97 Ford Contour Engine Noise

I just purchased a 97 Ford Contour SE and after driving it for a while I noticed a loud humming noise from the engine compartment. After investigating, I found that the noise is loudest at the filter box which leads to the intake manifold. The noise doesn't always happen, it is speratic. Can anyone tell me how to solve this problem.

    Check the timing belt,ive seen many contour's with this noise from the belt slapping the inside of the cover due to being loose.(should be changed evry 60k)

    which has a timing chain.

    Check to see if the air filter box etc. is on tight.
