I filled up today at Exxon (only $2.03) in central VA.

But what to my wondrous eyes should appear...but new octane stickers on the midgrade and premium pumps. Both have been lowered, to 88.5 for midgrade and 92 for premium! There's still a 10-cent spread among the grades.

Doesn't bother me, because my vehicles all call for 87. :P

    Lemko, enjoy your "ultra" 93!

It doesn't really matter whether you choose to use the NYMEX price or OPEC basket price what matters is the direction the prices are heading.

El Cheapo ARCO stations up 5 cents this morning. Guess they got the word that it was business as usual. We can still get gas for under $2.25 per gallon.

a local mom / pop station (Exxon) that always seems to be higher then everyone else really has overdone it this time. most of the stations are $2.13 - $2.19 for 87 grade around here, but they are $2.59 for 87 grade. To make matters worse, their 89 grade is $2.89 and 91 grade is $2.99. what makes it funny is is still see people stopping there.

Gas prices here at some stations started rising to $2.39. Another restoration. They have come quicker and quicker the last couple weeks. Each time they're keeping the price higher during the drops before the "restoration" is implemented.
The lowest the cheaper stations got to was $2.08 and $2.10.

Now they're mostly going to $2.39. I thought the barrel price of oil had dropped. Is there a hurricane somewhere? Law of supply and demand? Maybe people drive more on election day?

I expect to see $2.50 again now that Nov. 7th is past.

Where I live in So. MD the cheapest gas prices have fluctuated in a tight range between $2.04 and $2.09 for the past month. It's been $2.07 for the last week. That is consistent with oil prices remaining in a similarly tight range during this period. I guess we aren't as susceptible to political conspiracies down here.

Price in San Diego went back down 5 cents today. Some stations went up to $2.29 others came down to $2.29 so the price differences are tightening up. Still a couple stations in my area at $2.18. Long lines at those places.

Here's an interesting article Ir ead today about the current fuel prices. Has a tie-in to the elections, crude oil prices, production cuts, the usual:

Fuel prices at the pump have inched higher over the past three days, as the price of crude oil has seesawed on production cuts and forecasts for higher global demand.

The average price for a gallon of regular unleaded stood at $2.22 today, up 2 cents from Tuesday, Nov. 7, according to AAA, of Heathrow, Fla. Today's average price is just 3 cents shy of the month-ago average, and 12 cents less than the average from a year ago.

The average prices for midgrade and premium unleaded gasoline are also up 2 cents a gallon from three days ago. Midgrade sells today for an average of $2.35 a gallon and premium sells for an average of $2.44 a gallon.

Diesel fuel continues to be more expensive than gasoline. A gallon of diesel sells today for an average of $2.61 a gallon, up 1 cent from three days ago. One year ago, diesel was selling for an average of $2.85 a gallon.

The price of crude oil jumped above $61 a barrel on Thursday, Nov. 9, after U.S. elections and an International Energy Agency report forecasting higher demand for oil in the fourth quarter of this year, according to the Associated Press.

The report expected higher demand in the United States in this year's final quarter, when compared with the same period last year. A year ago, demand fell as fuel prices soared in the wake of damage from Hurricane Katrina.

But crude oil prices slid back to near $60 a barrel this morning, despite those factors and hints that the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries may consider another production cutback. OPEC member nations agreed to reduce production by a combined 1.2 million barrels a day, starting Nov. 1.

Las Vegas was the site of the highest price for regular unleaded gasoline in the nation at $3.35 a gallon, according to spotters at GasPriceWatch.com. Spotters found regular unleaded selling for $1.89 a gallon in Verona, Va., the lowest price listed on the Web site.

GasPriceWatch.com uses volunteer spotters to monitor fuel prices.

National Unleaded Average Regular Mid Premium Diesel
    Current Avg. $2.22 $2.35 $2.44 $2.61
    Yesterday Avg. $2.21 $2.35 $2.43 $2.61
    Month Ago Avg. $2.26 $2.39 $2.48 $2.62
    Year Ago Avg. $2.35 $2.50 $2.59 $2.85

I don't think it's like the stock market with support and resistance levels. :P

  • imidazol97imidazol97 Member Posts: 27,650
I believe there is a psychology involved in setting the gas prices and keeping them above $2.00 on the part of the marketers for the gas companies. If they let it go substantially and stay below $2.00 for more than a few days they will have lost the psycological advantage. They feel that people feel relieved to pay "only" $2.00 and change after their high price reaming throughout the summer.

The people 15 miles down the interstate setting prices for a gasoline subsidiary of a major oil are looking at what people will continue to tolerate. They aren't looking at past resistance levels like the stock prices.

