You have a VUE? Are you a dealer?

How long have you had it and what else can you tell us about it? Do you have a CVT or V6? What do you think of the interior? If you owned an SUV before, how does it compare?

Sorry for all the questions, but we are starved for real-world information here! Thanks--
  • crj1crj1 Member Posts: 70
I have a post up a little farther in this disscusion. My wife works for GM and has a VUE as a company car to evaluate for the next 3 months, thats how I have one. I drive it most of the time and its a great vehicle so far.
  • crj1crj1 Member Posts: 70
It is a V6 AWD, I also have a 2002 Bravada and its not much smaller really than that. The interior is alright, not the greatest but good for a vehicle in this price range, the design of the interior is great and the interior quality is just as good as a Escape or CRV in my opinion.
  • dindakdindak Member Posts: 6,632
Space is really important to me as many SUVs big and small seem to be lacking in this area. If the Saturn is as big or bigger than the Escape, I will be very pleased. Gas mileage is also very important and I think the CVT 4-banger will be perfect for that also. Gas prices seem to have stabilized, but it's a rough Middle East these days and $3/gallon gas is a possibility again.

Sorry I missed your earlier post. Thanks for responding to my questions-- if you don't mind, I think you will be a great source of real-life info over the 3 months!

We are hoping to replace our '93 Explorer with the VUE-- so any info you throw into the mix is much appreciated. I, too, will be very interested in what your MPG averages on the V6. Have a Saturn L300 which has a V6, so know what my mileage is on that-- and certainly know what we've been getting with the Explorer. Am intrigued with the CVT-- but wonder about power. Anyway, rest assured, any info you post will be read with much interest!

ps-- what exterior/interior colors do you have? cloth or leather? any options included?

    thanks!

I will keep you updated, we have the gold exterior with the tan cloth interior.

Just curious. crj1, your impression of the steering. Is the "feel" acceptable?
  • crj1crj1 Member Posts: 70
Yes I think the steering is very good. I did some stopwatch acceleration runs today from 0 to 60 and its about 8 seconds flat so its pretty quick, that time is about what I expected considering the LS sedan with the V6 does it in just over 7 seconds. So far I have been pretty impressed with the vehicle.
  • drwilscdrwilsc Member Posts: 140
How does the V6 VUE acceleration compare with your 2002 Bravada? I recently test drove a Trailblazer (which is a twin model of the Bravada with the same engine) so I have an idea about how the Bravada must feel.
  • lbthedoglbthedog Member Posts: 198
Was just curious about how people will acclimate towards the electric boost. The only liability I've seen is that the traditional GM style tilt mechanism isn't part of it. In other words, the column doesn't adjust as much as some others do. The boost is quite transparent, though I wonder if the term will have to change since the "power" in the power steering is now in the column instead of the rack or steering box.

I hope that Saturn hasn't put any restrictions upon what you can or cannot say (within reason). I do think that Saturn will have absolutely no difficulty selling the scheduled production. This vehicle is reasonably priced and quite roomy.
  • crj1crj1 Member Posts: 70
To me the steering feels very direct, good feedback and no play. As far as acceleration compared to my Bravada it is a little slower, but the Bravada. Trailblazer, Envoy will do 0 to 60 in about 7.7 seconds according to several magazine tests and I would agree with that. We had a 2002 Escalade over the summer and that thing was fast!

The 5 speed automatic trans. in the VUE works very well with the engine.

For those who might find this of interest, the following is an interior dimensions comparison to the year 2000 Jeep Cherokee Classic Sport utility four door. The Jeep dimensions were taken from Kelly Blue Book and the VUE dimensions from a Saturn VUE pamphlet using the AWD V6 vehicle.

