Over-serviced Engine Oil

lorry2lorry2 Member Posts: 1
I recently had an oil change completed on my Honda
Odyssey. The manufacture booklet indicated the
vehicle should be serviced with 4.6 quarts of
5w-30w oil. However, my Odyssey was serviced with
5 quarts of 10w-30 weight oil. I was assured that
the additional oil would not affect my automobile
in any way. This concerns me because I was under
the impression that if you over-serviced the engine
oil it could result in higher pressures which will
eventually affect the engine seals. Does anyone
have any comments and should I be concerned?

    Welcome to Town Hall!

Have you found our Vans Conference yet? There is a very active group of Odyssey owners and owner wannabes over there. And there is a topic devoted to Odyssey Problems. You might want to look in on it to see if any other owners have discussed your question.

Also, there is a very helpful topic there which contains links to the many other Odyssey topics in the Vans conference that you might also like to check out, here is a link to that topic as well: Honda Odyssey Links.

Just click on either of those highlighted links to find those topics.

    Good luck, and again, welcome!

    and repost your question there.

BTW, look closely at your owners manual and see if they don't allow 10W30 for hot summer conditions. Just make sure you get the 5W30 back in before winter.

IMHO, 5 quarts in a nominal 4.6 quart capacity engine is not excessive.

OTOH, they may have CHARGED you for 5 quarts since you can't buy 4.6 quarts of oil. Check the dipstick for the engine oil, that will tell you if they overfilled it and by how much.
