    I went to the website that you mentioned and it is good but I did not see a TSB that addressed the cold feet problem. This is when the heat control is in the "at your feet" position but it still feels cold. My truck is a 2001 4wd Quad Dakota. Thanks

    Possibly stuck open or opening too quickly?
    Or perhaps the air blend door is not postioned properly thus allowing too much cool air into the mix.

    The thermostat is ok because the heat coming out of the upper vents feels like a blow torch. I think the kinda cold feet is a design issue built into the truck. Just hoping a TSB addressed that. Not a huge issue but I have noticed the lack of good floor heat since truck was new.

    TSB 24-05-00, issued 6/23/2000, is entitled "Poor Heat Distribution To Driver's Feet." It says it applies to Dakotas built before 5/8/2000. According to DC, if the driver complains that the right foot is warmer than the left, there's a high-tech solution: the "technician" is to drill a 3/4-inch hole in the left side of the heat duct that ends just above the gas pedal. The TSB also says the work is reimbursable under the warranty. I haven't done it yet (global warming or just random weather in general has kept Maryland winters mild since I got my 2K QC), but after my one experience driving through Vermont at -15 deg, trying to keep my left foot tucked close to my right, I'll drill that hole before I go back north in winter. I'm lucky that my public library offers on-line access to the Alldata-pro database, so I can find the full text of the TSBs without much effort.

    Yeah I have a 2001 with the same problem and I'm not sure a TSB will fix it. I believe it's just a poor design. The cab gets warm but on bottom at the foot level it's very cold.....waiting for the spring thaw......

    You only traveled through Vermont.... Some of us actually live here.

    An engine-block heater makes for easy starts and warm air from the heater vents quickly. I place the obligatory cardboard-over-the-radiator to keep from overcooling the engine in below-0f weather. My 2000 Dak built spefically for me in Oct of 1999 makes plenty of heat.

    Now, if I could just keep that #$@& AC compressor from kicking in when the windsheild defroster is selected....

    Has anyone here put on protective door mouldings on their QC. I'm talking about the black strips that come on the SLT package about 2/3 down along the doors. I have a QC sport and already suffered my first ding. I would like the same strips but thought I heard they were terribly expensive. If anyone has applied these could you please give me info on where to purchase. I tried to call a couple companies in the past and ended up in dead ends. Also how much should I expect to pay? Please keep any responses on where and how to purchase from actual experience. I think last time it was a "I heard you could" and that led to my problems.

    I got a set of Trim-Gard door moldings for my 2002 QC Sport. They are a little over 1" wide and have tapered ends. The part number is 1402BT-QC. The Trim-Gard website has a picture of them - www.trim-gard.com. You can get them from www.auto-extra.com. They are not listed on their website, but if you call and ask, they can get them. The price was in the $60 range, including shipping - much cheaper than the $200 or so the dealer wants.

    Hi, fellas. I have read several messages about warped rotors and hoped the brake gods would pass me over but have not. My question is, what is the warranty on rotors? I have a 2001 QC with 25K miles.

    Also, should I buy raybestos and have them put on at a shop or will they(or a dealer) have them and I just need to tell them what kind to put on?

    (slogdog) The brakes are waranteed 12 months from date of purchase. Assume that you will be paying for your own repairs.


    I suggest you get in on one of the "group buys" for powerslot rotors for your Dakota. I beleive there is one going on right now at Dakota group buys


    When it comes to pads, there are basically 2 choices. (Ceramic or carbon-metallic) The carbon-based pads are VERY effective and the brake material of choice for all serious braking.

    The Ceramic-based pads are relitivly new and are not as effective in braking but produce virtually NONE of that black dust on the front wheels. You could also go with carbon-kevlar if you so desire.

    I am approaching the 6000 mile mark. Have the 16 inch wheels with the 255/65R16 Goodyears from the factory. I am following the schedule B maintenance due to lots of short trip driving throughout the day. No heavy towing (yet). Should I have the tires rotated per schedule B @ 6000 miles as well? Or will I be OK with schedule A rotation @ 7500? I'm changing the oil myself so if I can I would prefer to save some trips (and $) to the shop.

    Regarding the Dakota being discontinued.....I actually think it is kind of neat that I'll be driving the last of it's breed. Such a tough looking truck! Makes me want to hold on to it a long time even more now. Just hope the truck cooperates. Will this have any affect on parts availability?

    I understand why DC would do it. I hope the new "baby Ram" will come in a 4-door. With my kids, it's the only way I can keep a truck in the garage.

    Unless they continue the old body style past its demise date, the 2003 models will be the last of the Dakotas. They killed the 2004 Dakota because it got too close to the size of the 1/2 ton. Since the Durango and Dakota share everything,the Dakota got enlarged because they wanted to up the size of the 2004 Durango. Personally, I would like them dump the current half-ton and make the new Dakota the 1/2 ton. Do like Ford and have the new full-size the 3/4 and up trucks. As much as I like my Dak, I cannot stand the looks of the new full size Dodge.

