Just came back from the dealership...with our Slate Green EX-L. The deal was completely over the phone! Went in at 4pm completed the docs and walked out with the van at 6pm. No surprises and actually had the EX-L in stock.
They were the lowest - 1500 over inv for EX-L but matched the 1002 over inv that I had received today from another dealer.I had shopped around to get a deal based on their low quote. I asked for the wheel locks (which I have to get installed tomm) got that too in the deal.
They offered extened warranty and lojack but were optional. so declined.
I would say the entire process was painless!
So Bay area ppl I would recommend purchasing from Jim Doten Honda - Berkeley.
I am about to take delivery of a 2005 Touring with NAV/RES. The salesman who sold me the van has said her owner does not discount anything from the Honda Care packages as he also runs an extended warranty company. He wants his salespeople to push his own policies.
My salesman was nice enough to tell me to try Curry Honda or some other places, stating she cannot in good conscience offer $1850 as a "good" price for the 100,000 miles/7 year/0 deductible Honda care deal.
Other than Curry, which dealerships should I contact for the extended warranty?
I was just looking at the college hills honda website and they offer a warranty for $1150.00--but I have no idea if it's a good deal, it's just less than your $1850.
Good for Pohanka but there is still competition out there even at that excellent price (e.g. "Sam Swope Honda World" of Louisville, KY for that same [$1069.00] price also offers the 7 year/100k/0 deductible HondaCare extended warranty). In short, and happily, it looks like (with the exception of FLA and perhaps in other legislatively-challenged states) the day of stiffing the informed 05 Ody consumer through inflated warranty pricing is DEAD.
RE: posts no. 8519 (“I just felt that "check list" was a bit over the top”), 8510 (“All of these things are carefully checked in the Pre-Delivery Inspection Someone sure had a lot of time on their hands!”) and 8516 (“ I just think that pondrous list was a bit...well ...more than a bit of overkill”).
For someone so critical and speculative about certain posts (and the time spent in preparation thereof), you surely devote a considerable part of your life to this board and posting messages herein.
How are sales, sir? Perhaps there’s a car on the lot that you could help detail today instead of poring over Edmunds’ boards. Or perchance you might contribute to the perfect and “careful” pre-delivery inspections which are purportedly a feature of the buying experience at your dealership.
As for me and SEVERAL other posters here, we were apparently deprived of the perfect pre-delivery inspections which you proclaim to be so widespread. Absent such perfection, I see nothing wrong with a (sample) consumer checklist such as that posted at 8497. It’s not exactly a pack of gum we’re buying. I don’t think preparedness of a 2005 vehicle (esp. given all the electronics, etc. involved nowadays) should be so presumed.
Wait. Let’s try this: Don’t sharpshoot. Particularly where a CONSUMER is trying to help another CONSUMER.
Why not see if the dealer would rent you a vehicle overnight or for a weekend? That way you could test it first hand and not make the same mistake as with the previous car.
Thanks for asking...Sales have been great! I'm glad I'm off today since it was a non stop weekend.
I have no problem with anyone who wants to take the time to prepare a tedious checklist. You are correct, it's not a "pack of gum". It's an expensive vehicle and you are entitled to as detailed of an inspection as you feel is necessary. If I happen to think it's "over the top" or being overally obsessive I think I have the right to say that as well.
Having said this...I do think the store I work at is far above average in most respects and Pre Delivery Inspection are one of these things. Other stores may not be as careful and this,no doubt is what instills a lack of confidence with buyers and long check lists.
I just got back from NJ DMV to complete my purchase from Bedard Bros in Mass, about 4 hours from my home near Princeton. The transaction was absolutely smooth and hassle free. I rented a car one-way and they picked my up in Pittsfield, MA. No pressure to buy anything, took an hour to show me all the features. I got Touring w/DVD & Navi for $950 above invoice. I'm not sure if they are still doing this deal, but it is definitely worth giving them a call. I did not pay sales tax in MA, took plates off my car and drove back with them on the van. Not legal, but better than sending a $35k check without inspecting first. Just paid tax to NJ, when I registered, actually, Bedard filled out all the forms in advance, I just had to sign and go to DMV. Again, give them a call, it was worth the trip for me.
