Paid 2.15 for Hess 87 today. The going price seems to be $2.15 to $2.19, although I saw a 12-cent spread among the grades at East Coast (unusual for them).

I'll be traveling to NYC over the weekend, so those Jersey prices look reasonable.
  • rockyleerockylee Member Posts: 14,014
My current gas prices is $2.19 here in Dumas and $2.18 at the shell station I frequent on loop 335 in Amarillo. Now only if we could get those gas prices back down to $0.70 a gallon like I was paying in 1997' ;):)

    Well that's a good sign. I assume premium is $2.57 ????

"ultra?"93 is $2.57, "premium?91" is $2.47. Sunoco used to have a lot more grades back in the day. I remember the pumps used to have a dial on the side of the pump with at least six diffent grades. More recently they were Economy 86, Regular 87, Silver 89, Premium 93, Ultra 94.

locally i'm finally seeing a 20 cent or 22 cent delta between 87 octane & 91+ . months ago the delta had gotten much larger - up to 70 cents per gallon at some stations. (northeast USA).

Here in St. Louis regular at the Shell I buy from shot up from $2.08 to $2.29/gal on Tuesday for no apparent reason other than maybe retailer profit recovery. Other stations are up about the same too.

I can give you the answer to your question? The Shell Refinary in Northern California is closed for scheduled maintenance. I know this because my nephew works there. I mentioned this in a message a couple of weeks ago. So here we go again, paying for Shell to do maintenance and pay it's employees double and tripple time. It doesn't seem fair, right nor legal. But I'm not an attorney and I'm sure that Shell has the best attorney's that money can buy. To me it sounds like gouging. But I'll bet you 10 to 1 that our local government and the US government will not do a thing about it. I'm so sick of these high gas prices and being ripped of by the oil companies that I have to pray for them. They will all have their day when they have to answer for the things that they have done to millions of poeple. We are all hurting, some more than others. We are paying $2.66 a gallon for regular here in Southern California have been for a least 3 weeks now. One would think that the cost of fuel would be less expensive here in California since we have so many refinaries and pipe lines. But it's just the oppposite. I guess that this is some of the reason's why so many people are leaving California. I might just join the band wagon myself here shortly. I've lived in Calif. for 47 years and my family has been here in California 1849. It is a shame that good people are being run out of such a beautiful state because of the corporations. They are ruining our country and our politicasl system. It is time for a drastic change in the way our government works and how the corporations are the one's that are truely running our country.

    2.75/2.85/2.97 at my local Chevron

I see premium is up 2 cents in the differential...must be some supply and demand issue.

But, if anything, last week in commuting I took it easy, and got almost 20mpg...not bad for a 350hp automatic in 90% city driving...

    Most paid was $2.299
    Least paid was $2.139
Lowest diesel I saw was $2.419

Paid $2.14 for 87 at Hess today.

On our New Year's weekend trip to NYC, we saw prices in PA most commonly at $2.39 for 87, some higher.

In NJ, we paid $2.27 just over the PA line and $2.23 in Jersey City just outside the Holland Tunnel.

We didn't buy gas in NYC (as per usual practice), and it was $2.49 or higher there.

The price for regular unleaded dropped 2 cents to $2.29/gallon in So Maryland. When factoring for inflation that is the same as paying 56 cents a gallon in 1974, not to mention cars get better mileage than they did back then. I can't believe how cheap and affordable gas is in this country compared to other places.

Gas is $1.99 at local hot spot for lower prices across the north side of the center Dayton area. $2.05 to $1.99, and I even got $.10 more off at Kroger.

These are brand name stations, not the Swifty and Thornton that are the questionable stores.

Saw 87 at 3 places along the same road for $1.98 or $1.99. This was about 35 miles from my home.

Stopped at Exxon for the $1.98.

    89 = $2.08
    93 = $2.18

The only thing predictable about gas prices is they are completely unpredictable.
  • johnny4016johnny4016 Member Posts: 112
It must be nice to only pay $1.98 for regular unleaded and lees than that for Diesel. That's because you live back east where you still have governors, congressman and senators that will not put up with the gouging.

