For whatever reason, the shape of the greenhouse and its relation to the rest of the car rubs me the wrong way. The first thing I thought when I saw it was "Lumina".

I think a lot of people like high beltlines and low visibility. It makes them feel safe, and although it hinders visibility, this is a society that takes pride in being oblivious anyway.
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Not sure why, but I never thought Lumina. The previous Jetta, maybe, or the first Dodge Stratus.

It stands out today because others have abandoned that look, and Prius proved standing out is a good thing when you're after green buyers.
  • fintailfintail Member Posts: 58,409
The Lumina designer is probably still employed with GM...

The Volt does have a heavy dose of "geek chic" like a Prius, and this will get it some attention. I don't expect the Volt to fail, there will be a following for it.

Saw my first new TT today (a droptop). Strange ... specs say it is actually narrower than the previous gen, but, visually, it is FAT! Doesn't look like a sleek sportscar anymore, IMHO. I guess its the narrow taillights that make it look that way.(?)

So blocky looking. Not much originality. But I guess there's only a limited number of ways you can style a square box.,

.....two new 2010 Buick LaCrosse; they're nice looking, though not really innovative; kind of a Lexus-Lincoln-Jaquar hybrid. No surprise there, I guess.

Chicago also now has several Kia Soul taxicabs, apparently.
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
The real story is inside, though. The interior is gorgeous.

I'd say the Previa is more like styled egg not a styled box :P

Saw another new Camaro today, black. Also rode in a 2009 Pilot, loaded Touring model which belongs to someone at work. Nice comfortable big thing.
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Saw 2 new Prius yesterday, plus 2 Insights. One of the Hondas was that funky light blue metallic color. Very 80s flashback, I had an Escort GT in that color, only darker.

    Also saw a Cube.
  • texasestexases Member Posts: 11,105
Not that Smarts are new, but the one I saw this morning was the first one I saw with a brush bar on front and a tow hitch on the back. What, he's got an Airstream in the driveway?

  • boomchekboomchek Member Posts: 5,516
lol, there's a lot of smart cars in town used as promotional vehicles. The municipalities also use them as parking enforcement vehicles.

In candy apple red color with the hard top up.

I don't like the look of the back of this car. It looks too big and out of proportion with the rest of the car. I think BMW did a much better job with the folding hard top on the 3 series.

...gray Ford Flex with white roof on Oxford Avenue and Napfle in NE Philly this morning.
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Saw a used Flex for sale at the Ford dealer on Rt. 113 in Deleware. Those have been out for a while, no?
  • lemkolemko Member Posts: 15,261
This is the first time I saw a Flex in the "wild." The previous time was at the All-Ford Show in Carlisle in 2008.

That's odd, i've seen lots of them both here in NH and last winter in AZ. My wife calls them "Maxi-Coopers". ;)

I've called them Giant Coopers since I saw the concept car.

I got a quick look at a new Mercedes-Benz E500 Coupe..very sleek and expensive looking in black.

I also got a look at a new BMW Z4 (E89), also black. I saw him in my rear view mirror but he couldn't keep up with me. :P

...bright red Dodge Avenger and an unusual little white Ford Transit van. Is it based on the Fusion platform? Looks like it shares the same headlamp clusters
  • texasestexases Member Posts: 11,105
Saw my first R8 on the way home last night, all black. I think I'm getting used to those LED running lights. Also an A5 or S5. Good looking real (not 4-dr) coupe.
  • fintailfintail Member Posts: 58,409
Saw a white GT-R visiting in the garage of my building last night. At least I assume it was visiting, never seen it before.
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
    Isn't it Focus-based? I think so.
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Same here, first E coupe I've seen in the flesh, driving home last night.

Apparently we drive on the same road. :D

Gotta say, this is one that looks much better in person. I really liked it. It's very, very low. Real sleek. Photos don't convey how sporty the proportions are. My impression improved tremendously after seeing it in person.

Unfortunately I can't say the same for the E sedan, which I saw this morning, next to me, driving in. Traffic was heavy so I got a good, long look at it.

It's sort of blocky, in a weird way it actually reminded me of the CTS. The creases are more pronounced. I liked the outgoing E class a lot better, in fact that was one of my favorite sedans when it comes to conservative style. The new one doesn't do it for me.

The funny thing is the tail lights are similar, but with the coupes proportions, the whole package simply looks much better.

I hope my next door neighbor keeps her E350 sedan. Unless she trades for a coupe, that is.

I've seen a few new E-classes around here. I don't mind the looks of them, I actually think it's a nice evolution from the last generation. The tailltights remind me of the Lexus IS tho and the quad foglights are gimmicky IMO.

