    Have been aware of truck safety, or lack of safety for a number of years... I remember checking crash test scores a number of years back. Nissan trucks scored much better then. Which was my reason for picking the Nissan 6 cyl SE King Cab, which rated better than most of the other trucks out there. Was surprised to see the Frontier doing so poorly in this round of tests.

    More on Dakota safety. (I own a 1997) AIA crashed a regular cab, the NHTSA crashed an extended cab. I don't know if it makes a difference in a head on crash? But anyway when you look at the data:
    1) AIA (The one on TV) said it did "poorly" in offset crash. But head and chest injuries were minimal. Leg injuries were bad.
    2) NHTSA (Government head on crash test) says it does the best of any "small truck" (web page can be seen through Edmunds)
    3) NHTSA hiway death rate per vehicle puts older model Dakota 1/2 the death rate than any other small truck. Data gathered from real crash data.

    Summation? I guess I feel safe. But if I see an accident coming, I'm aiming head on! (as opposed to an offset crash...)

    Oops, sorry, I was looking at the wrong entry.
    In the TV test (The IIHS (not AIA)) The
    Dakota had POOR head injuries, GOOD chest injuries and acceptable leg and foot injuries.

    It's important to remember that the Dakota is a midsize truck, as opposed to vehicles categorized as small trucks like the Ranger, Mazda, Nissan, etc., and it's priced accordingly. The Dakota should outperform those trucks, but also should not be expected to outperform a full size truck.

    What is the injury potential for passengers in the back seat of a full size extended cab truck like the GMC Sierra? It appears to me that head damage from the rear window is likely in rear-end or head-on collisions...

    Does anybody know when a settlement may be reached in the louisana class action suite? The last update I got was that in june 98 it was going thru the appeals process. I want to use the 1000 dollar rebate ??Tom201
