is also a problem when using the Flowmaster 50 series on an ext cab. (also on a 2500HD CC with the 6.0 as a co-worker found out)Tolerable with the 70 series but too quiet for me. Flowmaster uses a 70 with a resonator on thier catback susytem, but I went with a slightly louder 50 series and a resonator. Sounds good and no resonance to speak of. (On a 5.3 Sierra x-cab)

    Avalanche 5.3L V8 F/I Fuel Injection Performance Kit #57-3033

This is available now! I called one retail store and he quoted me $348.
This will be my 1st mechanical mod followed by a Magna Flow muffler.
I did a Torsion lift and gained practically nothing from it. Fab tech has a lift available for the 1500 ($900) that will be my next move.

What might be gained from the FIPK over just the K&N Filter? I've seen posts on the noise levels that the FIPK produces at cruise speeds. Reference has also been made to the fact that the stock intake setup is a holmhultz resonator - for quiet performance.

Has anyone compared the high capacity air cleaner that comes with the Z71/Z66 to the standard model? The K&N filter is 1/2 the thickness of the stock filter on my Z71.
  • txyank1txyank1 Member Posts: 1,010
K&N FIPK but I would never pay the money again for an AirAid system. I'd buy just a K&N filter instead. There's a few here in Town Hall that don't think much of a K&N filter. Say it's too open and lets too much crap through.
  • timfarntimfarn Member Posts: 289
What was your beef with it? Isn't an oiled K&N supposed to catch more particles than standard paper? Did the K&N naysayers mention any info to back up pass through of dirt?
  • whitevette01whitevette01 Member Posts: 79
When look at the intake pipe from the filter to
the throttle body it has a long extension when
compared to my 00 Silverado 4.8. What is
the purpose, the 4.8 made no sound, if this
    is like a muffler.
  • obyoneobyone Member Posts: 7,841
Has less turns than the stock intake and is less restrictive. The Airaid cannot be compared to this as it doesn't replace the intake from the MAF to the throttle body but only the air filter assembly AND it costs more than the FIPK. Go figure.

I'm still looking for the link. Hopefully I will find it. What the article stated was that a mining company was spending excessively on stock filters for their trucks and was researching alternatives. K&N being one of those tested. Oil analysis had shown an increase in contaminants on the trucks that had the K&N filters vs. those that had the stock filters. K&N's website states that their filters shouldn't be used in this type of application anyway. I've had my system on for 18 months. I don't show any excessive buildup in the MAF or throttle body area. Will be doing oil test analysis in a couple of weeks. Guess I'll find out then.

where it would do that much when I looked it over while installing it. And the thing that really ticked me off was the words "For offroad use only" printed on the instruction sheet INSIDE the box. I see they now advertise that they are CARB approved. I had it on a '99 4.8 and didn't notice much diff. in performance or mileage. On my '01 5.3 it appears to have a little more but also dropped my mpg. I would like to see a fro real comparison of the AirAid Kit vs just a K&N. I'll check one more tank of daily driving and probably take it off again. May try just a K&N filter.

Sports Truck mag did a before and after dyno test on the airaid and flowmasters a little over a year ago. The net result was -2 HP combined and -2 HP with only the airaid. Is this telling us something?

My husband purchased a red AV this summer and we both love it. I think we were one of the first in our area to have one. The looks we got, and still get, are incredible. I have had people stop me to ask where I got it and how I like it. Needless to say, this is my husband's toy, so I rarely get to drive it. What I am wondering, though, is where I can get a miniature diecast model of the Av. Ever since he got the real thing, my husband has been looking for the miniature to put on his desk at work. I thought it might be a nice surprise to put it on the tree for Christmas. If anyone out there knows where I can find them, specifically a red one like he has, I would appreciate it if you could let me know.

I've seen those models for sale on ebay.
Do a search for chevy avalanche or chevrolet avalanche.

I subscribe to Sport Truck but must have missed that article. I remember several months ago they had a piece on the diff. ones available but no evaluations. Which I thought was pretty useless. The Flowmaster I put on simply for the sound. As long as it doesn't hurt performance or mpg that's ok. I'll fill up tomorrow and check my mpg again for my daily driving and if comes out lower again off the AirAid comes. I do like the sound from it too, but you only get it at WOT. Sounds a little like that second 4bbl kicking in!

was at the dealership today and noticed an av with dual chrome tips out the back ,looked real tuff so i found the owner and he was more than happy to fire it up for me. it sounded impressive and kinda loawd to say the least.what he had done was they cut the pipes right before the muffler than installed the flow master than went back to dauls out the back, he said their isnt enough room under this truck to do true duals.

