Does anyone know what coating GM has put on the truck frame? I have 2000 Z71, 4 door
I was looking around the rear wheel well and noticed the paint ( or at least what I thought was black paint ) on the frame was scratched. I assumed a rock was kicked up. I touched it and it felt soft. Then I scraped it with my finger nail. It feels like wax.
I may not be an automotive engineer, but how does GM expect a wax coating on the underside of a vehicle to last for 10 to 20 years ?
Tim, How difficult were the Putco Piplines to install? Did you have to drill holes? Where did you get them and what did they cost? I think they look great and might get a set for my 2k Z71 Pewter Lt Ext.short Sierra. Thanks for the pics and the info
Theres a new one out??? Since when did this happen??? Boy work on the weekend a few hrs and u miss alot. The silverados were out today hauling alot of bricks and all were holding up much better than the fords. My friends dads silverado took 100 (24 pd bricks) in his 2wd ext cab barely no sag. New ford offroad truck barely held pallet of 20 bags (80 pds each) it had alot of sag. This is just an observation. No dodges to compare with today
The clock/radio station indicator light suddenly went out (Delco, factory) This is only with 300 miles. Anyone have any idea what the problem may be? Thanks
I've been reading about the new 6.6 diesel engine that GM is coming out with. I pull a 16,500 lb. fifth wheel and got to have one!! All I've heard is that they will have 300hp. and 525 ft. lbs. of torque and will be hooked up to an Allison tranny rated to 19,000lbs. Does anyone have more info on this engine or the 2001 Chevy 1-ton duallie. I want to order one as soon as I can. Picture on post #513 really got the juices going.
I was going to buy a GM as well because I liked the grille but the big thing that turned me off was the wheels. I think the chevy's look much better. I also liked the "1500" badges, and the wider side moulding on the Chev's. Anyway, I sacrificed the grille for the other stuff and besides, we don't have a GM dealer in our town, and although he could have got me a GM, it would have cost me $300 more.
I have the power seats in my truck (Cloth) and am really happy with them. It's the first time I decided to spring for the extra dough but they are worth it. You can make much finer length adjustments with the power, not to mention the up/down/tilt . With the finer adjustments available in the back/front action, I seem to be able to find just that perfect spot which you can't get with the manual jobs this makes a big difference for us "Old" guys. I prefer the cloth to leather. It seems to me that over time, the leather creases and starts to look shabby. Not to mention the fact that the price they charge for leather is ridiculous. Sure wish GM would offer the power seat option for the driver side only at a lower price, they cost me $600 bucks and the wife has never moved hers from the day we got it.
Tim, those Putco boards look great. Sort of a combination between Bars & Boards. Never seen a set like that up here.(Ontario, Canada) We don't have near the selection of "Dress up" accessories you have in the U.S. of A. The bed rails also look real good. I used to put box rails on all my trucks but you don't see many on the trucks around here so you can't really get an idea whether you like them or not. Yours do the job.
Yea....$425 in the US, $600 to us Canucks. By the way Ryan, I have the GM bug deflector on my truck (up here $90 bucks) and so far it seems to work great. Sits nice and low and you can hardly see it from the driver's position. Sits quite close to the hood so you want to be careful when washing behind it so you don't slice the back of your fingers. Seems to have a fairly sharp rear edge.
Bill didnt know u were from canada. I didnt get the power seats with mine i liked the manual better. Just slide it all the way back and im good to go. Seemed like a waste of $425 to me.
IS the hood predilled??? Some bug guards say they use predrilled holes and i havent really noticed under the hood if they had predrilled holes.
Hey skiddo1, does your user name have anything to do with "Ski-doo", the snowmobile? Just asking, because I own a Ski-doo dealership. Hey Ryan, we also sell Johnson / Evinrude and Boats, so we can look after that fishing boat you were talking about earlier.
How should I know. Didn't you read my post earlier where I stood back and had somebody who knew what they were doing install all the stuff on my truck. Really, I think the are, and if I remember, the kit comes from GM with inserts, you know, like those little anchor thingees you sell at Menard's, that you insert in pre-drilled holes on the underside of the hood.
