2000 Chevy Blazer is making a grinding noise

My 2000 blazer is making a grinding noise when put into park and reverse. It doesn't do it everytime but sounds like starter is engaging. It also started itself when the key was turned one click forward. Changed the starter but no change. Also started it the other morning and all sounded good. When went out to vehicle 5 minutes later the noise was there along with a hot metal smell. Any ideas?

    I have a 2000 ZR2 Blazer that the starter engages randomly when parked in the rain or in or after going through the car wash.

    I had a 1997 Blazer that all I had to do was put it into Reverse and it would start only had this issue when the engine was warm (driven for a while) I took it to the dealer it took them a while to find the problem it was the netural saftey mounted on the outside of the transmission and it fixed the problem its about a $40.00 part.
