Bikersully,
Thank you for explaining the AC thing to me. I needed the explanation. The sad thing is, I took it to the dealer once already and this is what the service order says:
Cause: INOP
Correction: pressurize, leak test, discharge, evacuate and charge AC - DIA
Evaporator Core Leakage Test - Diagnosis
Switch Assembly - AC clutch cycling pressure - Replace Switch Asy -AC Clutch, R134A Refrigeran
Can I still be out of Freon? $113.15 in warranty work with no result for me. I know that the cycling on and off must NOT normal in the 2 second increments! I still have to go back for the rattle. It was not the wheel well as someone suggested before.
With that I emailed my salesman and asked him a few questions about the truck. "When it arrives what happens first" type questions. Hoping to a least hear from him that he hasn't forgotten about this old die hard......... WELL GUYS ABOUT 3:25PM HE CALLED TO TELL ME MY TRUCK WILL BE READY TO PICK UP TONIGHT AT 8:PM! SOMEBODY PINCH ME..........:)......... A WEEK EARLY? I CAN'T BELIEVE MY EARS.......AFTER CALMING DOWN.....MY WIFE THROWING COOLED WATER ON ME, TELLING ME TO SNAP OUT OF IT IT'S ONLY A TRUCK I TOLD THE SALES MAN I'LL BE IN WIFE THE FUNDS AND A CHECK 9:30AM IN THE MORNING !!!!!!!!!!!! Stay tune.......
In her purse of course............
I took the rubber nubs off of the cage after reading about plastic pin troubles. I followed a suggestion on this site about unscrewing the plastic braces and sliding out the nubs. Works great now.
Yep, definitely AT tires (with the 15" wheels). One of the guys said, "and you didn't get charged extra, they must have been out of the HTs".
Anyway, smells great, rides great. This sounds kind of sad, but I already knew how to operate most of the stuff because I downloaded the Owner's Manual in .pdf format last week.
The pre-finance person, the one that tells you about the survey, mentioned that anything other than a Ford alarm would void the electrical system warranty. Alarm would be $399. We'll see.
I can't believe they wanted to charge $199 to VIN-etch the windows. $199!!!!! You can order a kit to do it yourself for $30 or less over the Internet. And if you are lucky enough to live in a place that supports the H.E.A.T. program (like VA, PA, Austin TX) the Police Dept will do it for free.
Thanks to all that continue to support the group with the info (rjkunkle..go HG ST, dberndt, et al). I'll be printing out the gas door thing to keep it handy.
I suppose I'll have to cut back on reading the posts to have more time to drive.
Tint, flectors, Christmas is coming, the bed'll get a mat...

1) Took the ST in at 7:30 (had an appointment/AC checked out also)
2) ST to be ready between 1:00 and 2:00
3) Called at 12:30 to make sure it would be ready
4) Was informed that the locks were not installed and needed to be keyed to match the vehicle. (DAH! I knew that!) I am speaking with the Asst. Service Mgr.
5) And....it would cost ME $120. (NOT!)
6) I told him it was included and he said, "As far as the Service Department was concerned nothing was going to be done until he found out who was paying for this! The Voucher made no reference to the locks."
7) I called the 800 # on the Tonneau voucher
8) Vanessa (great help!) said that all was included and she would call him. I warned her that he was a horse's A- - !
9) The Asst. Service Mgr. would not take her word for it and the issue climbed up the Ford Corporate ladder (3 times) until he spoke with John the Tonneau Cover Program Manager.
10) The Asst. Serv. Mgr. was informed by John that it was covered.
11) I then called the Asst. Serv. Mgr. myself to see if all was well and he said, "I just wanted to make sure my Tech got paid for doing this. I am not going to loose a good Tech over a Tonneau Cover!" He told me it would be done by 5:00 pm.
12) You guessed it! I was there at 5:00 and they and not even started to install them!
13) At 6:20 I drove off with my vehicle tonneau installed.
Yes, the Service Manager will here from me this morn. Did not want to loose a Tech., well how about a customer!
I am impressed and happy with the cover. I believe we will enjoy it.
Oh, he also mentioned that he did not want to put another one on. They (Ford ?) told him that it would only take 10 min. to put the locks in. Well, that was the longest 10 minutes I have ever experienced!!!
Sorry for making this so long. Needed to get this off of my chest.
Not enjoying "customer no-service" here in Atlanta!
By the way! This dealership had a Silver ST. Don't think anyone will want to do business with them though!
rjkunkle-- Thanks for the Fuel Door fix letter. Did anyone notice that they are now calling Island Blue -> Dark Teal??
