Its the crooks on Wall Street. We directly or indirectly bailed them out and they cheer lead oil prices up despite tons of supply and OPEC producing beyond their quota's. Some of these investment people are lower than bank robbers and the government just sits idly by because of the connections and money flowing between Wall St. and Washington. They talk reform, but water it down thinking the masses are too dumb to figure it out.

Another nickle pop (actually 6 cents, which is what the Coke machine in my daddy's drugstore cost back in the late '50s).

    RUG 3.05
    MidGrade 3.17
    Premium 3.27

    Diesel 3.15

Looks like $3.50 by the summer isn't out of reach.

Ticked up another nickel on average. More driving latter part of last week caused me to fill-up a little earlier. Yesterday was able to find a station for $2.96, the rest were at $3 (actual $2.999) or higher for 87 octane.

Kind of what berri said, seems the price-jacking is getting ridiculous as they are back to the "fundamentals out the window". Read on bloomberg the main reason for the hike to $86 was because of the great economic news / jobs report numbers of 162K jobs added last month. Problem is that included 48K temp census workers and doesn't take into account the MILLIONS still laid-off, hundreds of thousands whose unemployment benefits ended yesterday, or the massive teacher lay-offs that are going to occur in the next month or so (starting to happen here already). Recession's over my [non-permissible content removed] These j-a's haven't learned their lesson yet & aren't going to unfortunately. Know the commodity is global but yessh!!

    Sorry for my rant

The prez and vice-prez must have friends in the oil business and financials that are profitting from this increase in gas prices and the crude oil prices. :P

Was gonna say.... Like the last prez and vice prez weren't up to their eyeballs in it? And the ones before that and....

gas prices going up during an administratione seems to be the one thing tying them all together.

Still hanging in the $2.55 - $2.65 range here.

But this guy had the economy knowledge and was going to fix everything in 6 months. Now gas prices are skyrocketing without any cause other than speculation being allowed on his watch and the companies raising prices at will.

The oil speculation industry is bigger and more powerful than any political party.

Prices aren't really "skyrocketing" yet either, let's not be too dramatic :P

At least this one hasn't given $20BN in tax breaks.

I think the Is a Higher Gasoline Tax Good Or Bad For America? discussion may be a better place to take this thread.

No change in gas here, but diesel went up two cents to $3.17.

Watch what George Soros does. He made over $2 billion on the last run up and crash of the oil futures. I thought Congress was going to pass a law that required the buyer to take delivery of the oil. To keep speculators out of the market.
  • fezofezo Member Posts: 10,386
They sure talked about that for exactly that reason. Obviously hasn't happened.

    It will crash again, too.

Regarding Congress, see above about who influences the president...historically, you get the laws you pay for.

Sorry about that - didn't mean to cause a ruckus :surprise:

I will say this though, not sure if O said he had all this economic knowledge & wisdom & he was going to fix this lickety split but IF he did, dead wrong. NO ONE could completely fix the past 8 ~ 10 years of toilet flushing and the like in 6 months, 6 years maybe, be it dems, repubs, indies, neocons, Reagan's ghost (and when did he become the official GOR - God of Republicans, at least according to the comedians, I mean "reporters", on Fox News)...

Nothing to report on the fuel front, will try to report next week on fuel only ;)
  • steverstever Guest Posts: 52,454
I don't think you're doing much with that post to end it either. :P

Let's get back to gas prices please. Maybe we'll just move the whole thread over to Forget Bushisms, Biden Gaffes, We have Obama blunders.

One Chevron here popped 4 more cents to $3.09, but a Shell that practically shares the same asphalt is hanging at $3.05.

    Central New Jersey Shell Stations finally rose their prices after about 2-3 weeks with regular at $2.59 a gallon. My two local stations have raised their prices yesterday to the following;

    Shell 87: $2.65 a gallon
    Shell 89: $2.85 a gallon
    Shell 93: $2.95 a gallon

Oh by Memorial Day weekend things are not going to be good I see!

had to buy gas, my DTE was reading 2 miles.
just paid 2.959 for RUG. could have saved 6 cents if i paid cash.
the station i normally fill up at, same brand, was 5 cents cheaper cash/credit.

Our Shell card gives us 5% discount on Shell gas. Many stations around here charge an extra 10 cents if you use a CC. My local Shell has stayed at $3.12 for RUG for the last several weeks. The Shell stations along the Interstate are all at $3.25 now. Shell diesel is still at $2.99.

I should have bought that VW TDI.
  • imidazol97imidazol97 Member Posts: 27,675
our prices. Now up to $2.859.

For the record, stations don't charge extra for using a credit card here.