Saw a new Lacrosse at the dealer last night. Meh, it's better looking than any Buick sedan from the past 3 decades but their is nothing breakthru about the design. Inside and out looks like they just tried to clone a Lexus ES. And price it like one too. The only thing I can see it doing is canabalizing sales of the Lucerne.
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Dunno, I like the new Lacrosse. Nothing exciting, but inoffensive. You gotta think of the demographic.
  • fintailfintail Member Posts: 58,409
There are two kinds of foglights for the W212 - LEDs, or goofy dual round units. The LEDs denote a highline car.

I think the E coupe will be a success...it kind of mimics the CL, is cheaper than the CLK but has more equipment, and it is eye-catching, especially with the windows down.
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
I like the pillarless feature also.

Reminds me of my dad's Buick Electra from the 70s, when I was a kid. You get a panoramic view to the sides.
  • fintailfintail Member Posts: 58,409
They also all come standard with the pano roof, which adds to the open feeling. A good idea.
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Didn't get a chance to notice, but those are nice.

It was the one redeeming features on the C "coupe", i.e. hatch.
  • fintailfintail Member Posts: 58,409
Which oddly enough has resumed production for the Euro market.

Today's sightings - a black SL63 AMG in my workplace parking garage, and a black Challenger.
  • boomchekboomchek Member Posts: 5,516
It's the old coupe with a new front and rear end grafted on.

Saw another E sedan today, brand new, temp tags and all.

Very blocky. I bet trunk space is pretty good. At least the shape is functional.
  • fintailfintail Member Posts: 58,409
I should get one of those for my rental in Germany next month...although part of me is hoping for an S-class upgrade :shades:
  • fintailfintail Member Posts: 58,409
I am sure some people will think it is all new.
  • lemkolemko Member Posts: 15,261
in black with the top up on Rising Sun Avenue near Devereux in NE Philly at lunch time:

  • fintailfintail Member Posts: 58,409
Looks so much better with the top down, and the rear not showing.
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
That's the best angle, IMHO, because it hides the Bangle Butt plus the awkward C-pillars.

There actually is a function to them, though. The rear window acts as a wind blocker, so it can go back up even when the top is down.

BMW designers had to make the C-pillar meet with that window, though, to they ended up with an odd shaped top reminiscent of the Pontiac Solistice.
  • fintailfintail Member Posts: 58,409
That sure beats having a screen as a windblocker as everyone else does :shades:

Money and taste are often enemies.
  • fintailfintail Member Posts: 58,409
Today I saw a Ferrari 599 Fiorano and what I think was a MB CL600.

Been seeing quite a few new Fusions lately.
  • texasestexases Member Posts: 11,105
Saw my first Ferrari California, black. Did nothing for me, heavy looking, with a fat rump.
  • boomchekboomchek Member Posts: 5,516
    Parked on my street.

I must admit it actually looked ............ stunning in person. . Much better than in photos. It was silver in color and had aftermarket BBS style rims on it.

Hard to believe that the same company made the ugly 4 headlamp Tiburon less than 10 years ago and was just entering the NA market 10 years before that. Now that's progress.

The coupes have grown on me too, although I have only seen a couple on the road. Well, I don't care for the huge lights, but the weird dip behind the B-pillar doesn't offend me anymore, it's a unique feature. Seems like a lot of car for the money too...although badging it the same as the sedan is questionable IMO, when it costs much less and attracts a different consumer.

Today I have seen 2 new E class, a black coupe and a grey sedan. The sedan had a weird brown interior - like maybe a shade lighter than a football...or at least thats how it looked to me. I don't know if grey and brown really work well together.
  • fintailfintail Member Posts: 58,409
Saw a new Equinox...looks more upmarket than the previous one, not that the tall station wagon segment has any appeal to me.
  • bumpybumpy Member Posts: 4,425
Saw a Lincoln MK something-or-other, the fancy Taurus one. Thought it was a new Kia at first. :(

Also saw one of those MB coupe-sedan-type things. Hardly even looks like a Benz, way too curvy. :(
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Followed a GLK350 on my way in today, then parked next to a new white E-class sedan.

The GLK hasn't grown on me. It's awkward at best.

The E class is, a little. Maybe white is a good color for it.

Just to vary it up I also saw a new Nissan Rogue.
  • fintailfintail Member Posts: 58,409
Saw a red Genesis coupe this morning. I assume it was a base model - non-metallic looking paint (I call that shade "clown red") and basic looking wheels.

GLK has proportions like a Tonka toy in my eyes. Should have appeal to a certain wannabe-tough demographic, though.

There's a Rogue in the parking garage at work. I think that's a laughable name for a vehicle in that segment.
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
    At least boxy = practical.

Cargo space should be far better than, say, a BMW X6 or Acura ZDX.
  • texasestexases Member Posts: 11,105
Saw my first lil' Lexus hybrid:
    image

Just as lumpy in real life as in the pic.

re: the GLK...only reason I've looked twice is the apparent good visibility, without the gunslit windows and the fake glass area thats really sheetmetal. Oh, and it looks like it might have decent headroom...I'm looking forward to sitting in a BMW X1 whenever it shows up.