Whether it's $2 or $3 a gallon is going to affect the people who live check-to-check, or drive a lot.

It makes no difference in my curent lifestyle, as I've moved and changed from a 30-mile commute to a 4-mile commute. The price of gas (if high) though would change my future vehicle purchase as I buy a vehicle for 5+ years ... if it turns out to be a good vehicle.

Imn western NH the lowest price I've seen is $2.17. I use 93-octane mainly which is $2.39.

11-10-06 Gas Prices in California City are $2.55 to $269 per gallon for regular unleaded. We are located by Edwards AFB. If you need gas and are coming over the hill on hwy 58 from Bakersfield I suggest you fill up in Bakersfield and save a few bucks. If you are coming from Los Angles area I suggest you fill up in Lancaster or Palmdale and save a few buck. Hundreds of people come to California City's Desert during the weekend and on holidays for off road biking, etc. They could save a lot of money on gas if they get it some place else. Also the couple of gas stations here in Calif. City depend on these out of towners to make their killing on their gouged prices. Please don't buy fuel here in Calif. City and may be just may be these idiots will lower their prices. Bakersfield is $2.29 per gallon. Lancaster is $2.39 per gallon. You could save almost $.30 a gallon if you buy it some place else that's only 30 to 60 miles from Calif. City. In the SF Bay Area they are paying $2.17 per gallon. The National Average is $1.73 per gallon. Calif. City is setting the high end for the national average. We are a small community with a lot of retired people and people living on So. Sec. etc. These businesses here in Calif. City, CA are taking advantage of the people who live here because of the location. Don't doubt that they aren't gouging us, because they are.

    Oil analysts are correct

Simms asked if the oil companies engineered that: Did they lower prices before the election to generate support for oil-friendly Republican incumbents, "and now that it's over, will we get ripped again?"

Street Beat loves a good conspiracy, but oil industry analysts say probably not.

Among the reasons they give for rising prices:

    # Before hurricane season, oil companies stockpiled fuel to try to avoid the shortages and high prices we saw post-Katrina. The hurricanes didn't come, and the ample supply drove prices down. Those stockpiles are running out now.

    # OPEC has threatened to reduce production, and prices are going up in advance of anticipated cutbacks.

    # Demand for gasoline in developing countries is soaring.
Oil is marketed globally, so conditions on the other side of the world can affect prices here.

That's likely to get worse, and soon. China, for instance, has about 13 million cars, roughly seven for every

1,000 residents (the United States has 600 per 1,000).

But demand for cars there is huge: It soared by 56 percent in 2002 and 75 percent in 2003 before the government tightened credit restrictions, slowing the growth.

Still, it's expected to run 15 percent to 20 percent per year as far out as anyone can see, and the number of cars on the planet is predicted to double, to 1.2 billion (with a "b") by 2030.

By then, when we talk about the good old days of cheap gas, we may mean back when it was $5 a gallon.

USA Average is still sitting at $2.20 and lowest USA price is $1.80
  • gagricegagrice Member Posts: 31,450
Street Beat loves a good conspiracy, but oil industry analysts say probably not.

What do they mean by "Probably Not"? Why did we go up 10 cents the day after the election? Most of the country is staying where it was before the election.
  • larsblarsb Member Posts: 8,204
gary says, "Why did we go up 10 cents overnite the day after the election?"

What I have said before I will say again:

The "averages" in the USA did not budge at all. Zero. Zilch. Nada. Look at this thread over the past three weeks, and the USA average has hovered around $2.18 - $2.21.

If there were some isolated instances of SOME stations raising their prices overnite, then it was the STATION OWNER who did that - not market forces and certainly not Big Oil.

If it was Big Oil or Market Forces at work, then the USA average would have been affected upward. Not just some random stations.

the other nite on my way home, I noticed the local Shell is up to $2.199 for 87, while Citgo is up to $2.159. The lowest they had gone was $2.079 for the Shell and $2.119 for Citgo.
  • british_roverbritish_rover Member Posts: 8,502
In the weeks before the election the prices of the lowest gas stations by my house fluctiated between 2.14 and 2.19. A couple of days before the election they hit 2.16 and stayed there till the day after the election.

The evening after they went to 2.19 and just last night they all shot up to 2.26. This is four different gas stations of three different brands.

Exxon/Mobile and shell are always a few cents higher then these other brands and they also shot up the same amount of cents. They started out at 2.22-2.24 and shot up to 2.30-2.32.
  • lemkolemko Member Posts: 15,261
...Sunoco Regular is now $2.15 and "ultra?"93 is $2.40.
  • PF_FlyerPF_Flyer Member Posts: 9,372
The Sunoco stations here seem to march to their own drummer. The price for regular there has been bouncing between $2.17 and $2.19. But the gap tothe next grade up has gotten weird. The standard gap was 10 cents to the next grade, and 20 cents more to premium. But last week, the Sunoco dropped to $2.17 for regular and the next grade up dropped went to $2.31.
Last night regular rebounded to $2.19 but the $2.31 was unchanged.