Yep....we sell all kinds of Boats. Most of the "Bass" type we handle are the deeper variety since Walleye fishing is the big thing up here and the guys want to use them on the big lakes. We are quite close to Erie & Ontario. Our big line is the "Princecraft" which is aluminum. They compete with "Lund" for the high end aluminum market. Real nice units, but not cheap. I've sold quite a few to U.S. guys because of the favourable exchange rates and they get a lot more bang for the buck.
Im looking more into a bass tracker or maybe if i can get my dad to really go all out a nitro bass boat. More like a john boat and not a very deep hull
You can get into some serious $$$ for the "Glass" stuff like Nitro/Ranger/Skeeter etc. Nice units but most of our guys seem to like a multi purpose rig that you can not only fish out of but also use it as a "Family" boat and play with water toys like tubes and skis. Not that you can't use a full blown Bass rig for that stuff as well, but it seems most people want to be able to have a convertible top, for the shade, and to do this, you need a full windshield to support the top. Bimini tops are available but not very sturdy.
The 5 holes are square in the underside of the hood...and 5 nylon inserts push into them for the screws to go into. I think just about every bug guard for the New silverado uses that method.
Parker 17,
The boards are expensive on Putcos site...and can be had for a better price at Autozone....but they are not cheap any way you look at it. They are solid heavy Stainless steel with a very high luster. Front boards are $599.99 and rears are $299.99...so $900 plus tax. Install took 4 guys 10 hours on a hoist for all 4. We didn't really need 4 guys....but they were there. I'd say have a second guy though...and a hoist was just because I had access to one. Two brackets go into the cab mounting bolts...so no drilling there. These are huge and heavy and need more support though. On the under side of the Rocker panel..(bottom of door kinda)..there is a lip like where the body skins come together.....4 holes are drilled in each side for brackets..or ws it 3??.....also where you step most has another bracket to go to the frame....which requires a drilled hole. I didn't want to drill....but you get over it. So 4-5 per board for fronts. Rears have two brackets each that mount to the rals that go from left to right under the bed...(look in your rear wheel well...and you will see what I mean) 4 holes per each rear board for those. It sounds like a lot...but it's really simple. They are solid as hell and could be danced on if you had to!! LOL
Good Luck
Bill, I never seen them either....found them online at first after a guy here turned me onto the Putco skins for the bed rails. The combo of boards and nerf bars is what I liked....as well as the dip in the front. They used to be shaped like this:
I was told to expect my Silverado anytime between 03/13/00 to 03/18/00. My truck was built on 02/22/00 & shipped on 03/24/00 from Fort Wayne.
I think that there won't be much of a difference of days between Washington State & Nevada! B.N.S.F. goes all over the west, so I'm sure that you will see your truck before the end of this month! rcoos
I installed a set of Warn 4x side steps on my 00 GMC Sierra ext cab shortbox Z71 this weekend. What a pain in the butt to install but that is a different story.
It was while I was under the truck I noticed my rear drive shaft at some point has made contact with the frame crossmember that is in front of the rear axel. I have nice black strip on the drive shaft and the crossmember is missing its wax coating and has rust spot forming on it. Now I have never hauled any thing heavy in this truck but I do go off road with it although I have not been any where that would have caused major articulation of the rear end. I didn't see or feel any dents in the drive shaft so I think it was minor contact. I don't have any vibrations in this truck so I am not to worry about it.
However after seeing this I feel that if you really want to play off road then I think these trucks require a lift kit.

One disadvantage (not for me because I like dark windows) is that, at least when I bought mine, you can only get it in tinted glass.
The opening to the shell on mine is connected with a boot, not a second slider.

Chevy by far is the best when it comes to hauling

But I think the rears would be useless with that shape. I like the straight look.
Well I've bored people enough about these things.