    If you read some of the other articles on the referenced site it seems DC is getting totally out of the mid size pickup market. The new replacement will be the plastic compact truck currently shown as the M80. They are targeting the youth market with an entry level compact truck in the $15K range. I was going to get a new Quad Cab Dakota when they put the 5.7 Hemi into it but that dream is gone so we just ordered a new Neon R/T (Build date is April 17) so I have a new toy to look forward to. Besides with the current unrest in the Middle East I think it might be best to have a commuter car that gets decent gas mileage (28/34 for the R/T) when gas gets over $2 a gallon or more. Rick

    About three weeks ago I read an article in one of the major automotive business magazines or newspapers (I can't remember which one) that the German contingent of DC stepped in and said that Dodge's plan for the Dakota replacement was too big and too expensive to develop. This was apparently a new design from the ground up. However, they told Dodge to go back and come up with a lower cost alternative. Dodge came back with a design that used the existing Dakota "body mounting points". Sounds like a new body over the old frame. This seems to conflict with the latest round of rumors, but does offer a ray of hope. I find it hard to believe that DC would abandon the mid-size truck segment considering that the next generation of Chevy S-10 is supposed to be about the same size as the current Dakota.

    It seems several of us are claiming as fact the information found at that website. If you read the disclaimer it says the information is based on rumors and unsubstantiated information.
    I'll take it as fact when DC issues a press release.

    Sunburn, thanks for the info on the door moldings, but according to auto-extra's website their price is now $100.00 + shipping/handling. Also its very confusing to order and I don't like/trust any site I can't contact by phone. Guess I'll wait and see if I can obtain somewhere else.

    gtownguy - Wow. I can't believe the price went up to $100. I just purchased mine back in November and the price was $58 + shipping. You might try some autobody supply shops in your area to see if they carry Trim-Gard products. Good luck.

    I'm still here. Check the site every day. Here's a little tidbit to counter more of the Dak bashing of late. My father just leased a Ranger XLT Ext. Cab. I took it out for a "comparo" down A-1-A. Now granted the smaller 6 cyl. engine is no comparison to my 4.7 (although it drove like a 4 cyl. to me). But just overall feel, I felt like a was riding in a tin can. My Dakota delivers a far superior ride quality. "Solid" is the only way I can describe it in comparison to the Ranger. And although I have not driven one, those Nissans all dressed up in thier plastic body parts are just looking uglier and uglier as time goes by. That design is not holding up well over time. They remind me of those guys that go to the gym who only work out their upper bodies and walk around with their chests out and lats flared but their legs look like toothpicks. I call em Foghorn Leghorns. I hear that even with the supercharger, power is fair to middling and they suck gas. I give credit to Nissans Marketing Department. Still find it hard to believe people pay sticker and above for it's SUV counterpart the X-Terra. Another marketing coupe. Glad I passed. The only question for me is still did I make the right decision over the Tacoma Quad. Again, looks, ride, comfort, power, room, available manual trans., all Dakota hands down. Will it stand up over time? The $22,000.00 question.

    I'm here every day. Site activity has been a bit slow lately. I notice that is especially slow on weekends. Maybe spring fever? My '02 QC is about to turn 6K miles. A few drivetrain (4.7/auto) quirks, but not any significant problems. Been thinking about a Flowmaster 70 Series. But, got to get some work (timing belt, etc) done to my wife's 94 Subie first.

    Still going strong after 47,300 miles. I remember the good ole days when I use to check this board twice a day (back in late '99 early 2000). There were 20-30 postings a day. We have since educated the world, and lass the questions have slowed in pace.
    Wow two and half years with this board. That's longer than most relationships isn't it?

    Got about 6K on my 02 QC (4.7L, manual) and have not had any significant problems. We'll see about rotors and all the rest of the "classic" issues, though. I have noticed what feels like less power as the weather gets really warm (It's 85 degrees F in Michigan today!!!) Seems like it takes more revving when I let the clutch out to get going (specially in 2nd). Lately, since the windows have been fully open, I am also hearing a slight whistle type noise when the engine is idling. I think it my be the fuel pump or the injectors, but I was wondering if anybody else hears it?
    Anyway, nothing really to complain about (except the fact that I don't have the time to wash it properly every week).