Mean while my card was charged the 600 dollars .They told my wife it wouldtake 3 hrs to install.I think they are nuts.
let you know more later
On a different note I want a toneau hard cover, but mine did not have one. Can I still get one anywhere for the $590.00 price?
TO: tires@customersupportctr.com
I recently purchased a 2001 Explorer Sport Trac. Yesterday I had the tires inspected and found that my 15" AT's are not part of the recall.
For me, this presents a problem in the face of other events which seem to still be evolving:
1. Ford is not installing Firestones on current production models.
2. Ford will be giving customers a choice on future models.
3. Additional tires/sizes are still being added.
4. The news states that the CEO of Ford and Firestone intend to 'make it right'with concerned customers.
My wife and I are very concerned about ALL Firestone tires and would like to have them immediately removed and replaced with Goodyear tires!
The cost of the replacement tires is well over $600 and I don't feel that I should be so burdened when this is really a Ford and Firestone problem. If I take the action upon myself, I will not get reimbursed for the purchase of the new tires.
I request that arrangements be made to have (5) Goodyear Wrangler AT/S tires be installed on my vehicle, at no charge, by my local Ford dealer, Evergreen Ford, Issaquah, Washington.
I have been, and hope to continue to be a dedicated Ford customer. I believe your records will show that I have owned one or more Fords
since 1975, the year I started driving. I am saddened by the events of the recent past regarding the tires. I really enjoy my Sport Trac. I am an active participant on the internet web sites and message boards relating to the Sport Trac. I would hate to lose Ford as my automobile
supplier over a tire companies stupid error.
Please notify me as to how you plan to resolve this problem.
Thank you,
I copied it, modified it slightly to fit my vehicle and email it off.
It will be interesting to see how FORD responds.
I had told a few friends to try this dealership ,sure hope they aren't as sorry as I am.We will be telling everyone we know not to go to this dealler for anything.
By the way spttrc were did you buy your ST, hope not the same dealer PEACHTREE FORD
While I was there I picked up my cargo mat that I ordered as well. It was $40 and it fits nicely. I recommend purchasing it. I had things in the back before and they kept sliding around in the bed.
Now I'm just waiting for the tailgate molding to come in and everything will be A-OK. I've been wondering about my A/C as well though. I have definitely been glad that I waited for the Ford tonneau cover. It is well worth it--operates well and looks nice!
Happy STing!
Dberndt: Our problems appear similar. I do not feel you have a freon leak. The fact that your compressor cycles on and off every 2 seconds even after having your system checked should point to another problem. (assuming after service you have a full charge. RIGHT?) In my case the dealer remove 2 ounces of freon, they were concerned about an overcharge causing the high pressure switch to malfunction. Anyway if it was due to lack of freon the air would never get cold. (at any speed) I am not sure what it is but my ST idle jumps allover the place when I am at a red light. If I find a fix soon I will post it.
I don't expect it to be much more than a multimedia brochure. But will report if there is an interest.
They called me Wednesday and asked how I was enjoying my ST so far.
I told her I really enjoyed it that I get alot of people looking at it when I go by. :-)
She asked what I thought of the quality on a scale of 1-poor to 10-excellent.
I told her 8 and she then asked what I had found wrong with it.
I told her of the gas cap rub and how the dealership said they would fix it and ford told then to hold off fixing any until they get a solution to the problem. (i.e. the run around and see said she would look into it)
And that the driver side rear door molding buckles when the door is opened.
I told her the molding is on crooked as well as the molding on the front driver door.
And that the rear molding has a dent and the paint has been rubbed off so they have ordered a new piece.
I also told her about being able to feel the air blowing through the door handles.
As well as condensation accumulating on the handle.
Have any of you noticed that.
She said none of the other people have noticed that but she would make a note of it.
We talked a little while longer and she asked if she could call back in a couple days to see
how me and my ST are doing.... I said “Please do!!! I may have more to tell you.”
So everybody check you door molding and make sure it is on straight.

I take my ST in tomorrow to get my door bottoms painted...whoopee! I wonder if my loaner will be the Cobra Mustang Convertible that I requested...right!
I'm thinking about lowering the ST a few inches...any suggestions? Keep you all informed..
1. Is air coming out from door handles supposed too?
2. My a/c does take a while to get as cool as I expect it should.
3. Can somebody one more time tell me how to get a hold of the letter on the gas door rub?
4. I'm getting a lot of grief over having the Firestones.....
5. I installed a Yakima lockjaw bike rack, for 4 bikes. Best to buy from a Yakima dealer (less expensive than through Ford). Per an earlier posting, yes there is more wind noise.
