    Well so far this is nowhere near the EPA ratings

    That's strange because my personal best mileage on the highway in my 2014 Rogue SL AWD has been 32.7. And, that was on really hilly highway through mountains in upstate NY. So, I know I can do better than that. Had it on cruise ranging from 65 to 70 with A/C on. Once you get into the city, of course, that average will drop. But, I know that the Rogue can definitely match - and beat - it's EPA highway estimate.

    my average fuel economy is never over 22.1 even on road trips

    Secret is to accelerate slowly and not break unnecessarily but roll and let it slow down naturally. 
    My best on 2015 AWD SL is 31.7, avg 26.2