I just spent the past two weeks driving around a lot of OK and TX. I saw a lot of oil wells and very, very few actually pumping. Wall Street speculation is driving current prices. However, as the recession lifts down the road and places like India, China and Latin America continue increasing oil consumption, I expect gas will cost much more in the next 5 or 10 years and $3 will look cheap.
  • steverstever Guest Posts: 52,454
If you got around Midland, you could sure smell the stripper wells working. Not much drilling activity that I saw when I was in that area last Christmas.

There should be a glut of jet fuel around for a week or two with the air traffic shut down over parts of Europe. That'll be an excuse to raise prices. :P
  • jae5jae5 Member Posts: 1,206
My last two fill-ups were for $2.92 and $2.99 respectively.

Was lucky on the $2.99 fill-up due to stopping by a Speedway near work - everyone else, including my usual and back-up spots were running $3.05 for 87 octane and needed fuel. With so much construction didn't want to chance getting stuck & perhaps running out.

The BPs, Shells and Mobils are in the $3.08 range.

Haven't run Speedway in years but the truck seems to running ok.

    That is all.
  • steverstever Guest Posts: 52,454
    $3.02 regular
    $3.22 for premium

    $3.15 for diesel.

That's at the Fred Meyer - the majors are about .04 a gallon higher.

    The Associated Press

ANCHORAGE, Alaska - Most Americans are paying about $3 a gallon for gas. The residents of McGrath, Alaska, saw their gas prices jump by that amount in one night. The price at the only pump in the remote town 415 miles northwest of Anchorage went from $6 a gallon Friday to $9.20 the next day.

Crowley Petroleum Distribution says it was forced to raise the price because the winter nearly drained the town's supply, and the only option was to fly in more fuel.

The cost increase is the difference between flying the gasoline and shipping it on a barge. Crowley says it won't be able to send a barge until June at the earliest.

Some of McGrath's estimated 400 residents have formed an anti-Crowley Facebook page and are trying to boycott the company while city officials look for ways to get cheaper fuel.

smarty - didn't realize you are another of us Jerseyites. Where in NJ? I'm down in Manahawkin where gas is running in the low $2.70 range. Anywhere from $2.68 to $2.73. Actually there's a Shell station at $2.77 if you really want to spend that much.

Not to be a mutual admiration society but I rather like the area you're in as well.

I grew up in NW Jersey so I'm used to space and hills. Of course of late they've been blowing up hills and filling up space...

very true! there are some really nice areas of NJ to live in; its too bad shows like Jersey Shore and Jerseylicious are destroying our state's reputation!

I live around farms and when I tell people that, they say, "you mean you live in PA right?''

people don't think of farms when they think of NJ!
  • fezofezo Member Posts: 10,386
When I was a kid if you went up to Sussex County there were loads of farms even right on Route 23. Lots of dairy and things like that and plenty of corn. There used to be a breed of corn they grew up there called Luther Hill. Some little ears of white cor that were the tastiest ones you would ever have. Used to go to summer camp in Stillwater.

To keep things relevant, gas was 29 cents a gallon at the time.

Please don't politicize this discussion with that unless you want to hear about the bunch that Illinois shared with the US from their Chicago corner of the state...
Forget Bushisms, Biden Gaffes, We have Obama blunders

To the best of my knowledge, Sarah Palin doesn't hold any office in Alaska and therefore doesn't represent the state.

Gasoline here did it's Wednesday/Thursday jump. Now all the way up to $2.899. We had gotten back down to $2.69 approximately in some areas of the region.

Holding at $3.09 at the grocery pumps here in Boise. I've seen $3.15 at the Chevron in the pricey part of town.

Drove about 500 miles the last 2 days and the range was from a low of 2.72 (Exxon in Prince Frederick today) to 2.89. BP in Edgewater at 2.83 with Exxon across the street at 2.79. Several Wawa stations at 2.74.

I knew a guy who worked for the Bureau of Weights & Measures who travelled the state with a large glass calibrated graduated cylinder & pumped gas to test. He said there was enough variation in pumped volume in both directions that minor price differences were less important than the dispensed volumes. But he wouldn't tell me the stations that pumped more gas than their meters indicated! After discussing the issue with him, I pay less attention to minor price variations among stations than to long-term trends for the industry as a whole.

Here in Flag, it depends on how close you are to the freeway (US40). Near the Fwy, it's $3.05ish. Off a ways, it's $2.85ish. For regular. Go west to Williams, 32 miles, and the toll is $3.40ish for regular, catching the Grand Canyon visitors as they turn to go to the Canyon...so get your gas in Flag going east or west on 40 if you can...

Here in Burleson, Tx, I paid $2.52 last week. Today it's 2.79 for RUG. Listening to the news, they say prices will go up more and more due to the heartbreaking oil spill in the Gulf. Here we go again . . .

First fill-up on my new to me 2008 Nissan Frontier. Costco $2.97 for Regular. It got 17.07 MPG on 225 miles of short trips around town. Need to take it on a trip that is longer to get a better idea of the hwy mileage. 17 MPG is the EPA estimate.
