The new ones have a slightly smaller mouth though. If I had a choice I'd have the current Tahoe/Suburban front end.
  • fanofgmfanofgm Member Posts: 12
isn't that bad and IMO i think the new Chevy front end is sharp and those new taillights even better. The Tahoe/Suburban front end is ok but it looks old when you compare it to the new ones, it has been around since 99 when the new Sierra and Silverado came out. When are they suppose to completely redesign these trucks anyways?

From what I've heard MY 2006 for the SUV's and 2007 for the trucks.

The looks of my '03 Chevy are just ok. I too prefer the looks of my '02 Tahoe. Certain '03 chevys look better than others, depends on color combo/trim. I would have prefered the GMC over the Chevy as well. Actually I probably would have bought something else, lol, but I got the truck nearly new from a guy that had to sell ASAP and took my rediculous offer. Eight years on the same chassis is too long to stay competitive these days.

i must agree Eight years on the same chassis is too long to stay competitive these days. And yes Certain 03 chevys look better than others, depends on color combo/trim. However since I haven't had a REAL problem with any of my vehicles since my 1992 C1500 Silverado and the dealership was very good about fixing everything i have never thought about going to Ford, Dodge or even... well we all know the other company. Anyways thanks for the info about the bodystyle change.

They change the sheet metal far more often. The glorious styling of my '01 HD was changed to the Avalanche after a stellar 2 year run, where now you can't tell them apart from the 1/2 tons. Ford always kept separate identities...

I hate to see work trucks designed around chasing styling fads. One of the reasons trucks maintained resale value was that they did not fall victim to the styling traps. Buyers could depend on a consistent look, and consistent quality. Every time they come up with something all new, they start over with whole new set of problems, updates and fixes that takes years before they get the quality back. The current models of GM trucks are said to be the most reliable as they've worked out the kinks. Going back to when I bought my '99, the year of the re-design, new 5.3 engine, new hydroformed chassis, new cab, sheet metal, interior, and TONs of glitches, kinks, and initial quality items.

I noticed on my Silverado's chrome rear bumper that at the top edge of the plastic foot pad on either side of the license plate that it appears to have some rust spots. Can this plastic trim be removed to access that area, and replaced?
  • p100p100 Member Posts: 1,116
Rust on one year old truck bumper is unacceptable. Take it to the dealer and demand bumper replacement.

I have a 9 year old Nissan pickup with chrome factory rear bumper, still rust free. I too have rubber pads on top of the bumper. I work 200ft away from the beach in Central Florida, which has one of the most corrosive environments in the world.
  • fanofgmfanofgm Member Posts: 12
Yes I would take it to the dealer. Wow, are you sure that's the original bumper, that is quite impressive however something like a rust free bumper even after 9 years would never make me do something as insane as buy a Full Size Nissan Truck.
  • obyoneobyone Member Posts: 7,841
My '91 Nissan truck has had rust on the rear bumper under the pads since the first year. Have to remove and grind the rust and repaint every other year.

The silverado has been known for the rusting bumpers since model year 2000. It's nothing new. Take it back to the dealer. They will replace it under warranty.

I was hoping that was the case. My '03 with 6500 miles already has rust forming in spots. Looks like crap for such a new vehicle.

Has anyone had experience with traction control on a 2wd Silverado/Sierra? Does it work in winter weather? Is the light rear on a pickup too much for traction control to tame in snow? (It works pretty well on a sedan.)

I am looking for a set of 2004 16 in. Aluminum rims (stock). Preferrably with very low miles (good condition). I was hoping to trade a set of westin nerf bars (these are brand new black and for an ext cab with 4 doors) for a set of rims possibly. If you have a set of these rims and are looking for nerf bars let me know!
  • white6white6 Member Posts: 588
Purchased a 2004 Silverado Ext cab LS yesterday. Black with tan cloth, light duty power package (5.3, locker, trailer package), alum wheels, 255 tires, tint, steering wheel controls, power folding mirrors. MSRP of $28,910; after $4,000 owner loyalty rebate, $2,000 GM Mastercard rebate, $500 bonus rebate (at dealer's discretion) and dealer discount, final price was $19,000! Amazing. Plus, I'm supposed to fax a copy of my P&L to the dealer to qualify for a $500 Lowe's certificate!

Ryanbab... those rims are all over E-bay.......

