click on the Offroad Adventrues linkt to the left and let the pictures load. Welcome to Ford country!
I, too am shopping for a new truck. Mine will be a Tacoma. X-cab. V-6, 4x4. In driving ALL of the "compact" trucks on the market, the Tacoma seemed to fill the bill.
I'd narrowed my choices down to 2; the Ranger, and the Tacoma. Then, I started the decision-making process. I drove both trucks on extended, 2-3 day test drives. I derived my decision on what I learned in these test drives. There were a number of things (both good and bad) about each truck that I came across.
Ford Ranger: VERY COMFORTABLE TRUCK! Not quite as much power out on the road as the Tacoma, but still capable of doing what I needed it to do.
Toyota Tacoma: Seats too low to the floorboard, making it not quite as comfortable on longer trips, but tolerable nonetheless. On the road, the power was perfect. Not too much, not too little, right where and when you needed it.
OFF-ROAD:
Granted, I couldn't take these trucks where I REALLY wanted to, cause they weren't mine. My family owns 135 acres, mostly pastures and hay meadows, with a steep, 200 yard hill on the backside. So I got to do a little. But in the slow, low range, creepy crawling, I really couldn't find any significant differences between the 2 trucks.
The 2 trucks were as identical as they could be from their respective factories. x-cab, biggest v-6 available, 4x4, 5-speed.
Everyone who's against toyotas will whine and moan about the price. Yes, the toyota is higher. But, at the bottom line, there was less than $1200 difference.
Some will say that its not worth the extra $1200. Others will say "you get what you pay for". These were both well-built, capable trucks, with only a few drawbacks. I've decided that the toyota is a better choice. Does this make me a complete idiot? Some say yes. I could really care less.
Hope this helps. If not, good luck!

You're an idiot to think anyone would even entertain such a ludicrous thought! LOL!!!
P.S.-The locker does NOT disengage, it is only MEANT to be used up to 5 mph, though. Get a clue!
And I notice spoog doesn't give the link of the Ford towing the Toyota out??
However, if you have no more spine than you indicate, you SHOULD buy a yugo. Import buyers don't buy a truck to use it as a truck anyway. Yugo would probably serve the same function for ya.
What a wuss! Maybe you should get your momma's ok before sighning on here again. Wouldn't want to destroy your picture perfect world with my abrasive opinionated posts. whaaaaaaa!
This fat boy will......any time.
btw: it would be the 5th time, not that it is relevant. The Tacoma is still overpriced, underpowered, overrated, and feeds a foreign country. How many times I get kicked off this site doesn't change that.
Ignorant? You Yoda girls don't even know how your own trucks operate. You buy based on false reliability marketing gimmicks and claims. You buy so-called locking differentials and don't have a clue how to use them or even need them. You buy off-road suspension equipment to use your trucks for carrying groceries. Ignorant? I may be in a lot of ways, but being money ignorant is not one of them. I know how to buy a quality product and not waste money. I know what I am buying and how to use it. The Toyota buying ignorant community are the same ones who buy a VCR that continues to flash 12:00 because they are too stupid to know how to change the time and too lazy to learn how. They would rather pay an outlandish amount of money to continue being stupid and lazy.

If not please refrain from posting in this group. This group is about people who can answer questions, because they have either owned or currently own a vehicle with a toyota tacoma engine in it or for people who want to leverage off of other people, who have owned this particular models engine, experiances...
Thank You in Advance

"how could you drive over me if you can't catch me?"
Gee, I guess you got me there. Let's strap 5k lbs to the back end and see who wins! I guess if Toy Mota used real truck sheetmetal, you yuppie teenagers wouldn't buy them Tacoma's any longer. They would weigh too much to beat the Ford escorts in a 1/4 mile race any longer!
My very modest GrandAm would leave you sitting still. I guess that is what makes a good truck, huh? Racing?
Just the filter is about $55, there is no claim of increased hp with a stock filter swap. The cleaning kit is about $10.
I don't see any claims of increased horses in Katsohis's post. I think the benefits are better filtration. Although Unixgod did seem impressed.
I've heard that it is noisier with the k&n filter than the stock.
My questions to Katoshis is how often do you find you have to clean the filter? And is it worth the pain in the [non-permissible content removed] factor compared to disposable paper?
I bought it because in the long run it will be cheaper to buy it and re oil it than prurchasing Reg Filters.
Funny how "Whats his name" takes the economics road about his non Tacoma Truck, but chooses the "Other side of the fence" just to make fun of the filter
The filter is definatly a little louder, but nothing you can hear over the radio.
Has anybody cleaned their engine yet, and what did you use on it?
Thanks

