Going with the larger four-cylinder engine in the Mazda 3 means slightly decreased mileage, but the performance payoff is worth it.

It would be nice if there was a somewhat controlled test loop you would do for a baseline mpg. That way we'd know how much was enthusiastic driving and how much was unreasonable epa ratings.
Not bad. My 2007 Mazdaspeed 3 with a Hypertech tune pulls down over 30 if I keep it under 75 on the interstate. It has averaged @27 mpg over the seven years and 136k miles I've owned it. I'm more than happy with the fuel economy considering its current power output.
That said, I'm hoping a Mazdaspeed version of the current 3 is in the pipeline; I really like the current 3, it just needs about 150 more hp...

After six weeks and over 1,000 miles my wife's 2.5 2015 hatchback is averaging 32.2 mpg. This is mixed driving. Obviously better on the highway and less in town. The only trip we took was some Interstate then some winding roads with hills. On that jaunt we were almost 35 mpg.
