Yesterday, the engine warning light went on my 2000 Taurus. I checked oil level and coolant level. They are OK. There are no leaks or smoke. Car has 180,000 miles. I spent $1,000.00 on this car in last 3 months on suspension and tires. Car is only worth $1,000.00, so I don't want to spend any more money. Do you have any ideas why light is on? I am guessing a loose wire or short circuit or failed sensor. Any and all help is appreciated. Thanks.

Autozone will pull the code for you at no charge and give you the most likely ways to fix it. The only way to know what is wrong is to pull the codes. You don't want to just start throwing parts at it.

It could be something very easy and simple or it could be more serious and expensive. Only way to know for sure is have them scan it for you.

    Thanks.
Forgive my ignorance, but what is best way to get a hold of autozone?
Can I get this from their website, or do I have to go to an actual Autozone store?

You will need to go to a store. They will plug a scanner into your car's computer (under the dash) and it will show why the light is on. They will give you a print-out of the results and possible causes. You might want to call first and confirm that they do that in your area. I think the service is available at all Autozone stores, though. There is no charge and you are under no obligation to buy anything.

I have 2000 Taurus, check engine light came on at about 58000k. After a lot of worry changed gas filter had checker auto parts reset codes. Light never came on again. Filter was partially plugged.
