"And what do you propose the trickle-downers should do about it? "
I propose they do nothing, because I am a realist, and I know they will do nothing. Their pockets are the ones being lined. More supply side garbage.
20mpg in town is fine with me.
I'd love to see the "market forces" we are lied to so perpetually that caused even this minimal price increase. Of course, the masses, who are going to have to pay more to enable further reverse socialism doled out to the greatest entitlement segment of society, are just not privy to such information.
....I was out in the burbs last weekend, and gas literally was the same price as on the north side of Chicago. Also, jesmann, when I lived in St. Louis, it was MUCH cheaper than in Chicago (I travelled between the two regularly), but apparently not now. Last night, most stations were $2.97-3.09 for regular (most at $2.999). I don't understand why there was a price difference between Chicago, the suburbs and St. Louis when gas was a dollar, but not when it's $3.
I also live in the Chicago area (Joliet) and I don't understand why the prices in the Chicagoland area are still so high. My wife and kids live in Dayton OH and I go there every weekend. Prices there this past weekend were in the $2.60's while our's in Joliet are still in the $2.90's. Is the gouging worse in this area or what?
...on Verree and Rhawn. Regular is 5 cents less at $2.77. Ultra is now $3.05 - almost as low as the day before Katrina when it was an even $3.00. Lowest price seen is $2.76 at the no-name station.
I can understand why Chicago is so high (taxes for state, Cook County, I'm sure multiple taxes for the city), but Joliet is in Will County, should (always had until recently) have lower/fewer taxes than Chicago, with resulting lower prices, no? Just this year, I've noticed no to very little difference in gas prices between the city and anywhere within fifty miles, save for Indiana, which is still considerably cheaper. Gas is still hovering around $3 in the city, some places even slightly higher.
I have been driving around this week on other people's gas and here is what I have seen since Sunday:
Citgo (IL62-IL25) - $2.61 Crystal Lake $2.78-2.84 Kane Co along Randall $2.78-2.87
In the past month (when the gas approached $3), Chicago and the suburbs seriously flattened out. However, the wide differences have started to reappear with prices in Chicago and the gas stations on the freeways (like Joliet) still remain pretty high.
In general, I try to buy gas at one of the following sources to get the best prices (without driving a mile out of the way):
IL-251 near Rockton (ourside of Rockford)
Sam's Club - usually the last to raise prices. Costco generally matches SC a few days later - their usual "me too" strategy)
Randall Rd (Kane/McHenry) - Albertsons/Safeway/Citgo is a perpetual gas war.
Citgo at the intersection of IL-62 and IL-25
We ALWAYS fill up before heading into Cook County where the prices tend to be the highest. Wisconsin also tends to be higher.
I am not saying that 0.30 price difference justifies a 25 mile drive to get gas BUT ... I will fill up sooner on cheaper gas.
Prices dropped three cents this afternoon at the Sunoco in my neighborhood. Regular is now $2.74. Super is below $3.00 for the first time in almost 2 months at $2.95. Ultra is still above at $3.02.
I only half-filled the tank of my Frontier, which was running on empty, in the hope that prices would come down in the near future. The Camry is still running on pre-Rita gas.
Diesel getting its usual rise from winter mix and competition from home heating oil (same raw fuel as diesel), but still below the high watermark immediately after Katrina.
While nothing like Katrina or Rita, I've had 14 inches of rain here in the last 8 days, 10 from Tammy. You'll have to forgive me if I seem a bit punchy about di-hydrogen oxide...
That's great! I know you've said you've been walking to work (not an option for me). I can only go about two weeks in my Frontier before I need to gas up again. And it stays parked most weekends.
But aren't you going to have to use the gas soon so it won't go bad? Or do you put stabilizer in the tank?
Meanwhile, on the way home this evening, I saw that prices had finally dropped another 10 cents, to $2.699 for 87 at Sheetz and "Lowest Price." Citgo and Exxon nearby were still at $2.799, but not for long I suspect.
The Sunoco on Rhawn and Verree in NE Philly shows $2.67 for regular and Ultra is below $3.00 for the first time since before Katrina. Still, it took $43 for my coworker to fill the tank on her 1995 Mercury Villager minivan.
I have seen $2.46 for 87 octane in the Redford area (which is west of Detroit). That's the lowest I have seen in a long time. Boy, I hope these prices keep coming down. Can't wait to see my heating bills this winter.
...I have electric heat (a heat pump). We keep the thermostat low enough so that only on the coldest of nights does the "emergency" mode come on -- resistance heat (like a toaster). That can run up the bill.
Some years ago, a natural gas line was put down in our subdivision. We passed on tapping into it.
...I was happy to pay only $2.729 in New Lenox, IL (Jewel with a gas station on Route 30 just off I-80) for 87 octane, about 20 cents cheaper than most of Chicago.
What I can't believe is that we find these prices cheap! I remember 99 cents a gallon not too long ago.
This was odd - in Potomac, MD, next to Montgomery Mall, there is an Exxon and a Shell station that share a plot, they are literally back to back. Usually prices are the same, but yesterday the Shell was 20 cents cheaper for all grades! I guess the Exxon had not responded yet.
Even more odd was someone getting gas at the Exxon! Hello? Drive 20 feet away and save 20 cents a gallon. Sheesh. :confuse:
It's still too much but not as bad as it was about a month ago. I wish the prices fell as quickly as they rose. Funny, I remember getting Amoco Ultimate and Sunoco Ultra for around $1.47 not so long ago.
college station, boy i am jealous. relatively cheap gas, and great ice cream. in central ct, regular gas is in the 2.639 to 2.679 range. as an aside, i don't usually use shell gas because it is usually a bit more expensive than exxon/mobil. the other day i had some time before picking one of my kids up at school and needed to fill up. the closest station is a shell so i went there. i immediately noticed the engine ran smoother and i didn't have to put as much pressure on the gas pedal as i usually do to accelerate or maintain speed. i drove the explorer for the next couple of days to confirm. it is running smoother. however, i now have 49,999.x miles on it. x is definitely >5. i figure the next time i look at it, it is going to hit 50,000, so i'm letting it sit for a while.

