at speeds between 60-70mph. I don't know if this is causing the tire wear or not.
According to the dealer(when I inquired during my last service) they said the vibration was just an "annomoly" and normal for this car.

My tire have about 1500-2000 miles on them and they have been aligned once and balanced twice. Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.

Scored rotors can be turned down to restore a smooth surface. The key is what is the thickness left after turning. The service dept. has that number and I would refuse to pay for new rotors unless they proved to me that the rotors would be below that minimum after turning. It's easier and more profitable for them to just put on new ones. Sorry, but this is considered a "maintenance" item just like the pads and not covered by warranty.

If you watched "Ed" on NBC last night, his girlfriends Cougar appeared again. And yes, it is silver.

Today we formally announced the cancellation of the Cougar High Output program (also known as the Cougar S). This was a very tough decision but the right decision. We will dedicate our resources to bringing out more feature cars like the Cougar C2 and the Zn which appeal more to consumers in this segment.

We regret any inconveniences to our customers by this decision.

Unfortunatly, no. There is no more power from the two mentioned packages - only appearance upgrades. I believe the new designations are on the 2001's, and one used to be the Sun & Fun, the other I thought someone mentioned that they saw a commercial for. Maybe the limited 2001, similar to Malibu's fallen (original) Cougar.

    Correct me if I'm wrong.

Sadly, I'm not surprised that the Cougar S went the way of the carrier pigeon. As enthusiatic as we are about the Cougar, we also represent a rather small piece of the FMC pie. As long as folks buy multitudes of F-series pickups and SUVs(which happen to have nice profit margins), it really isn't in FMC's corporate interest to put a whole lot of emphasis into the sports coupe market. Let's hope the aftermarket support for the Cougar stays strong, and those of us who want more ponies/better performance can then upgrade our cats as much as we want.

I have been monitoring this site only for news about the Cougar S. My Mercury dealer gave me back my deposit a long time ago because he said he felt guilty about holding on to it for so long. The Toyota Celica, Mitsubishi Eclipse and Dodge Stratus R/T no longer have to worry about direct competition from the Cougar. I'm switching to the Focus ZX3 site for information on an affordable Ford product with performance. At least they have an SVT model to look forward to. I regret having to make this move as the Cougar is the obvious choice for performance, and the Focus should have the all-show-and-no-go options. But the marketing geniouses obviously know more than I do.

The C2 package is strickly cosmetic. It is blue, with blue gauges, radio surround face plate, black leather seats with with a blue Cougar emblem stitched into the seat backs, and blue cougar emblem caps on the wheels, and a different spoiler. I, personally, don't think its worth the extra money or even that attractive. But that's just me. The Zn is Zinc Yellow, and thats about all I know. I would like to see some packages with better colors(lazer red, tropic green, black, or charcoal gray), and maybe even some of the luxury features offered on the discontinued European version(climate control, etc), plus of course, a REAL tilt steering wheel and a few extra horses.

I've been looking around the websites and I think I am going to order some new rotors and pads from SP Motorsports and have them installed at Meineke.

I am thinking about the Auto Specialty front AND rear rotors. I am also going to go with Mintex A/F Street Pads.

I would really like to go with cross drilled rotors, but I really don't want to spend that much money.

I can get new front and rear Auto Specialty rotors plus Mintex A/F street pads for 350.00.

Meineke said they would install everything for about 160.00 adding up to 510.00, which is about the same price they would have charged me for their pads, their new front rotors and to have my old rotors turned.

I had considered just going with just the front Autospecialty rotors, or maybe even getting cross drilled front rotors and sticking with the old machined rotors for the time being. However, I read a post were someone screwed up their braking and wrecked their Acura by updating their front brakes and not their rears so I will try to do everything together.

I will probably order the components tommorrow, I plan on shopping around to see if I can get a better price than what Meineke is offering.

As the Cougar S is sent to that big drawing board in the sky...we are left to look for other speedy small cars entering the market. See the Renault Sport Clio V-6 and Ford Focus SVT in the March 2001 issue of C&D. Wicked automobiles. Poor little Cougar...no mods for you. Oh, well.

I think it is sad that the Cougar is going to go the same route as it's cousin the Contour.

A fine 4 door sports sedan that didn't get the marketing it deserved because it competed against Ford's precious Taurus.

I just hope that their will be a Focus based Cougar replacement so that the Cougar name doesn't die.