I'm in houston and looking for an EX-L with RES and NAV. I am building a spreadsheet with the data I've found so far...the results so far have David McDavid as best in price, but way too close the MSRP as yet (30,449 vs. 33,500). I'm looking around for much better. I saw on an earlier post that someone got a good deal in Lake Jackson, but last I checked they had 0 inventory (in November). Let me know how your search is going...
I noticed most of the information here are for US, but I am in Ontario, and interested in 2005 EX Leather, anyone from Canada can let me know your experience to buy the odyssey?
I am interested in buying a 2005 ex-l in south ontario also, could you let me know more details about your experience, and which dealer you bought from?
Anybody know what lease rate (money factor) they got on a 36 month lease? I got quoted about $1000 over invoce on a touring demo (has 3 k miles) but mf is .00275 = 6.6%. My thought is I should pay more like 500 over invoice and a rate around 5.6%.
I am buying, TODAY, a 2005 Odyssey EX w/cloth in Dallas Area for $27,000 with wheel lock, mud guard, cargo tray. NOTE this is the price including everthing except TAX. Please advise asap before I make a mistake (paying too much).
Thanks! I think the price should cool-off due to competition from Sienna and Town&Country. I read the Consumer Reports March 2005 which rates new Honda Odyssey above the Toyota Sienna. I just found out one of my friends bought an Odyssey EX with DVD at Autowest (October 2004) for $32K + destination + fees! The DVD is after-market and doesn't match the interior. What a rip-off!!
yea...i didn't like autowest. yuba city gave me the low price right in the beginning. with autowest, their initial price quote was very high. i then told them about the low quote and they said they would match it if i emailed them the whole email. i finally did and they came back and said that they didn't have the car i was looking for. i rather not play these games with dealers.
Try sending email requests to local dealerships. I recently got quotes ranging from $39,000 (about sticker) to about $36,500 for the following options and charges with varying delivery dates and color availability:
Touring with NAV/RES
destination
cargo tray
cargo net
cross bars
wheel locks &
3rd row sunshade
Try the usual suspects (Jacobs' Twin, Muller, Ed Napleton, O'Hare, etc.).
The prices are definitely coming down -- albeit slowly and with a lot of resistance from the dealerships which cannot accept the reality that the prices are coming down even if Honda has intentionally created a shortage of Touring with NAV/RES.
Last December, I backed out of a deal at a suburban dealership after waiting for nearly 3 months because the salesman refused to acknowledge the changed market condition (which I was actually willing to accept to get it over with) and then tried to pad his already fat profit margin (close to MSRP) by tacking on huge garbage fees (rust proofing/"fabric" care for the leather seats for $900, racing stripes/sports package for $500 and extended warranty for $1900) at the last possible moment when my wife showed up to sign the papers and pick up the van.
Initially, he tried to tell my wife (who had to bring our young kids to the dealership since she had no child care that day while I was out of town on business) that I had asked and agreed to get these options.
He had not counted on my wife being a very tough negotiator, having spent much of her professional career negotiating huge deals. Undetered, he then tried to "honey" her into signing these papers. She gave him one last chance to reconsider and right the sitation. After a quick cell phone conversation with me and when he did not capitulate and kept trying to convince her what a great bargain "your husband" had cut for you and your kids, she just got up and walked away from the deal.
The guy tried to get the deal back, claiming that this had been a huge mistake on his part, this time telling her he thought she was someone else's wife who was supposed to come in to pick up a van! She told him people like him should learn there are consequences to conducting business that way. She walked.
In the process we are saving nearly $2,000 while sending a message that we don't want to do business with people like that. We did have to wait another 2 months or so. But, the wait is well worth it in my opinion.
I don't know about the Dallas area specifically but almost $1500 over invoice on a cloth EX seems quite high compare with recent posts from around the country.
I am looking for a great deal in the phoenix metroplex on a EX trim, could move one up.