I got one free from Chevy when I signed up for a brochure long time ago. It's made by Maisto. I don't know if you can buy these at the store. They are going for as much as $20 on ebay. I still have mine in original box and I ain't gonna open it. ;-)

Sams had the RC Avalanche complete with an rc boat on a trailer...

Toys R Us has a remote control AV in three different sizes, varying in price from $20 to $70. The colors I saw were blue and red. However, the truck is jacked up on monster tires and all have the brush whacker front end. The stickers on the hood and sides are kind of bogus. Obviously, they are not very realistic looking. I could not find a die cast realistic model in any size.

Does anybody have the part number for the rear tent unit accessory that is available for the Avalanche? Saw one on an Ave at a local car show. The manufacturer's rep at the show said they cost $230. Does anyone have one? What did you pay for it? How much of a pain are they to put on and take off? Thanks!
  • txyank1txyank1 Member Posts: 1,010
at a Good Guys Car Show in Ft. Worth recently for $20. I think they were Maisto, but they were indeed one of the Brand Names in die casts. I have not seen them yet in K-B Toys which is where I buy most of mine. BTW...I never did get one from GM when I ordered a brochure.
  • ygmnygmn Member Posts: 179
GO to www.GMpartsdirect.com for the tent they have and inexpensive as well.

If you look under the pics section there is some close up pictures and I remember reading about someone putting the tent on and saying it took a little while.

Search for tents under Chevrolet Avalanche Owners forums it should direct you to your answer.

I saw your post (#1119) about the RC Avalanche. Where did you see this? Do you have a link? Thanks!
  • ygmnygmn Member Posts: 179
It is a company of Wal Marts that is like Costco. You have to be a member etc to buy some stuff cheap. Be careful though sometimes they are not cheaper than Wal Mart!

Anyone have a problem with the exochromatic drivers side mirror. The mirror on my Avalanche (and a friends) seems to be distorted when lloking at headlights. Its almost as if you can see double (i.e. on set of headlights seem to look like 2) and the image get worse the farther the lights are from you. There is no "crispness" in the image from that particular mirror. I had the dealer change the mirror glass today but this did not totally correct the problem. I have had the autodimming drivers side mirrors before without this problem. Any help would be appreciated.
  • shawsvaleshawsvale Member Posts: 4
I have noticed the same thing. It doen't seem to happen all the time though. The image does look blurry but I haven't noticed it enough to be too concerned. What did the dealer tell you?
  • timfarntimfarn Member Posts: 289
I haven't noticed the doubles, but there is a noticeable differnece that will catch your eye as the mirror adjusts when lights fall in behind.

The driver's mirror also has some shake when driving into a headwind - it seems to be in the glass only and not the entire unit. Anyone else have this?

I met the guy who took delivery of a white Av the same day as ours at the pumps. In an earlier post, I told the story how he had left a panel on the tailgate and bounced it off the road at 55 MPH. The panel suffered a tear on the top, which can't be repaired. He is to get a panel next week - the dealer list is $805, good guy price of $450 from another dealer - ouch. He said he lucked out in that they have a warranty replacement panel for another Av that was delivered scratched and he will get it for $0. (It's been almost 3 months since damaging.)

In comparing notes, we discussed how the panels are easily scratched by any rough edges. Objects scooted across the panels will leave a mark. If you need to carry something on top use a blanket or rug to protect the finish.

Other noteables - excellent ride and MPG that improves the faster you go. Interstate driving at 70-75 MPH seems to be the best.

I have seen custom dual exhaust systems mentioned. I would like any advice on how the custom sytem was fabricated or if any has heard of an aftermarket kit. For those that have completed this, how does the cutout look behind the rear passenger wheel with no pipe?

I am considering purchasing a 5.3L Ave and need some input as to pro's and con's of 4:10 vs. 3.73 rear ratios. Specifically, Will the the 4:10's adversely effect the gas mileage. I read that the Ave feels a little sluggish as compared to the 1500 Pick-up with the 3.73 due to the extra weight of the cladding(just kidding). The Ave is supposed to weigh like 600lbs more..is this true?
  • shawsvaleshawsvale Member Posts: 4
I had a 1999 Sierra GMC which seemed a bit snappier than the avalanche I have now. I blame it on the extra 845 pounds on the avalanche.

    TRUCK HP WIEGHT
    Sierra 270 4833
    Avalanche 285 5678

The power to wieght ratio is much more on the sierra. It would be worth while to test drive the avalanche with the 4:10's.
  • skidmarksskidmarks Member Posts: 47
Test drove one with the 3.73 rear..I agree..I also have a 99 Sierra and it seemed comparatively less responsive. Also I was not impressed with the steering assist. Is the steering wheel smaller in diameter or am I imagining things.
  • snowmancomicsnowmancomic Member Posts: 6
dealer ordered me new glass for my mirror and replaced it...seems a little bit better but the "double vision" with headlights is still noticable at times

The onset of winter and the joys of Avalanche ownership compel me to share a few observations from a recent no-pressure carwash:

Like someone else here, I found water leaking past the mid-gate. Some had pooled around where the mid-gate bolts down.