    I just came back from a lunch run. It's 84 right now in West Michigan. I refused to use the A/C (it snowed here just 10 days ago) and drove with the windows down. I don't hear the whistle noise with my QC. I also have the 5 spd and don't notice a lack of power.
    You might want to check your shoes. Since it is summer (August) weather right now. You might be wearing thin sole shoes and not the thick soled hiking boots. So you have to push farther on the pedal to make it go. Don't laugh... I can feel the difference.

    paid for the "auto wash" option for my QC. The manual wash hasent worked in a few weeks now! Hmm sounds like my cooler needs an OPS-CHECK as i look into the wash circuit.. Probably a tire rotation and lube as well?? plugs go in soon as time permits. Does the QC even have any lube points? havent really looked yet..

    I have a 2001 4wd Dakota with 4.7 & 5 spd. I notice a slight hump in the floor below the clutch pedal area. Has anyone else noticed this in their truck? Thanks

    I can not believe that they would kill a platform which has been mentioned for a hybrid. I have been reading about the hybrid vehicles and one that is mentioned is a Durango. With gas rear wheels and electric front ones.

    My truck whines as well. I heard somewhere it's the power steering pump or something. Never got any worse, so I figured it was normal. No problems here.

    Here's a question that hasn't been asked yet. In the owner's manual, it states that you should not "skip gears" with the 5 speed tranny. It doesn't say why. I occasionally skip 4th on the 3 to 5 upshift if I'm on level or down hill. I skip the same way on most downshifts.

    Any reason why no skipping? I can understand if you're under load, but when you're not, is it going to hurt the tranny?

    I used to skip all the time with my Bronco II. Now it lacks power so I use 4th.

    I skip gears in my QC all the time (2-3-5 is my usual pattern). I have over 47K miles with no problems. I had a Ford E-150 that I skipped gears in for 6 years and sold it with 135K miles with no problems. I skipped gears in my '91 Mustang V-8 5spd for 5 years and never had a problem with it. I have been driving manual shift cars and trucks for over 17 years and have never had 1 mechanical issue related to the tranny. I have owned automatic transmissions in only 2 cars and both of them had to be rebuilt (one at 32K and the other at 80K miles). I am still waiting for someone to tell me why I shouldn't skip gears. and back it up with evidence.

    enfurio, I too noticed that whistling noise soon after purchasing my 02 Quad 4.7 manual. Stopped in at a local 5 star dealer. After dealing with a -itch of a female intake person who acted like I was on drugs and having audio-hallucinations, she finally hollered at one of the mechanics to just come over and listen. He immediately responded that it was the fuel pump doing its job and nothing to worry about. I inquired about this here and got one response confirming the fuel pump and not to worry. Just under 7000 miles and nothing to complain about yet.

    Ordered a bright silver QC 2WD sport 26C package antispin, HD, Tow. 4.7 Auto. Now I can think about upgrading to a larger trailer. I pulled a 1972 Trillium Travel Trailer (1200 lbs dry) with my Dodge Grand Caravan. I got lucky with that van. It's got 182,000kms. no tanny probs... but I do change tranny oil and filters every 40k. Had two friends with same vans say that they changed it during warranty period but not after that.... what were they thinking?

    I'll keep checking in and provide my input. Edmunds boards are great in getting actual user input. It helped me to decide which vehicle would be best for me.

    Chris, welcome to the Dodge Owners group and good luck with your new mount (when it arrives). The Bright Silver is a very handsome color. Which rear
    end ratio did you order? Although I tow only on a rare occasion (5'X 8' HD utility trailer) it is difficult to realize that something is in tow until you look in the rear view mirrors. I will be flat towing a Jeep Wrangler in the near future,
    and already have the tow brackets installed on the
    Wrangler. That will be a test for me, as I have never "flat" towed another vehicle (forget about the rope or chain thing done as a teenager). I am certain that you will truly enjoy your Quad. This is a great forum in which to gain information. The members are great people and extremely helpful, providing both experience as well as superior technical knowledge.

    FWIW, back in my early days of club racing, I used to flat-tow my miata behind a 4-cyl Toyota 4x4. Even with its mighty 6 horsepower I could manage, so towing a Wrangler with the QC shouldn't be any problem.

    What are you planning to do for brakes? I had this interesting widget in the tow bar which applied the Miata's brakes as the truck slowed down, worked really well.

    Robert, I will check for the "bump," as I have not noticed it if it actually is there. If not present, there will be no response.

    Toby, I have no other braking system other than the Quad's, and of course prayer. According to the manuals provided by Jeep and Hidden Hitch, the rigidity of the tow bar eliminates the need for braking other than provided by the prime mover. I will know much more when I hook up the Wrangler and attempt to stop (this is where the prayer comes in).

    Yikes -- i'd take such suggestions with a very large grain of salt. You're going to overwhelm your QC brakes very quickly the first time you have to slow yourself down a hill with a 3500-lb Wrangler pushing.

