That if you want Nav, you are getting the whole nine-yards. The Nav is considered their top-o-line RX, and they usually come with everything (except two hitch and factory chromes).

Good luck and let us know how it goes.

It was a gray cloth- To tell you the truth, I didn't really notice what options it had. It just caught my eye because I hadn't seen cloth before. It was at Scottsdale Lexus.
  • jlschmidtjlschmidt Member Posts: 5
I have seen several RX300's with Cloth Interior. It was always in the cream color. This was at Lexus of Brookfield in Wis. (suburb of Milwaukee). Don't know if they had 6-CD player option , but for sure never seen it with NAV.

Anyone know any official info on this for the RX300? They already changed a lot from 2000 to 2001, but interested in 2002 info, officially, if any. Thank you.

I'm in the process of changing my Bridgestone tires to Michelin LTX/MS on the 2000 RX, but wanting to go to a wider size (255/65/16 as 225/70/16), using current rims. Is this possible, will I need spacers? Any experiences out there.

    Thanks
  • tonychrystonychrys Member Posts: 1,310
I've talked to pro's about this, for a 255 width you'll need spacers on the rear so that the tires won't hit the strut assembly.

I calculated out the size you chose and you'll come in at 29.05" for the overall diameter, with the stock tires being at 28.40". Technically, this is within +/-3% that you really shouldn't deviate from so that you don't screw up your odo, vehicle systems, nav, etc.

I'm not sure whether that width will mount on the stock rims, but your tire guy should know.

    Hope this helps,
    TC

Please keep us posted on your tire situation. I have seen a RX with 235/70 16 Michelins and they looked like a more appropriate size than the stock ones. They did clear the rear strut-barely.

I was also told by www.tirerack.com that they don't recommend changing the size on the RX.

The 255/65-16's would show a speedo reading 2.28% too slow
The 235/70-16's would show a reading 1.94% too slow

Some RX owners here have claimed there is a low-frequency vibration problem they are experiencing, and that the dealer can't figure it out.

Well, while doing some technical research on another issue, I came across this:

"Canceling Vibration: The ES 300 sedan and RX 300 sport-utility both feature an active engine mount that helps keep even the smallest vibrations from reaching the passenger compartment. A solenoid-controlled diaphragm produces pulses equal-but-opposite to those of the engine, canceling out vibration with every power stroke."

Active cancellation technology is one area I am very familar with. If this unit in the RX was slightly out of phase with it's normal operation, that would produce a "beat frequency" that might simulate a low frequency vibration. I suggest raising this point with a lead tech.

    Hope this helps,

i plan on keeping my rx for many years and live in detroit... should i consider having my
rx rustproofed? , such as ziebart rustproofing?
or would this be a waste of money?

the husky liners that tony has recommended are
    just excellent!!!

Tony, I checked with two dealers and have heard back from one.

He said that they occasionally get cloth RX's in. He stated that I could in theory get the RX the way I want it but I couldn't order it. He believed that the Nav could be added by the dealer. (I wonder about this) Oh well, I will accept leather and a roof though I hate paying for something that I don't really want and won't use that often.

I have leather and sunroof in my 94 ES300. The leather has been ok but I hardly ever use the sunroof. As far as resale value is concerned, I don't care about this because I keep the cars I buy for a long time. I wouldn't be trading my ES nor would I plan to trade my RX. I guess I don't have a choice but to accept the leather and roof.

I will let you know what the second dealer tells me when he gets back to me.

Oh yeah, have you decided to buy an extended warranty? If so, are you shopping several Lexus/Toyota dealers? Just curious...

Stopped by a dealer yesterday who actually had 4 units with cloth(!)...
... none with options. When asked, a salesman said the NAV must be ordered with leather etc... was next door to the Toyota dealer, so I compared the Highlander's cloth with the RX...
almost identical, I thought the Toyota's was better-looking. Neither were that attractive, seemed out-of-place on the RX, but maybe I'm just used to the leather...
  • tonychrystonychrys Member Posts: 1,310
I meant to say earlier that I checked with my dealer and he said the same thing as the one you spoke to, basically, almost any car can be ordered as long as it falls within a certain "configuration". And coming from Japan, a 6 - 8 week wait is a minimum usually.