Does it make a huge difference? No. Does it run any better? Subjectively I may be able say yes.
Does it save any money? I have never done the research, but I would say that with the initial expense and the fact that there is higher risk of dirt particles entering the intake, I would say it is not much if any benefit financially.
It's made, not just assembled, in the US. That is a huge plus either way.
GMC and CHevy had to IMPORT Japanese steel to make the Chevies frame and other integral metal parts. And YES, the Silverado is one of those trucks.
Enjoy your Japanese truck Unixgod!!!
Yeeeeeeehawwww!!!!!!
The K+N pays itself of after about 4 normal filter intervals. Again not to mention the potential bennies...
I agree Hindsite, though Vince's last few posts seam to show he is calming down a bit, at least in the Tacoma only Boards.
We should ignore those who are only here for the "Wrong" reasons. Sometimes i just can't resist showing people that just because they belive something, that it doesn't make it a FACT.
From now on i'll do my best to ignore "Mr Phillips/Maganavox".....LOL!
Again has anybody cleaned there engine yet, and with what?
-wsn
Whatever you use rince it off quickly.
As far as post #227....Yeah, don't put any harsh cleaners on that delicate engine. It has a hard enough time holding up on it's own. Don't put any kind of dishwashing soap on it. It might break it down to a lump of aluminum! HA ha! LOL!
If we were discussing cleaning Ford/Chevy engines, a gentle cleaning would not be applicable. With all of the oil and fluid leaks,
you would need some highly volatile solvents.
But since this is a Toyota page use the following cleaning schedule:
@100k miles, rinse dust off engine.
@200k miles, repeat
380,000+ miles on his 4 cyl. engine w/no rebuild.
He does take care of his truck though, he is
a firefighter and in his part time he does
a delivery service where he gets paid by the
mile, the thing is at about 300k his odometer
broke but his trip odometer still ran so he
calculated it that way since he gets paid
by the mile anyway. Can you believe that, the
engine is outlasting all the guages. Oh by the
way it still runs quieter and smoother then a
brand new Ranger. hehehe
I guess we displeased big brother.

Toyota has had a terrible time resolving the new year problems with the Tundra. What is not good for Toyota business is that they are not providing any compensation for those that have problem trucks. They just say to wait for a fix.
GM just bought back my truck. I had a 99 year Silverado. It did not have "major" problems, just one that they could not fix without tearing into the engine to find out what was causing it. Rather than go through that hassle and expense, they just replaced my truck with a like model 2000. I have to say that GM took extra good care of me. I am not implying that Toyota has worse customer service. Just saying that GM takes care of their customers too.
All these manufacturers are in the business to make money. Period. If you want to have them make things right, you have to persue the issue. None of them are going to volunteer it. I really didn't have to push very hard to just get a new truck after I put 18k miles on the first one.
Give the domestics a break. The vehicles and the domestic manufacturers are top notch these days.
Just because yourself or somebody you know had a bad experience, doesn't mean that they could not have gotten satisfied. Most likely the person did not know the process to take to get the problem fixed. After 4 failed attempts to fix a lifter knock, I wrote a letter to the BBB. Withing 10 days the process to get me a new truck was complete.
The truck I have now even has the 4:10 gear locking diff. Something I didn't have on the other one and wished I had gotten.
I have owned all GM trucks and cars. Not one but this one has given me any problems. I have put over 300k miles on an 84 GMC I had from brand new. I had very little problems with it the whole time I had it. Still ran pretty good with an excess of 300k on it.
The imports are good vehicles too, but I have to agree with Unix in that they are way too much money for what you get and they do not last any longer than the GM vehicles I have owned over the years. Just my preference.
What did you do exactly to get the ball rolling, as i'm sure he would be open to anything at this point.
Thanks in Advance...

took it out before getting rid of it and put it in my new 2000.they last forever!
There is an Edmunds discussion of K&N filters in the accessories area. Most everyone feels that there's little if any increase in H.P.
Too bad.
Mushy ride? Check the Air Pressure in the tires. I like the ride of mine with 35 front and 32 rear.
