I am going to buy a 2002 Toyota Tacoma 4x4 Off Road with an automatic transmission . It has shift on the fly 4 wheel drive , when driving in 4 wheel drive -- if I push the 4 wheel drive button to shift out of 4 wheel drive there is a hard thump just below the shifter as it disengages . This happens even if I lift my foot off the gas and let the RPMs drop down . I was told by my son who has a Toyota 4x4 that this is normal .
Just need to hear it from someone else
THANKS

I also have a 2002 Tacoma 4X4 TRD. Yes, the thumping you are hearing and feeling is normal. I have over 200,000 miles on my Tacoma and have had no problem at all with any of the components. It is a good idea to let up on the gas before you press the disengage button.