Yea, I'm suspect about the dealer adding the Lexus Nav unit after the fact also. I'd get it in writing with a firm price.

good luck finding the options you want without a ton of other options.....it's true with Lexus, Toyota, and everything else out there. Try to find a Tahoe w/leather that doesn't have 2k in dubious options you could care less about. In theory Lexus makes a RX300 for 31k, but I've never seen one that listed for less than 39K. They all have fancy headlights (for $500+), a moonroof and leather. As long as their cars are in demand you'll get what they offer and like it. When the time comes you don't care anymore, you'll be able to get one any way you want. Bet you a dollar you can find an Oldsmobile dressed or undressed anyway you want. It's the free market and Lexus essentially makes the base price of this car in the high 30's and you're gonna have to work your butt off to find one otherwise.
  • jjinseattlejjinseattle Member Posts: 1
I was checking out the prices at the CarsDirect.com website trying different zip codes. In the Seattle area, the Cars Direct prices are only few hundred off MSRP.

But when I tried my friend's ZIP in the LA area (90275), the Cars Direct price is the same as the invoice price!

Is the market really that low in LA, or is there a glitch in their software?
  • tonychrystonychrys Member Posts: 1,310
Wow, you got my attention with this, I did a little experimenting.

It seems you only get the "invoice=selling price" if you select a base model and options. If you select a Nav model you get about $800 over invoice, which is still a great price.

Whether it is a glitch or not, if I was in the market for an RX and lived within a couple of hundred miles, I'd be placing an order on Carsdirect and making them stick to the published price.

Anyone out there care to try?

As the new owner of a Lexus RX300, I have to say that I love my car and I hope to keep it in great shape. I've been keeping an eye on this forum and I have found it to be very helpful. Everyone who has contributed, with the exception of one idiot and we ALL know who that is, has been very generous with their input. A big thank you to all you guys and gals. Now my question. I'm interested in products to care for the exterior- paint, black plastic trim pieces, weather striping, and headlight lenses. Plus products for the interior - leather upholstery, vinyl upholstery and other vinyl surfaces, dash and door panels. Sorry for long question, but I'd really like to purchase the best products for my RX300. Thanks so much for your input. PS What is the best way to clean the glass surfaces?

    Is "spakchar" related to "gtmustang"?

Very similar tenor to their posts.
  • detectivedetective Member Posts: 10
You know spakchar, you must be an idiot to make the statement that you feel like you're driving a convertible RX because you have your sunroof open.

Extended warranties are beneficial for people that keep vehicles for extended periods of time regardless of the make. As I stated before, I own a 94 ES with more than 100K miles on it. I'm glad that I bought an extended warranty for it since it has saved me a few thousand dollars in repair costs.

As for me inquiring about cloth seating, It's my prerogative to check out any option that I want and buy any car that I want. If I wanted a Hyundai,Isuzu or Durango, I would be on those boards talking to more idiots like you.

Having waxed many a cars in my life, I'm about to take the "Zaino" plunge once it gets warmer out. For further info about this mircale product click here.

For leather care, you want to get a product called Lexol. They make both a cleaner and conditioner, available at most car stores and online at www.carcareonline.com

Just wanted to stop by and tell let you know that I am not surprised by more negative comments directed to those who own Hyundai Santa Fes. It just confirms my beliefs that most of those who post these messages, especially on a regular basis, have some sort of ego fufilling superiority complex. I might be an "idiot", but I can only pity those who have to work or live with some of you.
  • malhokcmalhokc Member Posts: 83
Leather treatment: I've used Lexol for about 1 year--Great Product!!

Wider Tires follow up: I took in to NTB to see if Michelin LTX/MS 255/65/16 would fit on the original 16" rim. Guess what, it did! The RX looked great; a little higher, wider, and more muscular. However, because I have the front brush guard, the tires did rub against the metal of these gurards on sharp corners. I had to go back to the originals. For those of you who don't have these metal guards, I think it should work fine. No need for the spacers. There is approx 1/2" (front) and 1/4" (back) clearance from the struts. If you decide to get them replaced, don't forget to replace the spare also if you have an AWD. Being an all time four wheel drive, the diameter for all tires must be the same. There is approx 0.7" difference between the two. Also regarding the spare, even though it will fit in the back of the trunk, the cover will not close properly. You may need a velcro, or some other means. It shouldn't rattle, since it is carpeted. It was 2hrs well spent.