6. Hard cover for bed just got in and gets installed Tuesday.
7. The ST looks a lot better than the Nissan that people compare it too....
FYI... I, as well as some others on this site, have noticed that ford seems to be changing names for some of their colors (i.e. black appears as ebony on this list, and island blue is dark teal).
Good luck on your new ST.
Bob
Also, how long has the Tonneau taken to arrive at the dealer. I ordered mine in July and it is not in yet. My Credit card has not been charged yet so I don't believe it has shipped yet.
ON AUG 12, I ORDERD MY 2001 SPORT TRAC WITH MOST OPTIONS. AS OF TODAY MY DEALER STILL DOESNT HAVE A BUILD DATE. DOES ANYBODY HAVE AN IDEA WHEN I COULD EXPECT MY TRUCK? I HEARD THE FACTORY SHUT DOWN FOR 10 DAYS FOR THE TIRE SCREW UP!!
ALSO ANYBODY KNOW WHAT TIRES FORD IS USING KNOW?
THANKS FOR A EXCELENT SITE !!

It has a multimedia interface ala Macromedia and QuickTime with some short movies, more for effect than utility. For example, you would expect a movie demonstrating how to remove the tonneau cover, not so. Actually you can tell the tonneau cover used in the demo is a mock up. But the effect is appreciated. Asking for more information takes you to a segment of the owner manual in .pdf format covering the current topic. They spent some effort on the topic of the CD/cassette. The buttons "work" and play music when you click on the presets. The CD6 still gives brief explanation of what the buttons do, but no bells and whistles.
The Sport Trac demo audio is narrated by a male and the Sport audio is narrated by a female. Apparently they are a couple, he owns the ST and she owns the Sport. If you place the CDROM in an audio CD player (I just hit play on my PC's audio cd play) you get to hear a discussion between the two with a brief overview of the basic, common features of the audio system: fade, balance, bass, etc. Of course, in the political correctness of the day, she's in control and he's lucky he can tie his own shoes.
Compared to just a plain old manual, I'd give it 4 stars out of 5. If I gave it a 5 it would just invite people to argue how it could be better.
I tried to program the first key and could never get it to work. After a couple of attempts, I tried the second key and the process worked fine. So I plan to go back on Monday and ask for a replacement key, unless they can figure out why that one key won't take the programming.
Any ideas here?
In there she stated that putting another alarm, other than Ford, would void the electrical system warranty. What's the poll on here regarding alarm systems? If you got the Ford alarm, how much was it? I was quoted $399 if you already had the remotes, and $499 if you didn't.
I know the debate about the "value" of the sealant/undercoat/etc. Other information on the "package" deal.
Tint front windows: $ 99
Factory alarm: $399
Leather protection: $199
Undercoat: $199
Paint sealant: $199
or everything for $699
My Ford dealer contracts with a local aftermarket accessory shop to hande the tonneau. I gave them my keycode about a week prior to install and they were able to have a key cut so the lock cores were set before I arrived. Good time saver in theory but apparently the new key was cut slightly off so my ignition key doesn't work in the cover. They've promised to reset the cores so I can use one key for all--probably will take the cores out and borrow one ignition key so I won't be without the truck or cover. They had the truck for a total of 45 minutes--install itself took between 20-30 minutes.
The gas door does not rub, but only by about 1/16 to 1/32 of an inch. They do not want to change it out until it rubs. I also found paint chipped off of the edge of the front driver side door. Also, the thing that really irritated me at first was that they left out the overhead console with the garage door opener compartment (and compass/thermometer). After thinking it over I do
not really mind because the garage door compartment does not even work with my opener. I do not want to wait another 6-8 weeks simply for a compass/thermometer. In my opinion, the console is kind of cheap looking anyway.
Anyway, here is what I really need to know. How would one verify that Ford did in fact but on the 4.10 limited slip rear axle. This is the one thing I do not know how to verify. I looked on the sticker in the front driver side door and didn't see anything recognizable. I crawled underneath the rear of the vehicle and did not see anything. Could someone tell me how to verify it, please! It says the truck has it on the window sticker, but it also said it had the console. So here I am trying to verify that they did not leave anything else off. Thanks in advance for any help!
I had a (non-Ford) dealer employee responsible for prepping the customer for delivery of their new vehicle, who wasn't sure if the car I just bought had ABS, tell me to take the car out somewhere and slam on the brakes to see if the ABS engaged. If it did it had it, if it didn't then it didn't!
Since I knew it didn't have it, I didn't bother to try...
