Ok, lets throw out the HP and Torque talk. Golly, we sure do not want to get confused and assume a truck would be nice with this type of motor. Lets talk about fit and finish and reliabity. Which you say is more important than a strong motor.

Am I the only one reading all the fit and finish problems with the newer GM trucks or should I start drinking Dunkel and drop the natural lite. The only upper hand that GM currently has is the larger back seat in the ext. cabs. This is not a deciding factor for me personally, just like a fourth door for others when buying a truck.

You are being totally stupid if you actually believe that a 4.9 will out perform a 4.6v-8. And this is one of many reasons that I believe whatever validations or claims that you make on any truck issues is at the least susspect. I'm outta here.

Fit and finish is very nice on my Black 2500. very nice paint and lineing up of panels.

Yes...dump the Natural light and drink Dunkell. Being here in Michigan..you got a better chance than Roc!
How long it take you to get Down Town to the brewery? About 1 minute from Ren Cen.

I've read about the fit and finish not being wholly satisfactory in the magazines, but my panels line up, pewter paint is glossy, no orange peel. No problems with anything coming lose, falling off, etc. After 14,300 miles, it's still solid and rattle free inside too.

My biggest complaint relates not to how my truck or dealer has treated me. Knock on wood, but it's been fine. But reading the troubling stories of others is an issue I will consider when I'm ready to deal again. And I honestly don't know when that will be. I'm tempted to say after 3 years of ownership, so I don't have to come up with so much money. At the rate I'm driving, it will have about 72,000 miles at that time. On the other hand, it may be hard to part with this one if there is not a greater appeal elsewhere. At this time, I would make the same purchase all over again. Maybe not so easy! It was hard, and I waited months before finding the one I'm in. Not many like it either, since regular cabs only account for about 15% of the market.

I just bought my LS 1500 2wd ext cab long bed on the 4th or OCT. I have a slight vibe at 65-70. The dealer told me to drive it for a couple of days and then call them back if it continues.
I only have 80 miles on this truck. Did I just buy a piece of [non-permissible content removed]? I've heard that this truck is one of the best trucks out there. I traded my Ford ranger in for this only and now I'm finding that this my be the wrong thing to have done.

Yes, even the near perfect GM trucks have a few problems, especially in a first year model change.

However, GM is being VERY good about rectifying the problem or buying the truck back unlike many of the problems found in the competitor trucks. Ford is notorious for "wishing the problem away" until it is out of warranty or until too many people have the problem to keep it quiet.
If you read the posts, most of had their trucks rectified or gotten buy backs. The people who have gotten buybacks ironically went and bought another GM truck only new year 2000's.

If Chevy can't fix it, stay with it. They will resolve the issue one way or the other.

Thanks for your response. I really like this truck and I think it looks wonderful. However, I've heard really bad horror stories from others who are trying to have Chevy buy the truck back. I don't wish to deal with all the BS, I just want the truck fixed.
It seems like only the short beds have this issue.

Now I understand. If Zbad had gotten Ford to buy back the truck he bought used with 35000 miles on it then Ford would be AOK. Why didn't you just say that from the beginning? Quick synopsis, G.M. buys there NEW broken trucks back but Ford won't fix used trucks with 35000 miles. Why is a stud with a "six figure income" buying a used truck? Please don't reply Zbad don't want to hear the whining and crying.

Is it just me or has Zidiot gone over the edge? Pretty much in every topic he's pissed someone off. He even single handedly got a decent topic shut down for a week. Mr. six figure electrical engineer know it all supposedly buys a used 98 Ford with 35000 miles on it has a lot problems then goes to every topic bashing Fords. You say one thing to him and it strikes a nerve and you get name calling. Guess he wants this post shut down too. You should of seen the posts of him going to the Tacoma site and bashing them and telling all the Toy owners they wasted their money not buying his almighty Z. Talk about insecure. I always want intelligent replys it's just that you are incapable of giving one. Thanks for proving my point above.

currently own a '99 Sierra long bed and have been experiencing vibration 55 -65 mph. brought back to dealer several times, they replaced rear shakles (sp) and leaf springs, along with 7 new tires with no relief. GM has been notified and waiting to see what they offer in return for buy back. Have dealt with this problem since purchase and becoming quite frustrated. Like everything else about vehicle, however, not sure how much money will lose if bought back. Anyone have any idea how that is figured?