Please know that whenever I see an RX300 in the future I will be wondering if it is one of the posters here who refers to me as an idiot. Your God like attitude will be remembered. When I see you I will bow to the east and chant "Lexus owners be praised" three times. I'm sure that will feed into your narcissism nicely.
  • tonychrystonychrys Member Posts: 1,310
Let's ask a few basic questions:

    a) Do you see any of us posting in the Hyundai Owners board like you just did here? Just remember, turnabout is fair play. Remember your wonderful Hyundai owner GTMustang?

    b) Most of us are happy with our vehicle purchases and feel no need to defend them like they were living beings that needed our help. Why is it that Hyundai owners must rally to the cause? Are you on Hyundai's payroll? Own stock in the company? Does your vehicle purchase define who you are? Just curious....

    c) Last time I checked, there were no personal slanders directed towards any one individual which would violate Edmund's rules. There was a heated exchange between two potential Lexus owners. Are you guys the thought police and it's your job to regulate every conversation???

    d) There's an old saying, "If the shoe fits, wear it."

    Have a great day!

Here I was, all excited about these nice folks "bowing to the east and chanting 'Lexus owners be praised' three times.

Just the vision of tens of dozens of Santa Fee owners bowing (like those little plastic NFL statues with helmets on the dashboard) while they drive, no doubt make possible by all their extra space without those troublesome side airbags, was so exciting that I almost spilled my Starbucks latte this morning...

And you had to go defend us with clam reasoning and logic. Please stop immediately; you know that has no place on these boards!
  • tonychrystonychrys Member Posts: 1,310
Know what's great for cleaning that latte off your seats? Lexol!

I get paid a dime everytime I mention their name.

    Lexol lexol lexol lexol lexol!

Cha-ching! Now I have enough money to buy more wood pieces for my vehicle interior.

    Life is good!

I apologize to all of your Hyundai, Isuzu or Durango owners. My "idiot" comment was directed to spakchar. It was not intended to offend anyone but him. I haven't made any comments about your vehicles. If you're happy with them, I'm happy for you.

I am curious as to why you find it necessary to come to this board and defend your rides.

Again, I apologize for offending those whom were offended.

The highlander has a lower clearance 7.3 vs 8 for the RX and a slighly longer wheelbase...All other things being equal is the highlander more stable and less likely to be in a roll over..?...I test drove the highlander with VSC and the ride is not as comfortable as the RX...Also, is the trac control and VSC the same in both...Thanx for any enlightenment..Rod...
  • tonychrystonychrys Member Posts: 1,310
Clearance/rollover: There isn't necessarily any direct correlation between clearance and likelyhood to rollover. Example: The MB ML320 has a ground clearnace of 8.4", yet it is a very stable vehicle because the center of gravity is closer to the ground rather than the top of the vehicle. Now with regards to the RX, I'm not sure of where the center of gravity is, but my point is that you can't draw conclusions from ground clearance.

VSC and TRACs: TRACs is traction control and used to help keep your wheels from spinning (unecessarily). VSC is a superset of TRACs, ABS, throttle control, and yaw detection. VSC will help to stabilize your vehicle by preventing/correcting front-end swerve and rear-end fishtailing. This also helps prevent "untripped" rollovers. Untripped rollovers are rollovers that happen when the vehicle rolls over without one of the wheels hitting an obstacle (like a curb) or road deformity.

Why do we see Santa Fe owners in the RX forum? Does anyone see RX owners in the Santa Fe forum? I find it funny that Santa Fe owners have to come by this forum once in awhile and defend their vehicle. Shows how much you love your Santa Fe when you come by here. I don't know about the other RX owners but yes, I did buy a Lexus as opposed to a "Santa Fe" or that Mazda Tribute because it is a status symbol. It shows people that you've made it in this world. I don't see anything wrong with that. You really don't get the same looks in a Mazda or Ford etc... as you do with a Lexus. So be it!
  • dognut1dognut1 Member Posts: 11
Detective-Apology accepted. It was not your post that I found most offensive. The most offensive posts have been removed and I do not see them here now.