The gutter on the crossbar overflowed and water drained down the cargo side of the mid-gate. The front of the cargo mat also had water on top of it.

The water collecting underneath the cargo mat was on the "lake" side of "a few drops". It eventually dried up on its own.

The upper rear window seal on the passenger side comes down and forms a nice sleeve around the bottom seal. On the driver's side it's too long and doesn't cover the lower seal at all. When the mid-gate is closed it mashes them together.

The top bolt on the grab handles sits in a cup that fills with water and doesn't drain. Good thing TorX fasteners are not prone to stripping.

I have the 5.3L with 4.10 rear. I've been logging my gas mileage and seem to be at, or just below, 14MPG. I do a lot of town driving to and from work, and the occasional freeway trip. I was concerned about the mileage as well, but it seems to be equal to what I was getting on my Grand Cherokee. The 4.10 seems to make the Av a little more snappy as well. Hope this helps.
  • skidmarksskidmarks Member Posts: 47
Thanx Jel....but I was mainly interested in highway mileage. I cruise alot at 70mph. I am used to getting around 19 mph with my Sierra 5.3L and 3.73 gears. I think the Ave should get 18 at 65-70mph even with the 4:10's. Anyone second that opinion?
  • dallisdallis Member Posts: 8
my av 5.3 410 got 18 mpg on a 300 mile road trip (hwy)this is at only 500 miles on her, so i am hoping for 20 after break in, i whould definatly go 410 the low end power is much better for running aroung. the trade off is only about 1-2 mpg but worth it.good luck.

I rented an Avalanche with Z71 package. The rear wheel clearance seems excessive compared to the front. Also a small car can hide behind the vehicle.

Is an Av without the Z71 better proportioned? Will the ride suffer without the package?
  • skidmarksskidmarks Member Posts: 47
Hey guys, found a black Z71 with graphite leather and 4:10's. Got book for my Sierra and below Invoice for the Av....snagged it up and it's a BEAUT!!! The gears make a difference! Will report back on the mileage. 65mph seems to be at 1900rpm.Any recommendations for aftermarket running boards?
  • txyank1txyank1 Member Posts: 1,010
weekend. Didn't find any Av's. Saw one RC model that I thought was an Av at first, but on closer inspection turns out it was an Expedition with the back cut away. Wonder why it wasn't a SuperCrew? Box said Expedition.
  • avwifeavwife Member Posts: 2
Thanks - I went to the Maitso web site, and they list the Avalanche, but they are not selling it yet it is only for display purposes. I couldn't find any on E-bay or at K-B toys, either. Guess I will keep checking around. Who knows, maybe if enough people show an interest, they will start selling them. In the meantime, if anyone knows of anyone around the Atlanta area who has them for sale, I would appreciate the info.

On the way to bowhunt Friday evening, I took a shot from a small 6 point buck in the right rear door. His left antler left a small crease and scratch in the middle of the door and his right put a mark on the front door cladding. His body brushed back across the rest of the cladding on the truck.

The cladding was abraded enough by the contact with him that it is discolored. I am surprised at the cost of the replacements - front door cladding is $104 list, $78 wholesale and $62 + shipping gmpartsdirect. The rear door is $95, $71 and $57. Rear quarters forward and aft list for $38 and $63 respectively. Repairs to paint and repair metal would be 2-3 times or more the cost.

Plus, I'll have spares to maybe play with some painting of the cladding.

It was as if he knew I was going after his big brother or daddy. He turned around in my lane as I attempted to go around him and gave me his best shot. I was practically stopped in the other lane (no oncoming traffic).

My wife had to stop for a WIDE 8 pointer this AM and I had another mature 8 run in front of me. These boys have got one thing on their mind...

I received a red av model for Chevrolet. I would be willing to send you mine (still in the box) for free so you can get it to your hubby for Xmas if you would track down a Pewter model for me. I'm not worried about when. I too thought it would be neat to have it on my desk but since the color is wrong I'd forgotten about it.

    Contact me at fritchen@charter.com

Tim, You are supposed to get him, not the other way! Used my Av for deer hunt Sat & Sun in NW MO. Do I ever love this thing! I got a nice 8 and my 14 year old took a button buck. I teased him he shot the spots off.

Had some spillage in the back from the deer but the pressure washer took care of it in short order. Very nice deal.

Also, you posted earlier about your left mirror bounce. Mine does it also, but only above 70 MPH or if I have a stiff head wind. Only viberates the mirror, not the casing.

Hope your AV is Ok, I worried about the exact same thing all weekend with mine.