The Cougar is still one of the best looking cars on the road. Ford has done a great job with the interior upgrades and it only needed a 30 horsepower boost and maybe a functional hoodscoop to freshen up the styling a bit, and it would have stole back some sales that it had lost to the Celica.

    Sad, how sad.

Grrrr...and here I was about to post the news I had just read about FMC's determination to keep Mercury alive.

Well, in all honesty, I don't know about the cougar now. I was seriously thinking about getting the S. The coug's still on my shopping list, but it just lost a few points. I know this doesn't matter to everybody, but performance is one of the items on my hitlist.

The C2 is a gorgeous car though.

burnsmr4: the clio? #*@$ YEA! That car is sweet. I really wish more manfacturers would consider bringing their pocket rockets to the USA. I would love to see the Clio, as well as the cougar's lil' brother, the puma, come to the states. However, I doubt we will ever see them here. Small cars just don't appeal to the big, inefficient taste of Americans. Supermini's like the Ka or Audi A2 would never survive here, as sweet as they look. I prefer to blame this, as always, on SUVs.

(If you like kick-but little pocket rockets with really really slick designs, then check the international websites for the manufacturers. Best bet is the UK sites. Just use .co.uk instead of .com. ie www.ford.co.uk You can look at japanese sites too (co.jp) but it's usually all garbled so all you can do is guess-click and ooooo at the pics.)

PS: MWS, thanks for leveling with us.

Gambit -- what's worse is that, when vehicles like the Clio cross the pond to the US, they're stripped of their inherent speed and driver value. The BMW M3 has, up until this model year (correct me if I'm wrong), always been less than its European counterpart in terms of maximum HP and speed.

You can see the difference between what they get and what we settle for by comparing the aforementioned pocket rockets. The Focus SVT puts out 170HP to drive a 2700lbs. car. The Sport Clio V-6 (notice the cramming of the V-6 into this car) utilizes 223HP to move a 2900lbs. car. Y'all do the math (although this could be really close).

    Again...oh, well...

Wiped out 1000 attaboys, maybe more.

For those really seriously in hot rodding, the only solution is now an engine swap. Find a crunched Contour SVT, pull the mill, and drop it into the Cougar. Should fit without any real trouble as they're the same basic assembly.

While you're at it, add the limited slip differential.

    Voila!! Instant Cougar S.

Now, MWS, was that so hard??? No serious engineering required. Just off the shelf parts, a few good magazine reviews, and a sales boost for the end of the current Cougar run.

I do feel that Ford is treating Mercury like a red headed stepchild though.

Should there be a next generation Cougar, please put a performance version in the line from the start. I think that you'll be surprised. And, a rebodied Focus ain't gonna get it!!!! Too small, and too tall.

That's too bad about the Cougar S. :-( Over in the Hatchbacks Cougar discussion, someone posted a link to a Detroit News article. There is a brief mention of the limited future for the Cougar.

Btw, for your convenience, the Hatchbacks Cougar discussion has been cloned to the CSG folder.

    Alright, I'm confused now.

From what I've been reading, did Mercury provide the C2 and Zn as REPLACEMENTS for the S?

Now does this make ANY sense? Hmm... we're going to make a high performance version to seek more people in the younger, performance market. Nah, let's scrape it and just use different paint instead. Yes, Cougar S shoppers will really be interested in yellow or deep blue paint instead.

I remember reading all the early reviews about the New Edge cougar. They all stated the same mission for the cougar: to win Mercury a loyal following of younger buyers. The cougar was doing a great job of this... until FMC started pulling its support out from under it.

Abandonment of the S, and the revelation of the new Marauder boat show that Mercury has gone back to where it came from. It has dropped its mission of appealing to younger buyers. Instead Mercury has decided to stick to its traditional image as an old-people car for grandma and grandpa. (Not that I have anything against grandma or grandpa. I just don't like the cars they drive.)

The demise of the Cougar S is saddening, but not surprising to me. The Cougar has always been marketed for women (no offense to the male owners) and Mercury believes there aren't many women out there would would buy a 5-speed souped up version. Case in point: my mom. As some of you know, she is in the market for a Cougar. When I told her about the S, she was excited until I mentioned that there wouldn't be an automatic transmission available. Besides, there are plenty of go-fast aftermarket products to make your kitty scream, and the parts are higher in quality anyway. *Disclaimer* I do not own a Cougar, but your owners group is pretty cool. Reminds me of my RX-7 owners club.