    Dimension (in inches) Jeep VUE
    Headroom-front 37.7 40.4
    Headroom-rear 38.0 39.9
    Leg room-front 41.4 41.2
    Leg room-rear 35.0 36.4
    Shoulder room-front 54.7 55.4
    Shoulder room-rear 54.7 55.4

    Also
    Wheelbase 101.4 106.6
    Overall Length 167.4 181.3
    Width 69.4 71.5
    Height 66.8 66.5
    Curb Weight lbs 3353 3470
    Tires Wheel size P225/70R16 P235/65R16

The word processing on this site is not to latest standards:
To read my earlier message properly, it should read for instance:
Headroom Front JEEP 37.7 inches, and VUE 40.4 inches
  • dindakdindak Member Posts: 6,632
Thanx for the posts. I think Saturn has dragged out the introduction of this vehicle so long that everyone is starved for any little bit of information. Unfortunately we all have to wait at least another month or two.
  • keninplacitaskeninplacitas Member Posts: 120
carnut444, I like your idea of direct, clear comparisons. Jeep Liberty has been one of the options I've been researching so, if you don't mind, I'll expand on your table to include the Lib:

Dimensions (in.): Cherokee ... Liberty ... VUE
    Headroom-front - 37.7 ... 40.7 ... 40.4
    Headroom-rear - 38.0 ... 42.1 ... 39.9
    Leg room-front - 41.4 ... 40.8 ... 41.2
    Leg room-rear - 35.0 ... 37.2 ... 36.4
    Shoulder room-front - 54.7 ... 56.5 ... 55.4
    Shoulder room-rear - 54.7 ... 56.5 ... 55.4

    Also:
    Wheelbase - 101.4 ... 104.3 ... 106.6
    Overall Length - 167.4 ... 174.4 ... 181.3
    Width - 69.4 ... 71.6 ... 71.5
    Height - 66.8 ... 70.9 ... 66.5
    Curb Weight lbs - 3353 ... 4070 ... 3470
    Tires Wheel size - P225/70R16 ... P235/70R16 ... P235/65R16

One other point, I looked at the horsepower to weight ratio between the Liberty and the VUE and found them to be nearly identical (torque to weight ratio too). From my perception, that means I can drive a Liberty now and get a feeling for how responsive the VUE will be on the road.

So IMHO, additional key factors to consider will be: towing capability (Lib wins), gas mileage (VUE wins), perceived quality (the jury's out), usability of interior space (VUE wins), exterior looks (VUE wins), interior looks (Liberty wins), spare tire usability (Liberty wins - full size), spare tire storage (VUE wins - out of the way), price (VUE wins), environmental friendliness (VUE wins), and finally, off road capability (Liberty wins - low range gears, etc.).
  • varmitvarmit Member Posts: 1,125
Kenninplacitas - You're on the right track. HP to weight and torque to weight are much better measures than just HP and torque alone. However, you also need to take into account gearing, which is just as important (if not more) than HP.

If you really want to get into it, you'd recognize that different trannies will also be more or less effective at getting power to the wheels. Most range between 15-20% but the more complicated the tranny, the most chances there are for losses due to friction. Then, if the power gets to the wheels, you have to take the size and quality of the wheels into effect (but I'm getting really anal now). :-)

I just picked up the new brochures (one covering all models, including VUE) and the short (pretty much useless) one covering only the VUE.

The brochure covering all models only lists fabrics for seat coverings. I have heard elsewhere, and I thought an earlier post on here noted it, that leather was to be available.

Is this an option that will be added on later?

I love both the new CR-V and VUE, but the CR-V will not have leather....thus, I won't be buying that one. Does anyone know if leather is a definite option when they come out in Dec?

The Saturn dealership here (Roswell, GA) said they will have one in the showroom mid Nov. and they will be for sale and on the lot mid. Dec.
  • dindakdindak Member Posts: 6,632
I was told December 10-12th for the first shipment, but we often get things a little later up here north of the 49th.
  • cayennered1cayennered1 Member Posts: 193
Vehicle tested by C&D last month was shown with leather interior. I would assume that it is an option.
  • afk_xafk_x Member Posts: 393
Leather will not be available for the first model year.

However if you have a good retailer they can put in a custom leather interior. We do them all the time...

Is there any specific part of the VUE that anybody would like me to report on for them? I will be seeing the VUE at the Tampa Bay Auto Show this weekend, and would be happy to help answer any questions any of you may have concerning the vehicle.