Tonycrys-A.)Yes, I have seen you post on the S.F. message board. Is the RX300 board like an exclusive country club which denies entry to some?...Gmustang, I believe, does not own a SF and we would probably agree on our opinions of him.
B.) Why rally to the cause? Because I was offended when you called SF owners idiots.
    C.) See B. above
    D.) Ditto back at you--carpe diem :)

I didn't call anyone anything, but merely pointed out that two people on this board were having a heated exchange, primarily about a Lexus configuration, and you and your fellow cult members took it upon yourself to "correct" us.

It seems when confronted with simple logic, everything in your universe seems to break down.

You haven't answered the question everyone is wondering about: why would anyone get upset whether someone said anything about a car or it's owners collectively? You mean to tell me that if the New York Times wrote a review of the Santa Fe and said that anyone who paid MSRP or over is short-sighted financially because of lousy resale value? What would you do, barage the NYTimes with letters? Picket outside their offices?

Ever since GTMustang, I swore I would never stoop to his level and post in the Hyundai discussion board anymore the way he posted here. Why can't you do the same? Or would you prefer that Lexus owners come over and correct all the wrong assumptions about safety, side airbags, break-in procedures, performance, etc, etc, etc.? It could be quite amusing to say the least.

But guess what? I would prefer not to, I have better things to do with my time, hopefully you do too.

    Enjoy your day.

In one of the posts removed from this board today you specifically called SF owners "idiots". Feel free to knock the SF...but don't call us idiots. I am sure if I called all RX owners idiots someone would respond to that as well on the SF board. I will continue to read and post here if I wish. Why do you read the SF board and many others on a regular basis? IMHO you should only read the RX board if you follow your own advise!
  • malhokcmalhokc Member Posts: 83
Can we limit the discussion of this forum to LEXUS only!! It is getting kind of ridiculous reading 5 non-Lexus message for every 1 related topic. Let's be considerate of others.
  • tonychrystonychrys Member Posts: 1,310
"Why do you read the SF board?"

    Because it's amusing!

And you are absolutley right, you are free to post wherever you want. My only sugestion is that you be prepared to debate the facts, use verifiable data, and actually have some insightful comments to contribute.

Happy to see you here. I guess I'll be posting in the Santa Fe board since you'll be here offering us your fascinating insights on various issues. Make sure your fellow members know I'm there with your invitation.

Malhokc - my apologies, I'm trying to be as civil as possible, but sometimes... you know. I'll stop and let whoever wants to have the last word have it, since it seems to make them feel better.
  • losthat1losthat1 Member Posts: 93
Amusing? Not as amusing as reading the superior attitudes of some who post here and how they have "arrived" because they drive an RX! I haven't chosen to knock the RX in any way -- just the egos of some who drive them. Hang loose Tony!
  • cattmanducattmandu Member Posts: 12
I was amazed by the CarsDirect pricing too...
I live in Santa Monica, and have to ask... go to 4 different sites, get 4 different "invoice prices"...my question - is the invoice price quoted on CarsDirect accurate? If so, the price for an L.A. zip is really good... at Christmas time, their price was actually BELOW the quoted invoice price!!

Back to our regularly scheduled programming...

Not many pictures have been released about the impending SilverSport Edition. Here's some that might be helpful, intriguing, etc.

BTW, only the interior shot and the front angle shot are the SilverSport.

Should be in dealer showrooms in April.

When I took delivery of our RX in August of '99, I asked the dealership to take all four wheels off and properly strip the wax remnants from transportation. Ever since, when I wash the wheels, I encounter more of the gooey, sticky and ugly stuff coming down the spokes of the wheels. Does anyone have the same problem or may be even a solution?

I tried (hot) pressure washing, but was afraid of getting too close to the clear coat on the rims.

Help, because the rest of the (black) car now looks awesome again (after Meguiar's wax, drool...).

    Tarik
  • tonychrystonychrys Member Posts: 1,310
"more of the gooey, sticky and ugly stuff coming down the spokes of the wheels. "

I'm assuming you are talking about brake dust (that black sludge that builds up)? If so, this is tough stuff to get off. I've always used a wheel cleaner (like MEGUIAR'S #36 Wheel Cleaner?)designed to specifically get rid of this stuff, you simply spray on, let sit for minute, then hose off. I usually have to end up using a second spray after that, and use a nylon scrub brush/tooth brish to get the nooks and crannies. Simply rinse with water again (make sure you follow the bottle directions).