I figure there are two ways to become a gazillionaire...one is to figure a way to get teenagers toactually believe what you say, the other is to be able to make sense out of gas pricing! :P
  • odie6lodie6l Member Posts: 1,173
    It just figures.
From The PatriotNews - Harrisburg, PA
Pennsylvanians could see increases in gasoline prices, license and registration fees, and real estate transfer taxes in order to address backlogs of road and bridge repairs and public transit system deficits, according to a panel studying the state's transportation system.:snip:One way to do that, the report said, would be to raise state oil and gas taxes the equivalent of 12.5 cents a gallon. The report also suggests hiking driver's license and vehicle registration fees by an unspecified amount to raise $150 million for public transportation needs. Gov. Ed Rendell appointed the panel.

It figures as soon as he was re-elected he started messing with the Gas prices.

Yikes indeed. I'm still waiting for them to rollback the 10 cent "temporary increase for snow removal" that they tacked on back in '94 (I THINK that was the year) I wonder where THAT money has been going since that winter ended???

It's bad enough that PA is changing the PA State Emmision Testing to match CA standards. The report that was in the Patriot News said starting in January 2008 ALL new vehiles have to meet the CA standards, and it will increase all New Vehicle prices by $3000 to $5000 per vehicle.

Ohio got rid of the EPA testing in the 8 or so counties where it had been required. Instead EPA standards will be met by using reformulated gasolines?

I'm waiting for the people to complain when that happens because the price of the gas is higher. They griped about the $10 per year E-check cost.

Sheetz raised its price by 6 cents to $2.09 late last week for 87, and everyone in the immediate area copied it (one cent less for Valero), but this afternoon, it was down to $2.05.

Hard to figure out what is going on. Meanwhile, we filled up in a nearby town about 40 miles away on Sunday (at another Sheetz) for the same $2.05. (No, we didn't drive 80+ miles just to save 4 cents a gallon.) ;)
  • imidazol97imidazol97 Member Posts: 27,650
DAyton area still has one side of town with scattered stations that have dropped back down to $2.03. But in the Thanksgiving spirit for all the money given to them, the companies are raising prices to $2.29.

The weekly "restoration" has stations going back up to $2.29 but it's not solid; some are at $2.24, e.g.

    http://daytongasprices.com/retail_price_chart.aspx

The chart doesn't show the extremes of the up and down fluctuations, i.e., $2.29 to $2.03 then $2.34 in 7 days which occurs in some areas. The data is an average of all stations in the greater area with suburbs included and even some remote cities are in the average.

That must be nice. We here in Southern Calif. are still paying from $2.50 to $2.70 per gallon for 87 octane. I assume it's because of tax's and because the cost of living is so outragously expensive here. Not to mention that we are also being gouged by the station owners and oil companies. I just filled up my Tahoe on 11-17-06 . It took 22.8126 gallons which cost me $57.01. The tank holds 26 gallons. I would have saved $11.70 if the cost was $2.05. And if it was $1.71 which I beleive is the national average right now I would have saved $.79 a gallon for a total savings of $20.54 per tank. I go through an average of 8 tanks a month. That would save me $164.32 a month and $1,971.84 a year. I could do a lot with that kind of money. I've got to get out of Calif. It cost to much to live here, and it's not worth it. I've lived here for all of my life minus about 5 1/2 out of 9 years that I was in the Air Force. Unfortunately the people elected the same governor, Arnold Swartnegger, who doesn't give a hoot about the reclining middle class and poor. The rich seldom complain about the price of gas or other nessecities.

Price break! On my way in to work this morning, I saw that Sheetz (central VA) had dropped its price to $1.99 for 87.

This must have just happened, because the nearby competition is still at $2.04-$2.05, except "Lowest Price" (yes, that's their name) has matched Sheetz.
  • tpetpe Member Posts: 2,342

The national average is $2.23 a gallon.

Here's a little money saving tip. Figure out a way to burn less than 200 gallons of gas per month. The national average for gas consumption is around 50 gallons a month. So you're a little on the high side.

In Amarillo, I've been told you can still find gas closer to the $2.00 mark. The good thing is we haven't seen a sudden spike in gas price increases like some of us predicted. Nancy Pelosi, is going to cutt off the oil subsidies big oil has been getting from this last congress, which IMHO is a good thing. They are making record profits while most of us have to reach deep into our wallets just to fill our cars. :(