Here in Southern Calif. the price for regular unleaded is $2.70 a gallon, 89 Octane is $2.80 & 91 Octane is $2.90 and Diesel is $3.10. So we are paying a dollar more per gallon because we have a movie star for a governor and our congressman and senators don't care about the middle class and poor.

Look who is running the house at the Senate now? One would think that since she is from California that she could put an end to the gouging by the gas station. You can't tell me that they are not gouging when it cost the same for a barrel of oil as it did in the early 90ties when fuel was about $1.17 a gallon and now they are selling it for $2.70 a gallon. In addition most of the fuel comes from California, so why is California paying a $1.00 more per gallon than they are back east. Makes no since, other than they are gouging and making Billions in Profit. Makes me sick to my stomach.

There are valid reasons for higher gas prices in California, and gouging is not one of them. Read more here:

If there was "illegal gouging" going on, then the authorities would end it.

Someone has too much time on his or her hands. The cost to the taxpayers to create those hypocritical web pages just confirms my post.

I did noticed that all three web pages are government owned, which also clarifies exactly what I said in my post and how the American people our having to pay taxes for someone to waste time and create those web pages which I personally believe to be corrupt.

I noticed that the Governor of California was again on Television last night as an announcer for the Golden Globe Awards. The people in California do not need a governor who is trying to make friends with his counter parts in Hollywood by his appearances. We need a governor that is by the people for the people. Remember that saying.

I did notice that in the web pages you posted that it also confirms what I mentioned about where the majority of California fuel comes from, it's own oil wells.

Yes, California does have the toughest environmental laws concerning smog of vehicles. Every other year millions upon millions of California registered vehicles owners have to have their car smog at a cost of approximately $40.00 for the smog and $10.00 for an electronic message from the smog station to the Department of Motor Vehicles. This is just another way that California is making Billions each year from its citizens. Not to mention that the registration cost is so outrageously high and again Californian's are having to pay every year a tax on their registration for a smog abatement fee, environmental fees, etc. So it's not only added onto the fuel cost, smog test and $10.electronic email feed to the DMV for each of the million's of vehicles it's also in their yearly registration fees as a smog abatement fee. If you don't think that the California Government is as guilty as the Oil Companies in gouging our hard earned money then you either aren't from California or your not paying attention to how much the state collects. BILLIONS of Dollars every year are taken from its citizens and we have been promised better roads, police departments, fire departments, etc for decades. And every year on Election Day the same politicians are trying to pass several more bills to collect even more BILLIONS. This pass election we had the most bill's in California history on the ballot. Yet our roads are falling apart and have potholes every 5 feet large enough to bury you vehicles tire. Now your tires are all ruined, alignment is ruined and your nice car that cost you thousands of dollars runs like crap. Thanks to our Movie Star Governor and Representative Mrs. Poloski. They don’t care as much about family life as they would have you think. I have personally years ago as a disabled desert storm veteran tried to get help from her office only to be turned a way. She is just like our Governor, trying to make a name for them selves, and hiding their true agenda to the public's eyes.

Back to the cost of a gallon of fuel. Each state also charges a tax on each gallon as does the federal government, etc. California has the highest tax in the country and our government has done nothing during this time where millions of Californian's have to miss a meal or medication, etc just to buy a gallon of gas. Your thinking, yeah right, a gallon does not place a person in this condition. Yes that’s right, but over time lets say one year, that gallon is now 1,500 gallons. Since California is so large and people have to travel 50 miles to go to the hospital, not to mention the traffic jams sitting their wasting fuel. So yes that gallon at a $1.00 more a gallon than the people back east are paying is now $1,500.00. And this is just for fuel. Think about all the other cost. So you can see why there are so many homeless people in California. They can not afford anything anymore. Rent is averaging $1,000.00 for a small two-bedroom apartment. Yet the people that live here don't make enough to pay $500.00 a month. And our Governor is still acting like he's a movie star. Going to the golden globes to make his appearances for his counter parts to give him more money to run for governor again. Going snow skiing, breaking his leg, riding his motor cycle with no helmet on and falling down getting hurt, which is against the state law, etc. He still thinks that he's a movie star on the terminator. Now we have another politician as the Speaker of the House. I'm afraid that this country is in for a lot of trouble. It seems to follow what California does. If your not convinced that California has turned into a place for the mobsters who now call themselves the law makers, attorneys, Judges, Governor, Congressman, Senators, Movie Stars, etc. And that this doesn't effect what we pay at the pump for a gallon of fuel your either one of them or I'm sorry for you. As you will see in your future what these people are doing to our country. God Bless the USA.
  • larsblarsb Member Posts: 8,204
Thanks for the long explanation of things which are FAR FAR from the topic of this forum, but my point remains true:

