i recently had the 4 wheel drive on for snowy conditions and when i tried to put it back in 2 wheel drive the front wheel made a slight grinding noise, like it isn't fully disengaged. i know to reverse it after switching to 2 wheel drive and all of that - i tried it several times. is it possible to do it manually? can anyone please help with this?

Hi, The only way I know of to disengage manually would be to remove the circlip on the shaft end and remove the spline gear for the front outer axle. You would have to remove the hub bolts to get to it.
I haveauto hubs myself, and I have heard that cleaning them and then lightly regreasing them works well to keep them working right. (I have done this)
Have you tried backing up for a distance WHILE in 4WD , disengaging 4WD and then driving normally? The hubs do engage in reverse, and disengage when rolled forward, basically the reverse of forward operation.
Let us know what you learn.