And as you mentioned, the wheels are clearcoated so you really should put some kind of protection or wax back on them afterwards. It'll make cleaning them easier afterwards. The smoother the surface the less brake dust will adhere.

    Hope this helps,
    TC
  • tariktarik Member Posts: 344
Thanks for your suggestion, but this is a different beast!

What I am talking about is the protective wax "shield", which cars get before they are transported by ship. It is a heavy coating, incredibly sticky and tought.

My dealer never removed that wax from my wheels properly, therefore it keeps trapping more brake dust than the clean wheel ever would. The little recesses for the lug nuts are impossible to clean anyway, this is why I had them remove all four wheel before, in order to get into all crevices.

When I wash the car and clean the wheels, I have to rub hard to get the majority off, but there is still some left, invisible yet attracting brake dust. It makes me freak every time I see it, and I am mad at myself for not making them doing it right to begin with.

I will look into that Meguiar product, but all wheel cleaners I have tried did not help a bit.

    Frustrated Tarik

I'm a "little ole Lady" who really likes the RX300 but can't resolve what the pulling to right means. Someone posted that after 3 or 4 rotations ofthe tires it goes away. Can this really be something buyers have accepted?? Can any od you guys help me?
ALSO the vibration when the car idles really is bothersome do owners accept this (my back is too old for this)? The sales people acted like I'm crazy when I test drove and noticed so I haven't bought but would like to if anybody can help me work through this.
  • hobbybaashobbybaas Member Posts: 11
Boy, your problems sound very unusual. I haven't heard of, or expierenced either of these problems. In fact, myself and so many RX300 owners that I have talked to have been THRILLED with the performance of their RX300. I am so glad that I took the RX300 on a test drive. The other SUV's I looked at, both lower and higher priced, didn't even come close to the spectacular quality of the RX300. I have never come across a car where the owners were so happy with the quality and performance of their car. It is worth every penny of its price and then some. Talk about value! I had set out to actually purchase another car and ended up test driving a whole bunch of other cars while shopping. I questioned a ton of RX300 owners as to their degree of satisfaction, read a few dozen articles on SUV's, and really did my homework. Guess what? The Lexus RX300 came out on top. It came way, way out on top.

I won't slam any other SUV's or some of the childish individuals who have posted on this board. To each his or her own. I'd rather spend that time and energy enjoying a car that Consumer Reports not only recommended, but also gave its highest ratings.

One other nice thing that I noticed is that when I compared the sales people at various car dealerships, it was night and day. The Lexus delerships were so much more professional, and much less concerned with making a fast buck, than the other automobile dealerships. The Lexus dealers after sale follow up and concern for my satisfaction has been just incredible. Just at a time when I thought "Customer Service" was history, I stumble upon LEXUS. Lucky me! I really am, and feel so very fortunate. And guess what? Sometimes I drink coffee from 7/11, McDonalds, and every now and then Starbucks!

I certainly hope that this is not the case, but it may just be that your problem is that your Lexus has the same VIN number as another troubled poster from this board. Although that might be hard to check, because "that" VIN number has NEVER and NEVER WILL materialize.

Best of luck and to all of you SUV owners out there. And that luck is extended to ALL SUV owners - RX 300, X5, ML320, Land Rover, ML430, Navigator, Land Cruiser, Grand Cherokee, Explorer, Passport, Forester, Tribute, Escape, Xterra, Grand Vitara, Sportage, Yugo and Santa Fe.

    Be well everyone!

    Tarik & 4649 --

If keeping your RX factory wheels clean is a problem, trying having them chromed by a local shop for $400-500 per set. If you can't find such a shop, your tire dealer will have it done for you; you're going to need him to reinstall the tires anyway.

It's done on an exchange basis; you give up your factory wheels and get chromed factory wheels in return. Two big advantages - just about every RX body color I've seen looks better with chrome wheels and brake dust and other dirt has a hard time staying on their surface.

    Good luck.

A few years ago now I was surprised to learn that a defective tire on the front can cause a car to pull to the right. The tires were replaced under warranty.

'Cause my wife told me that she had put a little bit of diesel into her RX by mistake the other day.

Leather care - Zaino Leather in the Bottle is VERY good. You can also check out the Hide Food that is carried by all Jaguar dealers and I think Lexus dealers have it too.