When to Honda of Mesa and the list the EX at 28510 MSRP. I have not started my haggling but looking to create some leverage with other honda dealerships in the area. I am not afraid to travel a little to get a great deal (ie, up to 1.5% above dealer invoice, which if you figure in the dealer holdback of 3.3% translates into a nice 4.8% profit for the dealer).
any experiences in the area would be greatly appreciated.

Standing ovation for your wife! I'm a guy, but I think it is outstanding when women do this kind of thing with car salespeople. My wife was "honeyed" several times in our search and it made her furious.
Check 8537 for my experience in buying an EXL-RES for $4xx over invoice... The accessories you mention are only worth $300 MSRP. You can always demand that they remove them.
Even then $1200 (1500 - 300) over invoice for an EX seems a bit high. Shop around, don't fall for the usual game of "supply isn't meeting up with demand".
I THOUGHT THAT TYPE OF "SELLING" WAS VERY RARE ANYMORE.GUESS NOT.I'D LIKE TO STEER CLEAR OF THAT DEALER BUT YOU DIDN'T MENTION IT BY NAME?ALSO, HAVE YOU NOW PURCHASED OR IN THE PROCESS?INTERESTING THAT MENTION THE $2000 SAVINGS SINCE THE CARS DIRECT SITE WAS (UNTIL TODAY I THINK)SHOWING A DISCOUNT OF $2200 +/- ON A TOURING W/DVD:NAVI IF YOU STARTED OUT W/ TOURING ONLY AND THEN CHECKED THE OPTION TAB FOR DVD,NOW THE OPTION TAB IS GONE ON THAT SCREEN AND THE PRICE IS BACK TO LIST $38,810 FOR DVD:NAVI BUT THE TOURING ONLY IS DISCOUNTED $1867.
If you could turn off your CAPS LOCK, that would help us read your messages. Thanks!

Drive out price: 29500 (which includes destination and $89 doc fee).
Since I'm in Texas, I have to pay taxes in Texas when I register (sometime this week).
No big deal buying out of state. Nobody pulled me over :-). It was easy.
You might want to check out Mike Pruitt Honda in Akron. I got a price of $600 over dealer invoice on a Touring Odyssey with DVD and a price of $300 over dealer invoice cost on a regular Odyssey EXL-DVD. Make sure to ask for an internet salesperson and you can skip right to the best price!

HOORAY! I too am a guy but it insults me as well as my wife to see women treated this way. Wake up salespeople, its the 21st century. We walked away from Subhuman Ford in Northern California - one reason was the way they treated my wife. When she got behind the wheel to test drive the vehicle, he cautioned her about how to make a left turn ahead. (You had to be there to get the tone.) I am glad she refused to allow the deal back on the table. There are consequences. No wonder people have the opinion of salespeople that they have. No offense to isell and others. There are many fine salespeople out there. I have had a sales position for a while (not cars). What is needed is professional people who can treat people with respect and not like village idiots with no brains. (I know there are a lot out there in that category). Guess the smart shoppers will have to patiently seekout the professional salespeople and let the idiot buyers have the jerk salespeople.
so far I have gotten one of the local dealerships down to $26,450 for the EX trim model (MSRP $28,510) which translates into a 4% over invoice price ($25,527). If you factor in the dealer holdback thats 7.3% over wholesale, nice profit. Still at with a MSRP of $28,510 the $26.4K price represents a 9.3% price drop.
Still working, but it looks like slim pickings in the pheonix metroplex area.
Speaking of price increases on Honda. New Ford Freestyle now has $4000 discount at Crossroads Ford Raleigh NC. Wow, it just came out and the price is cut that much and honda raises price of Ody $200. Oh well, quality shows through every time.
Mike Pruitt's quotes to you seem a bit high for the Akron area right now. College Hills Honda (in Wooster, about half an hour southwest) is offering all in-stock Odysseys at 1 cent over invoice this month. Their website shows their inventory.
Park Honda in Akron offered me a Touring R&N at invoice earlier this month. Their website shows they still have that particular unit in stock as well as a second one in the same color (silver).