Recently had GM voluntarily buy back my 99 silverado 2wd reg cab. Their final offer letter gave me back my original trade equity and payments made, even paid the bank early pay off fees. Also, no charge for mileage (only 6800). Took a couple of months partly due to miscommunication between dealer and GM. I did loose some on my original trade-in. I bought the 99 Silverado about $900 below dealer invoice (advertised special of the week), so I conceded on the value of my truck on paper at that time. But overall I guess I can't complain too much. Just got a 2000 GMC ext cab couple of weeks ago. So far so good. If you get another be sure to test drive very carefully. There are good ones and not so good ones.

I think its pretty noteworthy that most of the GM truck owners getting buybacks from GM are still buying another GM truck. That HAS to count for something. Not all these people are just loyal GM buyers. GM has a good truck. The ones that aren't so good, GM seems to be taking care of them the right way.

I have been trying to get my 99 Z71 fixed
for some time now. Still waiting on u-joints, it
sounds like my rearend/driveshaft is going to fall
out everytime I take off. I called Chevy and got
a case number, (at the urging of my salesman), had
a message on machine tonite, not eligible for buy
back, dealer says all trucks make noise. I was at
dealership for three hours, trying to get me to
buy 2000, but offering me nothing for my 99, but
I made it home in time to call Chevy back and request that they re-consider. Will be back at
service dept 1st thing in morning. I understand that Chevy takes .25 off for each mile and will
reinburse for aftermarket items. At any rate, we
will see if Chevy is so good about fixing things.

I noticed the same thing. Sometimes makes you wonder if some are upgrading just a bit too. You know, a gotta have color, option etc.

One thing is for sure. GM is selling tons of them. Almost 3/4 million on the road already.

I have a '99 Silverado extra cab with the same vibration. I found a website that shows GM issued a service bulletin that lists a fix for the 2 V8 engines. The site is http://www.nhtsa.dot.gov/cars/problems/ Also, check out postings 1023 & 1146.

I ordered my Sierra July 22, build wk 9/27, picked up truck yesterday. I was a little nervous because of all the problems associated with this truck.
Also my truck is 2wd, ext cab, 4.8, locker rear, General tires, 3.42 rear. All the stuff everyone has had problems with. I only have a 100 miles on it and have no wind noise and no vibration at any speed. (yet). Also no clunking sound either. The General tires are the 255s. I say this because a couple hours before I picked up my truck I test drove a new silverado with same rear,no locker,4.8,ext,etc,but with general 235s. That truck had a slight vibration around 65mph and also clunked like a bad u-joint. That truck was built in Michigan. My truck was built in Canada. I wonder if these problems tat people are complaining with is location problem. Like some location got the shippment of bad tires? or something like that. Anyway I feel lucky at this moment and I hope it holds up...both truck and luck:-^ I paid 500.00 over invoice plus they hit me up for that extra 250.00 for advertising that they say that GM charges them. I complained to no avail. I told them if they put a sticker on back of truck I was charging them 250. for advertising. They laughed and put sticker on plus front and back tag frames with their name on it. Those are allready in trash. Thanks all and good luck. Bill

I saw your post where you have 80 miles on the truck, and you're driving 65-70 mph and getting vibration.
I don't know if you're aware but the factory recommendation is not to run it over 55 mph (true of every vehicle?), for the first 500 miles. Probably not related to vibration; but thought this should be mentioned.

Have you tried opening and closing the rear windows a couple of times then driving to see if there is wind noise. I did this on my 2000 Silverado and found defective hinges that would not close the windows properly therefore causing the wind noise. The windows had worked fine until then. Also, have the General 255's. After about 1100 miles, front tires started to feather causing tire noise and high speed vibration. Dealer rebalanced and aligned. At 1800 miles small chunks of rubber are falling off of the tires. Dealer looking to replace all four tires (defective). General is slow in responding; looks to be about a month wait for new tires. Hope the new ones aren't defective but with General's reputation who knows.