On a similar note, I spoke with a sales representative of Saturn of Brandon this week, and he told me that they are expecting 5 VUES in three weeks. I hope this is the case since my lease is due at the beginning of December and I need a replacement vehicle ASAP.

I will let you all know what I find out about the VUE this weekend.

If you can, play with the switches and knobs on the dash and let me know how they feel in terms of quality. Also, find out if you can how the rear seat room is. I have heard it's a bit tight.

    Thanx for the offer!

I'm in the market for a new 'small SUV' and so far I've test driven the Tribute, Escape, Santa Fe, Rav4, X-Terra, and CRV. As I was not completely happy with any of those vehicles, and as am intrigued by the look and features of the Vue, I figured I could hold out for a bit longer.

I read the posting re: retailers having the option to sell the Vue at GMO/GMS pricing which would the V6 much more accessible for me. But, when I talked to the manager of my local dealership, he said he hadn't heard anything about it so I'm wondering if that's a US only thing or if I'm just dealing with the wrong dealership. Also, if anyone has an idea on whether Saturn will offer a 0.9% financing option, I'd be happy to know.

PS. I found an decent (although slow) video link showing the Vue in motion plus interior details if anyone is interested:

It was very nice to actually have a chance to see and poke around inside the VUE at the Tampa Bay Auto Show this weekend.

They had two models there with what seemed to be the same options. One model was the black silver color, and the other was just silver. The black silver was very nice since the body of the vehicle matched some of the black cladding on the lower portion of the SUV.

The upholstery was a little cheaper than the regular clothe seats in the Trailblazer LS, but that was not a big surprise. My girlfriend noted that fabric reminded her of the 98 Pathfinder we used to drive. Despite the material, the seats seemed firm and supportive. The front legroom and headroom were great. The rear seats had enough space for me (I am 6’), and felt comfortable enough for a longer drive. I could see where you would think they sit a little high, but I did not find this to be a problem.

The dashboard and the center stereo area seemed pretty tight. This area does not seem to have the gap and cheap plastic problems I have in my 99 GMC Jimmy. I liked the layout of the stereo and the automatic shifter (although the shift button seemed sort of odd). It is an intelligent design that allows for quite a bit of space to put things between the two front seats. I like the idea of separate arm rests for the two front seats since I am often stealing arm space away from my co-pilot. The steering wheel was a disappointment. They definitely need to make a leather wrap option available for the steering wheel for better feel.

The rear compartment was large enough, but the floor paneling was awkward and loose. The storage area organizer felt like it was cheap plastic from an old GI Joe toy. It seemed like an option that I wouldn’t have missed if it were left out. A sturdy cargo net would do the same trick as the organizer, and would have looked quite a bit better. Getting to the spare under the organizer was a little difficult also since I felt like I was going to break the floor panel when attempting to lift it to get at the tire.

I would write more, but this is getting a bit wordy. If you have anything specific then let me know and I would be glad to reply. I am not an expert on this vehicle, but I know that not many people have had the opportunity to even sit in the truck. My review may sound bad, but the vehicle was actually quite impressive considering what I expected. The exterior and price will definitely win over a lot of people. I need to drive one to make a final decision on whether to deposit my cash on a VUE or go for a Trailblazer LS instead.

    -M

    P.S.
The salesperson working the exhibit told me that GMS would not be available on the VUE until January. I am going to call around to other dealers in the area to see what the say about it. The reasons he gave me for not having GMS available did not make much sense. Not going to go in to it unless somebody would like me to explain.
  • diploiddiploid Member Posts: 2,286
Not wordy at all. Very informative, thanks.