CA gas prices ARE higher, and it's not because of "gouging" it's because of natural market forces which are unique to that region.

PS Phoenix gas is at $2.21-$2.24 today
  • johnny4016johnny4016 Member Posts: 112
In the 80ties and early 90ties we paid the same amount or more for a barrel of oil as we do today.

The only difference is now we are paying 2 to 3 times as much for a gallon of regular unleaded.

1980ties =$.85 per gallon for regular unleaded.
2007 = $2.70 per gallon for regular unleaded.

Is this simple enough? No pun intended, it's just sometimes some people need a full explanation of why we are being gouged at the pump.

$2.70 a gallon or more for regular unleaded in So. Calif. $3.10 a gallon or more for Diesel.
  • larsblarsb Member Posts: 8,204
You are way off on the "price of a barrel of oil the same now as the 80s and 90s" statement.

July 2006 saw oil at an all-time high of $78.60. Now it's more in the $51 range. but still FAR more than the 80s and 90s.

    see this chart:

    image

From around late 1985 to 2004, oil never was higher than $30 a barrel.
  • larsblarsb Member Posts: 8,204
Gas prices are LOOSELY based on oil prices.

In May 2004, oil was at $41 a barrel and the average USA price was $2.07.

Today, oil is $51 a barrel and the average USA price is $2.23.

You CA guys just be glad you are not in Hawaii - average price there today is $2.92 while California is "only" $2.58 :shades:
  • tpetpe Member Posts: 2,342
I seem to remember from one of your earlier posts that you lived in the desert. That's nice but you need to get out of the sun every now and then because your brain is showing signs of being seriously fried.

If CA prices are so high why don't you move? Maybe there are some things about CA that makes the high prices acceptable. Well you get what you pay for. BTW, I was out visiting CA before the current governor took charge. Guess what, gas was already considerably over $2/gallon.
  • imidazol97imidazol97 Member Posts: 27,651
compared to preKatrina prices. $1.81 in one part of town. Take 10 cents off from that so I paid $1.71 for gas at Kroger's stations.

    Sunoco $2.27, 87, $2.59 93.
    Shell $2.25, $2.57, 93.

Why in nearby PA or NJ or MD, price difference between 87 and 93 is only $0.20? For premium gas users here in Delaware, we need to pay more ($0.35 difference)
  • larsblarsb Member Posts: 8,204
As far as the difference between premium 93 prices in very similar areas:

Many times if a station is in an area which sells A LOT of premium gas, they will raise their price to maximize the profits on that octane. Most places it is 20 cents or so but in some areas the owner sells more and is taking advantage.

Other times and places, it costs them MORE comparatively for the higher octane, so they will charge more to make up their difference.
  • johnny4016johnny4016 Member Posts: 112
    93 Octane $2.90
    89 Octane $2.80
    87 Octane $2.70

    Diesel $2.99

Could someone please stop this insanity? Why can't we get our governors, congressman, and senators to put an end to the gouging? Sick in California.
  • larsblarsb Member Posts: 8,204
There is no gouging. Did you not read my previous posts and the links?

The Western region ALWAYS has higher prices, and it's due to normal market situations in that region.

Do you really think the people of California would have put up with it for all these years if it was illegal gouging? Get realistic my man.