To be honest I have not opened up the rear slider yet. I did open and close the back pop out windows though. As far as the tires go...so far so good. It's funny though, I was told by the salesman (at delivery) that if I had trouble with the tires that I do not come back to dealership but go to a local General dealer. In my area the only tire dealer that sells General is Montgomery Wards. I told him I am not going to fool around with all this BS and if the tires start acting up, Well, I guess I would just go buy a set of Michlins. Bill

Boy, am i glad I got to this and read alll your responses. Kind of bummed out that the Chevy and probably its' sister too, have this vibration problem.There's no way i'd pay 30k for a defective vehicle, even if the dealer bought it back. My wife and I have owned Toyota cars and trucks for years without any problems. From the sound of it, they are probably still building better quality vehicles than GM or Ford and Chrysler. That's too bad, because I was really wanting to give them a chance.

But in the real picture...I doubt if it's even 1/10 of 1% of all the trucks sold by them.

I am not sure, but I know that of all the trucks I test drove here in Dallas, they all vibrated.
These were all 1/2 ton - reg cab - long and short bed - different trim packages - different engines.
Somethings wrong with design......

I have the same problem with the advertising fee that you do. That was a great idea of charging them $250 for putting the sticker on your truck.HA! I just ordered a 2000 Silverado LS Ext. Cab 2WD. I argued until I was blue in the face about that damned advertising fee. In my opinion that is there cost of doing business. Chevrolet charges them for advertising right. My question was "Who does this benifit?" Certainly not me, so why should I pay for it? What's worse is that it's a tax write-off for them too. Not only are we paying for it but they're writing it off. What's wrong with this picture?

I hope I don't have the vibration problems. Maybe they will have it fixed by then. It has a target production date of Nov. 8. Probably won't be that soon though. Chevy's may have a few problems but so does Ford and Dodge. It's personal preference. I do like some things about the Ford but I like more about the Chevy.

Got mine for $250 above invoice plus 1% ad fee. Best deal I could find. This dealer also offers free oil changes for the life of the vehicle if you keep their plate on the front. I'll just put it on before I go get an oil change and then take it back off. It's worth the hassle for the oil change.

I personally think your dealer is full of crap (no offense). You shouldn't have to take your vehicle to a General tire dealer. Chevrolet should take care of it. It's their problem. If you do have problems with the tires you should be able to request another brand from them if you want. If you spend that kind of money on a vehicle they should bend over backwards to please you. Just my opinion. I will expect nothing less.

Spoke with GM last Friday re our '99 Sierra and they have offered to repurchase our Sierra, however, we will be charged a mileage fee around $1400 based on the mileage at the time we notified them (GM)directly. This was at 7,000 miles and after many trips to the dealership to get the truck fixed. Not happy about that, but not happy about the vibration either. They also stated that will not pay for any after market items. They also stated that the "ADM" said the vibration was within normal range? I wonder if he actually test drove the vehicle? Anyway, we are probably going to go with a 2000 Sierra, possibly an extended cab but not sure, but definitely test drive the vehicle at 60-65 mphs. Don't know, however, how the price difference is handled and what type of negotiation is available since we are suppose to handle this part with GM. This will be interesting to see how much over invoice I will have to pay. Hopefully, close to it.

I have a 99, 5.3, ext cab, Z71 and it rides real smooth. Hopefully no problems later on. Has anyone gotten their 99 recall (possible loose bolts on front end - dealer will tighten to spec) fixed? I haven't yet.

Talked to a dealer today about chrome wheels on the 2000 model trucks (small dealership). He said that they have replaced every set of chrome wheeled trucks they have sold within last year; said that they don't order them any more because of the apparent problem. Anyone have any information on this chrome wheel issue?

Just demo'ed a 2K 2WD yeterday. It was fine around town but when I got up to speed on the Hwy.
65-70 MPH it had a front end shimmy that would shake your teeth loose. I told the sales rep I was sorry he had to demo new trucks like the one we were in. I thought that the front tires needed to be balanced but now from what I am reading it looks like it maybe something more.