Heh... I thought we were past this... College Station is in Texas, College Park is in Maryland... State College (you got the ice cream part right) is in PA!
We're going to Pittsburgh this weekend, so for once it might be better NOT to fill it up before leaving? ($2.499 is still the lowest here for 87 - Central Virginia).
Cedar Rapids, Iowa, here. I was checking another site that lists gas prices and it concurs with what I noted on Tuesday. Prices in town are ranging from $2.44-$2.49 depending on which station you go to. That is for 89 octane with ethanol, which is widely available in the state of Iowa. For those of you who are not familiar with ehtanol, it is a corn based ethanol product similar in nature to the product HEAT that many people in other parts of the country add to their gas tank in the winter. Ethanol helps reduce moisture in the gas tank, line, and engine and helps to keep things nice and clean. Most people in Iowa who use ethanol use it year round. It does not hurt your engine nor void any car warranties and seems to actually give your engine a slight boost. The state of Iowa gives ethanol blended gas a tax break because it is a corn product, corn is a big grain crop in Iowa as most know, so, ethanol blend is usually the most inexpensive that you can purchase. Ethanol actually adds about two points of octane rating to the gas. Thus we have 87,89,93 octane available to us. I hope the prices keep dropping and, BOY am I glad I don't own an SUV. LOL
I filled up our Mercury Mountaineer at the BP in McComb, MS yesterday at $2.64 for regular unleaded. It dropped to $2.54 today. I could have saved more than a dollar. McComb is in South Mississippi 15 miles north of the Louisiana state line on I-55 and we were greatly affected by Katrina. If prices keep sliding we may get back to what they were before the storm(s).

I don't understand the 2 cent raise we had for about 10 days, now it's back to the Katrina levels.
$3.09 down the street at the Chevron, but several pumps were out of order (they had not run out of any gas, so that was odd).
Also $3.09 at the Getty on Montrose, so I filled up there.

Once I make the after-basketball-practice run, I'll know
Maybe I should bill for these parent/chauffer deals??? LOL
Have you considered **TAXES**? Why is gas 30 cents higher in Chicago City compared with Winnebago Co., IL.
It also does not help that the refineries have to prepare SIX different gas formulations for the state of Iliinois.
I have been paying $2.61 in McHenry County (Phillips 66 and Sam's Club).
Sheetz 87 $2.799, 93 $2.999.
Exxon up the road is 10 cents higher.
Citgo almost next door to Exxon is still $2.999 for 87 (no change).