shellymeister noted that the rear seats sat a little too close to the floor. What is your take on that? I've seen this vehicle in real life at the auto show, and unlike you, we were not allowed to probe the interior. It looked almost as big as my old Blazer.
  • dindakdindak Member Posts: 6,632
Ramble on all you want. I think most of us have not seen the inside of a Vue yet so we really do want to know what people think. Sounds like it's going to be a good bang for the buck which is really what most people are looking for.
  • regfootballregfootball Member Posts: 2,166
back seats in North American GM cars are always low. So that's certainly not a surprise. Could you compare the usable, interior space of the Vue to the Escape, Santa Fe, and maybe a typical sedan?
  • dindakdindak Member Posts: 6,632
Not necessarily true. The back seats in my Intrigue are higher than the front.
  • acurahadacurahad Member Posts: 29
I crawled all over the awd v-6 Gold VUE.Actually I really liked the room and layout of the Vue. They said, they would be getting another Vue in about a week, that can be driven. If the Vue drives right & with little wind noise & the price is right, I will plan on purchasing one. Front seats were height adjustable. This Vue still was owned by Saturn, basically a pre-startup car. Personally I liked the car, but will wait until I can drive the real thing.
  • haiduchaiduc Member Posts: 5
I went to the Seattle Auto Show last weekend and took a long hard look at the VUE. Sat in and tested all the switches and knobs. Here is my first impression:

    - Cheaper interior plastic than most small SUVs. Same goes for the fabric. At least it doesn't look and feel tacky like most GM products.
    - Nice interior layout and lotsa headroom & legroom.
    - Front passenger seat folds flat.
    - Seats are low, I'm only 5'8'' but once I opened the door I actually had to "sit down" instead of climbing up like other SUVs. Dig that.
    - Nice instrument, not outstanding, but nice.
    - OK tactile feel for switches and knobs.
    - Looks different than most SUVs and perhaps this could be a strong selling point.

It was a nice overall package, now I only need to testdrive both the CVT and V6/Auto to see if the price justifies the gain in horsepower. Can't wait.
  • regfootballregfootball Member Posts: 2,166
true, but I meant in camparison to other makes. GM until recently was living in the Ozzie and Harriet world and thought all backseat dwellers are 12 y.o. and 4'-6".

A backseat ride in my father in laws '98 88 is a painful affair for this 6 footer. I have to splay my legs terribly to the side and the seats are so unsupportive......my brother in laws Bonneville SSE is a little better. My dad's Seville SLS is decent. But overall not as comfy as other makes.

You sit low in an Intrepid, but at least you've got leg room in those LH cars, unlike the new Bonne and Aurora. My Taurus is way more comfy in the backseat than those cars.
  • dindakdindak Member Posts: 6,632
regfootball : Perhaps things are getting better with the newer models. I never sit in the back so I don't pay a lot of attention to it. The only reason I noticed it in the Intrigue is because people commented on how nice and high up they sat and how good the log room was. I sat in the back seat of my buddies Acura 3.2TL and it was a nightmare. Bigger car than my Intrigue too!

haiduc : I think the V6 will be the choice motor, but the CVT L4 is what I will likely get to save money on purchase price and gas. It will also be a good feature for showing off to friends and family. ;-)

Hey guys, just wanted to let you know I have spent some time behind the wheel of a V6 AWD Vue with the sunroof. My buddy had one from GM, and he let me drive it on and off road. I own a new Jetta, so I am spoiled by nice interiors and good power/ handling. I was HUGELY impressed with the VUE! We took it on an off-ramp, and it handled better that some SPORTS SEDANS on the curve! This thing handles almost as good as the Jetta! The interior plastics had a nice grain to them, and the seating position is nice and high. There is a cool view out, because the windshield actually bends back over your head a bit. The V6 with the auto makes this vehicle move well. Don't be fooled by the Horsepower numbers, because this is a light vehicle. I was told it beat a V6 Escape off-the-line. The sunroof is HUGE, almost like a Toyota Avalon. I was impressed, and I DONT like SUV's. I am NOT partial to American vehicles, as I like European. If I was looking for a small SUV, I would RUN to the Saturn dealer for my VUE!
  • regfootballregfootball Member Posts: 2,166
sounds encouraging! How was the rear cargo space?

Right now I am shopping for a mid sized sedan but I must admit I am intrigued by the VUE. I usually like Ford products so I thought when the Escape came out I thought I'd like it, but its too trucky for me.

