Do you really NEED a 4x4?

  A couple of years ago I was doing some work with a rancher in Eastern Oregon. He grew up in the ranch country but made a ton of money as a developer in Portland. He always wanted to have a ranch again, so he tinkers around with a couple thousand acres of farmland and rolling rangeland. He took me around his ranch in a brand new Expedition (loaded with leather). Man, he didn't hold back. I couldn't believe where he was driving us, but I was actually very impressed with what that big truck could do. I guess if you have the money, those big expensive SUVs still can be used for serious off-road. Just makes me want to read the title on a used truck to make sure that guy never owned it.

  I owned a 97 Dakota 2wd, without limited slip.
  
  One day, at my uncle-in-law's house, I got stuck on the most simple smooth gravel driveway possible. I backup into a slight incline and somehow put the only drive wheel in a slight indentation - presto, I was stuck. Could not move backward or forward. Aside from the embarrassment of being the only person ever stuck on a dry smooth dirt driveway, uncle-in-law had to pull me out with his Silverado, he didn't even have to use his 4wd..
  
  moral: If you buy a 2wd at least get limited slip, it's well worth the extra $300.
