I think a lot of people like high beltlines and low visibility. It makes them feel safe, and although it hinders visibility, this is a society that takes pride in being oblivious anyway.
It stands out today because others have abandoned that look, and Prius proved standing out is a good thing when you're after green buyers.
The Volt does have a heavy dose of "geek chic" like a Prius, and this will get it some attention. I don't expect the Volt to fail, there will be a following for it.

Chicago also now has several Kia Soul taxicabs, apparently.

Also saw a Cube.

I don't like the look of the back of this car. It looks too big and out of proportion with the rest of the car. I think BMW did a much better job with the folding hard top on the 3 series.

That's odd, i've seen lots of them both here in NH and last winter in AZ. My wife calls them "Maxi-Coopers".

I also got a look at a new BMW Z4 (E89), also black. I saw him in my rear view mirror but he couldn't keep up with me. :P

Apparently we drive on the same road.
Gotta say, this is one that looks much better in person. I really liked it. It's very, very low. Real sleek. Photos don't convey how sporty the proportions are. My impression improved tremendously after seeing it in person.
Unfortunately I can't say the same for the E sedan, which I saw this morning, next to me, driving in. Traffic was heavy so I got a good, long look at it.
It's sort of blocky, in a weird way it actually reminded me of the CTS. The creases are more pronounced. I liked the outgoing E class a lot better, in fact that was one of my favorite sedans when it comes to conservative style. The new one doesn't do it for me.
The funny thing is the tail lights are similar, but with the coupes proportions, the whole package simply looks much better.
I hope my next door neighbor keeps her E350 sedan. Unless she trades for a coupe, that is.
Saw a new Lacrosse at the dealer last night. Meh, it's better looking than any Buick sedan from the past 3 decades but their is nothing breakthru about the design. Inside and out looks like they just tried to clone a Lexus ES. And price it like one too. The only thing I can see it doing is canabalizing sales of the Lucerne.
I think the E coupe will be a success...it kind of mimics the CL, is cheaper than the CLK but has more equipment, and it is eye-catching, especially with the windows down.
Reminds me of my dad's Buick Electra from the 70s, when I was a kid. You get a panoramic view to the sides.
It was the one redeeming features on the C "coupe", i.e. hatch.
Today's sightings - a black SL63 AMG in my workplace parking garage, and a black Challenger.

Very blocky. I bet trunk space is pretty good. At least the shape is functional.
There actually is a function to them, though. The rear window acts as a wind blocker, so it can go back up even when the top is down.
BMW designers had to make the C-pillar meet with that window, though, to they ended up with an odd shaped top reminiscent of the Pontiac Solistice.
Money and taste are often enemies.
Been seeing quite a few new Fusions lately.
I must admit it actually looked ............ stunning in person.
Hard to believe that the same company made the ugly 4 headlamp Tiburon less than 10 years ago and was just entering the NA market 10 years before that. Now that's progress.

Today I have seen 2 new E class, a black coupe and a grey sedan. The sedan had a weird brown interior - like maybe a shade lighter than a football...or at least thats how it looked to me. I don't know if grey and brown really work well together.
Also saw one of those MB coupe-sedan-type things. Hardly even looks like a Benz, way too curvy.
The GLK hasn't grown on me. It's awkward at best.
The E class is, a little. Maybe white is a good color for it.
Just to vary it up I also saw a new Nissan Rogue.
GLK has proportions like a Tonka toy in my eyes. Should have appeal to a certain wannabe-tough demographic, though.
There's a Rogue in the parking garage at work. I think that's a laughable name for a vehicle in that segment.
Cargo space should be far better than, say, a BMW X6 or Acura ZDX.
Just as lumpy in real life as in the pic.
re: the GLK...only reason I've looked twice is the apparent good visibility, without the gunslit windows and the fake glass area thats really sheetmetal. Oh, and it looks like it might have decent headroom...I'm looking forward to sitting in a BMW X1 whenever it shows up.