I was hoping the Vue would be more car like and less trucky and really just be a "tall sedan" kind of vehicle. I really like the simplicity and utility of the L series car but I think in some instances I would like a slightly larger version of it.

So if the VUe is that kind of wehicle I may very well like it.

    What color did you drive?
  • dindakdindak Member Posts: 6,632
regfootball : Love the Escape, but I'm still a bit worried about LT reliability given the number of recalls. I test drove a V6 and loved it. That said, the Vue seems more intriguing to me.

carman30 : Your comments are very encouraging. I am very eager to drive one myself. Anyone tried a 4 cyl model yet?
  • nextmoonnextmoon Member Posts: 386
If it's possible, some pictures of the exterior and interior would be greatly appreciated.
  • carman30carman30 Member Posts: 10
I drove a silver one, and our buddy from Saturn had a gold one parked next to ours. The rear cargo room is nice. The Passenger's seatback can fold forward and be flat so you can put a ladder in there. It is fun to sit in the back seat with the passenger's seat down because it is like haning a footrest. The back of the seat has a plastic surface so you don't mess up the fabric. This is the only small SUV I know of that has this feature. Also, the VUE comes with a cool cargo organiser that you can put stuff in. On the sides, it also has hard pockets that can hold milk jugs!

I forgot..The Fog light are really bright and light up the road well!
  • varmitvarmit Member Posts: 1,125
That "foot rest" can actually come in handy for a number of reasons. I have something similar in my CR-V, though in the CR-V it is intended to convert into a bed and uses the padded side rather than a hard plastic.

    http://osx.wieck.com/pv/HON/2001/09/01/HON2001090149801_pv.jpg

As a foot rest, it was helpful when my sister had surgury on her knee. She needed lots of legroom and we put her in back with the passenger seat flatened. It's also a big help if you need to carry long planks, moldings, or pipes. I've fit lengths up to 10 ft. in my CR-V. I'm sure that the Vue's design will offer similar benefits.

  • wristshot19wristshot19 Member Posts: 10
I would have to agree with the previous posts that the VUE has plenty of usable space. The only thing I noticed about the front folding seat is that the headrest rubbed against the dashboard, and kind of got stuck down when the headrest got caught on a small lip on the passenger side dashboard area. You will just have to make sure that the headrest is completely down to avoid rubbing it on the dash area.

I looked through the Ford Escape at a dealer three or four months ago, but I do not remember how functional its cargo space was, so I can not give an accurate comparison of the two vehicles at this time. I will have to stop by a Ford dealer and check the vehicle out again to see how it compares to the VUE while the Saturn is still fresh in my mind.
  • dindakdindak Member Posts: 6,632
Just got an invite from the local Honda to attend the unveiling of the new CR-V on Nov. 27. They will have free food, gifts and test drives. Got to like it!!

Hope Saturn does the same in December.

Is the Vue's steering wheel lined up with the drivers position or is it off centered to the right? After sitting in the Vue again, the steering wheel felt to be off centered to the right. When looking at pictures of the steering wheel position and comparing it to the placement of the front seat, it seems to sit to the right of the seat. The pictures were in kbb.com showing a shot from behind the seat.Could anyone testing the Vue, comment on the position? Maybe I was not use to the position, but I would like to verify if the steering wheel is centered or offset from the seat.

One is supposed to use HEADLAMPS for "lighting up the road". Fog lamps are for fog conditions to create better visibility but are used by most drivers to irritate uncoming drivers or simply just to say:
"I have foglights, can you see them?"..
  • dindakdindak Member Posts: 6,632
You really need to add that "Power Package" unless you want a stripper. Basically you are looking at U$18625 for a well equipped Saturn with a CVT auto transmission. It's not bad but some of the stuff in the power group like power locks should be standard.

Is pricing out for a the 02 CR-V yet?
  • carnut444carnut444 Member Posts: 27
Steering wheels are often off center. I don't know why this but hopefully we may hear from some vehicle design people on this. My question is: why are you concerned about this?
  • acurahadacurahad Member Posts: 29
I really do not like to sit and drive sideways, myself.