We just returned from the dealer and put a deposit down on a 2005 EX-L. Paid $28,099 with no dealer add-ons. An additional $140 for winter floormats for snowy Boston. Got it through the internet sales guy at Ron Bouchard's in Fitchburg, MA. Overall good experience. Pick up the car on Thursday.

What a winner!!! Never forget "it's a war out there". You may have lost the battle, but in the end you'll get the car you want and "win the war".
If more people were like your wife, and purchased using their head rather than their heart, maybe salesman (of all types) would get the message.
Honda is offering financing, depending on credit, between 3.29-3.79 over the President's Day weekend, according to my dealer in MA. I assume, because this is through Honda, that this is nationwide. This is a good time to buy!
I live in New Jersey and am looking for a 2005 Odyssey EX-L. I think your price of $27k is outstanding. Did any other dealers come close to that. From my research I think 27500 is the invoice for my area, how did you get it down to $27? Were the only additional charges MV and tax?
I just test drove a Honda Odyssey EX-L yesterday and thought for sure I was going to purchase the Honda Pilot but the Odyssey had the Pilot beat in luxury, space and ride. I am planning on purchasing one before the end of the month. I've seen on a few postings that the EX-L can be gotten around $27,000. What dealers in New Jersey are offering it at this price and what additional charges need to be accounted for in the overall price?
I just concluded a deal to buy my new 2005 Touring R&N (DVD/NAV) in the Northern Virginia area. I emailed 40 dealerships within 60 miles of Fairfax, VA (included VA/MD/DC) and have been “dealing” for a week now. I finally ended up with what I consider close to the best deal around in this area. We will have to wait 4-5 weeks for delivery since my husband and I area set on the Sage Brush Pearl with Ivory interior and there are none around in-stock. Plus, we were willing to wait a month or two in order to get the best price. Here is what we ended up paying:
$36,908 (incl. destination, wheel locks, mud flaps, and cargo tray - $2,102 off MSRP)
$296 (dealer processing)
TOTAL = $37,204 + TTL
We are also going to purchase the Honda Care extended warranty (7/100/0) for $1069 + tax, which is what this site said that I could do it over the phone with at Sam Swope. Dealer agreed to match this.
All in all, I got a LOT fewer responses from dealers willing to negotiate than I thought. The majority of responses were MSRP or above, even when I emailed them back with other good offers I had. A lot of them were also quite condescending – “Other dealers are lying to you if they are telling you they can go lower than MSRP just to get you into their showroom. Come to me if you want honesty.” Blah, blah Is it because I am a woman? Anyway, a lot of others were only around $500 off MSRP. There were really only 2 good offers, one in MD and the other in VA, willing to match the MD offer and throw in the accessories (plus I don’t have to spend my time to get it safety inspected and titled since it’s in the same state). Both internet sales people were wonderful: both very responsive, thorough, and addressed all my questions.
The two dealers that offered the best deals and were wonderful to work with are:
O’Donnell Honda in Ellicott City, MD
And Pohanka Honda of Fredricksburg, VA
Thanks to all who posted information and helped me through this process! I'm only posting my experience since your posts all helped me.
My husband and I live in Va too, and I did the same thing you did. I got an offer from Antrim way honda in PA for an exl dvd nav for 31,600 + Va tax +Va tags. They'll place the order this month, and we'll have to wait 6-8 weeks after that. It's just a 1.5 hr drive from here, so we thought its ok.
1. Is destination fee a legit fee or built in profit. For example, if Invoice is 25,012 and I get a deal for 500 over invoice and then pay an destination fee of 550, did I get dooped? Or is this a good deal?
2. Also, does the 25,012 invoice price include the new 200 addition by Honda as of this month? Thanks.

hope this helps...

$36,908 (incl. destination, wheel locks, mud flaps, and cargo tray - $2,102 off MSRP)
$296 (dealer processing)
TOTAL = $37,204 + TTL
Andrew
2. Also, does the 25,012 invoice price include the new 200 addition by Honda as of this month? Thanks.