Most likely it's the autotrac switch pod. There's a TSB on it, at least for my Y2K.
  • minikinminikin Member Posts: 389
Yes, the 200 models had terrible piston slap and extremely nasty, very bad wear problems. But after 1803 years of continuous design and quality control efforts it appears GM has finally corrected the problem. It should no longer be an issue with the current model year trucks.
  • minikinminikin Member Posts: 389
no, not at all. just crank up the bars until you get what you need. some folk will tell you to get an alignment afterward. not a bad idea, but not really necessary for one or two rounds.

Hi to all! Pretty much been off this board for the last couple of years. But, want to thank you all for the advice and help that has set me up for, so far, four mostly worry free years with my 5.3L Y2K ext cab Silverado short bed 4x4.

Z-71, Indigo Blue w/black accents, looks a lot like Ryan's, but with all the logos stripped off. Edelbrock shocks, 265X16 Mich A/Ts, OTR Line-X, Access cover, Hypertech programmer. Only 25K miles to date, but this has been our reliable winter weather beater (live in Denver), home remodeling stuff hauler, and family (me, wife, couple of dog children) vacation transport that has taken us from Denver to northern Maine, Rhode Island, Pennsylvania, Virginia, DC, W.VA. Kentucky, and a whole hell of a lot of points in between.

Yep, I've had a bit of piston slap when cold and the steering column rattle problem and few other things. If it hadn't been for this board I'd have probably worried myself to death and sold the truck. That would have been a serious mistake!

Overall, this thing has been ultrareliable. It works great and sometime within the next couple of weeks I'm going to substitute an A.R.E. cap for the Access cover which should make it even more versitile for us. I fully intend to continue enjoying this truck until we totally wear it out or until I'm dead; whichever comes first.

Glad to hear that you have enjoyed your vehicle so much. I have had the same steering column problem on my 02 ext cab Sierra (24,000 miles). Originally the dealer just relubricated the shaft and all the points on the steering system as well as making sure all of the connections and bolts were tight. It went away for about 3 months but returned. I brought the vehicle back and they replaced the column with a new one and I have had no problems with the steeing since. I love this truck....super reliable, and a blast to drive. I haven't had the time or cash flow to do any upgrades to the truck. My wife is due 2 days ago.....so I have been a little preoccupied.

I had an Access cover on my Dakota (traded for 04 Silverado last weekend) and really liked it. I was considering buying one for the new truck; if you are replacing yours, I might be interested in taking the Access cover "off your hands." If you're interested, contact me directly (my e-mail is in my profile).

check with a local company doing conversions on pickups - i used to work for a place that did conversions vans, but also did some pickups. they would always put the fancy rims on the trucks that they did and had a pile of stock tires/wheels sittings around that they would sell pretty cheap. got some rims for my dads old ram that way...

I'm going to a swap meet in Wisconsin this weekend (7/9), usually some guys from Indiana or Ohio that sell new take-offs. I can get their contact info for you if you'd like. Just looking for rims or complete with tires?
  • ricschricsch Member Posts: 540
I had a '01 Silverado with the traction control. Worked fairly well. If your just running on wet roads it's fine-if you're in an area with snow,it may be another story. I have since went back to a 4wd Silverado as I pull a enclosed snowmobile trailer and at times get into unplowed areas and a 2wd just won't get me through.

Thanks man I would appreciate that. I am looking for the alum rims (04 style a little different than the 99-02). I only want the rims.

Get their info or give them my email

    Ryanb0928@yahoo.com

    Thanks again!!!

Thanks for the answer. I don't expect to take a 2wd truck where a 4wd would go - I just wonder if it tames snowy suburban streets. Did it do any good on light snow over pavement? I would like to go 2wd and manage to get through the few snowy days of Kansas City winters.

Glad to hear your truck is still doing fine. Mine is doing good as well. Still got the mod bug? I know I do.. hehe

Traction control worked well for me on snow-covered streets, along with driving according to conditions. Should be fine for your situation.
  • ricschricsch Member Posts: 540
Your looking for the new-style Z-71 rims? I'll see if anyone has them and get you the info.
  • txyank1txyank1 Member Posts: 1,010
FWIW If you don't find any at a suitable price I have some '03 Avalanche 16"ers I'd let go cheap. (I think they're the same as '04s) I don't however have any need for the nerf bars.

I have a 1999 Silverado 1500 4x4 with 42K. Recently had ABS light turn on and a loud modular buzz which continued with pickup off. Had dealer take a look and they said its the ABS module that needs to be replaced. Labor and parts 7-800. Dealer said they have seen many of these recently - any advice, service bulletins, recalls? Appreciate any help.