    The widget I used (i've gone back and looked it up) is called the Auto Stop, by Blue Ox. p/n BX8894. I was very pleased with its performance. It's pretty simple -- as the coupler retracts into its housing, a cable is spooled up inside the mechanism. The cable runs through a stiff housing which is threaded into the towed vehicle. You drill a small hole in the floorboard behind the brake pedal and pass the housing through, then the thin cable comes out and is looped onto the brake pedal arm. When the cable is retracted onto the spool, the brake pedal is depressed, slowing the vehicle. Works really well.

    The best part is that when you're not towing the vehicle, the cable and its housing remain in place -- you just disconnect the coupler's cable union and tuck it out of sight.

    Toby, thank you for the input. I will look up Blue Ox on the net and consider changing over. Actually, this is a one time tow, and I have towed some heavy trailers sans an independent braking system. Maybe not the smartest idea, but I have done so.

    The read end is a 3.55. I should have not said "I ordered one"... actually I found one through a dealer that was just the set up I was looking for.

    I found other setups with all the same options but with a 3.92 rear. I choose the 3.55 as I have only one son and a dog +wifey. So the trailer I'm interest in would be the sub 22Ft variety. This set up provides for 4,900 lbs on this truck and I felt it a good compromise between towing a moderate sized trailer and fuel mileage when not towing.

    So, I'm actually on day 2 and I love that rumbling sound :-)

    I agree. The input to this site is now much slower (which is OK) than it was before I ordered my '01 Silver Sport QC, 4.7 auto, 4x4, LSD, heavy duty w/ tow capability in February 2001. I did use the information provided here to make a buying decision and now it is time that I report on this vehicle with which I am quite happy.

    By April 17 '02 the QC was in my possession for 13 1/2 months. Unlike many other owners reporting on this forum, my usage is very low having rolled up only 6167 miles during this period. Many of my trips were very short and consequently I have chosen to use the short interval maintenace schedule. Although I am not especially heavy on the accelerator, the QC has averaged just 14.86 MPG. Hopefully there will be some improvement as more break-in miles are rolled up.

    The only problem experienced thus far was a CD player that did not work properly when the truck was delivered. The dealer immediately changed it under warranty.

    My hunting camp has some terrible off-road roads that are quite steep. I find that using the engine for a brake while descending is not handled nearly as well by the Dak with auto when compared to the 5-speed Montero which was my previous vehicle. The lowest drive range with 4 wheel drive low is much too slow, and the next highter drive range requires continuous heavy braking. Perhaps this is only a matter of manual versus auto transmission. Any comments on this subject would be appreciated.

    As a Lurker on this site, I do not read every day, but catch up every few days as time permits. I claim no particular mechanical knowledge relating to trucks, their power plants or systems. Therefore I will continue to limit my input and read to learn from those who do have a better knowledge of these subjects. And I thank you all again for a continuing flow of information.

    Ken, the control of the braking power of an engine is much further enhanced when you have a manual transmission versus an automatic. The torque converter does not provide by its nature, the same resistance as a mechanical clutch. You are located in an area that has quite a few hills even when driving on the highway. There will be some mileage improvement as you break in your vehicle. One of the reasons that the site activity has slowed, is that initially, there were so many questions and not as many answers. As the members became more educated, and the questions were culled out to the more technical side as opposed to how long it takes to deliver the car to the dealer once it is loaded on a rail car. Still, the people on this site are the very best, from the extreme technical folks to just getting a "kind and sensible" response. Happy to hear that you are enjoying your Dodge truck.

    I too am still around, 2 years and counting. Always like to check in every few days and see whats going on. This site has a great bunch of guys. I have learned a lot and at times hope I have helped someone out as well. Well, I had a 00 red QC 4x4 4.7 auto and was mostly pleased with it. One of the things I thought the 2000 had was somewhat poorly padded seats in the seat. I didn't have a lot of problems with it, but had some. Anyway, I was lurking around my dealers lot one day, and you all know what that can lead to, I spotted a 2002 2 tone light almond pearl over silver QC on the lot. I took it for a drive and loved it. Seats are padded in the seat more than the 00, and has power driver. Has everything my 00 had plus power seat, AWD, heated back glass and mirrors,tow pkg, pretty loaded. Well with 2500.00 in rebates,a free 7 yr 100,000 mile warr, I went for it. This truck listed for 1985.00 more than my 00, and I traded for 4800.00. I felt that it was a pretty good deal. I couldn't have leased one for 200.00 a month. Anyway, I like the new interior better, bud the old guages better. 16 inch wheels make for a better ride. Very smooth and quiet. Had 23000 on the 00 and I hope this one does at least as well as the 00 did. Sorry for the long post, havn't had much to say for the last few months. Take care all, Stnick.

    Well Boo, in fact I have been watching the local tracks here. We have 75 trains a day go by here. But so far only coal going east and empties heading west. But I will watch for Rick's neon tonight because as we all know, it should be easy to spot as it should glow in the dark, right?
