Good luck and let us know how it goes.
Thanks
I calculated out the size you chose and you'll come in at 29.05" for the overall diameter, with the stock tires being at 28.40". Technically, this is within +/-3% that you really shouldn't deviate from so that you don't screw up your odo, vehicle systems, nav, etc.
I'm not sure whether that width will mount on the stock rims, but your tire guy should know.
Hope this helps,
TC
I was also told by www.tirerack.com that they don't recommend changing the size on the RX.
The 255/65-16's would show a speedo reading 2.28% too slow
The 235/70-16's would show a reading 1.94% too slow
Well, while doing some technical research on another issue, I came across this:
"Canceling Vibration: The ES 300 sedan and RX 300 sport-utility both feature an active engine mount that helps keep even the smallest vibrations from reaching the passenger compartment. A solenoid-controlled diaphragm produces pulses equal-but-opposite to those of the engine, canceling out vibration with every power stroke."
Active cancellation technology is one area I am very familar with. If this unit in the RX was slightly out of phase with it's normal operation, that would produce a "beat frequency" that might simulate a low frequency vibration. I suggest raising this point with a lead tech.
Hope this helps,
TC
I'll keep you posted on the tire situation.
rx rustproofed? , such as ziebart rustproofing?
or would this be a waste of money?
the husky liners that tony has recommended are
just excellent!!!
He said that they occasionally get cloth RX's in. He stated that I could in theory get the RX the way I want it but I couldn't order it. He believed that the Nav could be added by the dealer. (I wonder about this) Oh well, I will accept leather and a roof though I hate paying for something that I don't really want and won't use that often.
I have leather and sunroof in my 94 ES300. The leather has been ok but I hardly ever use the sunroof. As far as resale value is concerned, I don't care about this because I keep the cars I buy for a long time. I wouldn't be trading my ES nor would I plan to trade my RX. I guess I don't have a choice but to accept the leather and roof.
I will let you know what the second dealer tells me when he gets back to me.
Oh yeah, have you decided to buy an extended warranty? If so, are you shopping several Lexus/Toyota dealers? Just curious...
CKD
... none with options. When asked, a salesman said the NAV must be ordered with leather etc... was next door to the Toyota dealer, so I compared the Highlander's cloth with the RX...
almost identical, I thought the Toyota's was better-looking. Neither were that attractive, seemed out-of-place on the RX, but maybe I'm just used to the leather...
Yea, I'm suspect about the dealer adding the Lexus Nav unit after the fact also. I'd get it in writing with a firm price.

But when I tried my friend's ZIP in the LA area (90275), the Cars Direct price is the same as the invoice price!
Is the market really that low in LA, or is there a glitch in their software?
It seems you only get the "invoice=selling price" if you select a base model and options. If you select a Nav model you get about $800 over invoice, which is still a great price.
Whether it is a glitch or not, if I was in the market for an RX and lived within a couple of hundred miles, I'd be placing an order on Carsdirect and making them stick to the published price.
Anyone out there care to try?
Very similar tenor to their posts.
Extended warranties are beneficial for people that keep vehicles for extended periods of time regardless of the make. As I stated before, I own a 94 ES with more than 100K miles on it. I'm glad that I bought an extended warranty for it since it has saved me a few thousand dollars in repair costs.
As for me inquiring about cloth seating, It's my prerogative to check out any option that I want and buy any car that I want. If I wanted a Hyundai,Isuzu or Durango, I would be on those boards talking to more idiots like you.
For leather care, you want to get a product called Lexol. They make both a cleaner and conditioner, available at most car stores and online at www.carcareonline.com
Hope this helps,

Wider Tires follow up: I took in to NTB to see if Michelin LTX/MS 255/65/16 would fit on the original 16" rim. Guess what, it did! The RX looked great; a little higher, wider, and more muscular. However, because I have the front brush guard, the tires did rub against the metal of these gurards on sharp corners. I had to go back to the originals. For those of you who don't have these metal guards, I think it should work fine. No need for the spacers. There is approx 1/2" (front) and 1/4" (back) clearance from the struts. If you decide to get them replaced, don't forget to replace the spare also if you have an AWD. Being an all time four wheel drive, the diameter for all tires must be the same. There is approx 0.7" difference between the two. Also regarding the spare, even though it will fit in the back of the trunk, the cover will not close properly. You may need a velcro, or some other means. It shouldn't rattle, since it is carpeted. It was 2hrs well spent.
a) Do you see any of us posting in the Hyundai Owners board like you just did here? Just remember, turnabout is fair play. Remember your wonderful Hyundai owner GTMustang?
b) Most of us are happy with our vehicle purchases and feel no need to defend them like they were living beings that needed our help. Why is it that Hyundai owners must rally to the cause? Are you on Hyundai's payroll? Own stock in the company? Does your vehicle purchase define who you are? Just curious....
c) Last time I checked, there were no personal slanders directed towards any one individual which would violate Edmund's rules. There was a heated exchange between two potential Lexus owners. Are you guys the thought police and it's your job to regulate every conversation???
d) There's an old saying, "If the shoe fits, wear it."
Have a great day!

Just the vision of tens of dozens of Santa Fee owners bowing (like those little plastic NFL statues with helmets on the dashboard) while they drive, no doubt make possible by all their extra space without those troublesome side airbags, was so exciting that I almost spilled my Starbucks latte this morning...
And you had to go defend us with clam reasoning and logic. Please stop immediately; you know that has no place on these boards!
I get paid a dime everytime I mention their name.
Lexol lexol lexol lexol lexol!
Cha-ching! Now I have enough money to buy more wood pieces for my vehicle interior.
Life is good!
I am curious as to why you find it necessary to come to this board and defend your rides.
Again, I apologize for offending those whom were offended.
VSC and TRACs: TRACs is traction control and used to help keep your wheels from spinning (unecessarily). VSC is a superset of TRACs, ABS, throttle control, and yaw detection. VSC will help to stabilize your vehicle by preventing/correcting front-end swerve and rear-end fishtailing. This also helps prevent "untripped" rollovers. Untripped rollovers are rollovers that happen when the vehicle rolls over without one of the wheels hitting an obstacle (like a curb) or road deformity.
For more info, see for yourself at LexusSafety.com
Hope this helps,

Tonycrys-A.)Yes, I have seen you post on the S.F. message board. Is the RX300 board like an exclusive country club which denies entry to some?...Gmustang, I believe, does not own a SF and we would probably agree on our opinions of him.
B.) Why rally to the cause? Because I was offended when you called SF owners idiots.
C.) See B. above
D.) Ditto back at you--carpe diem
Jeffmust-Be careful where you spill !
It seems when confronted with simple logic, everything in your universe seems to break down.
You haven't answered the question everyone is wondering about: why would anyone get upset whether someone said anything about a car or it's owners collectively? You mean to tell me that if the New York Times wrote a review of the Santa Fe and said that anyone who paid MSRP or over is short-sighted financially because of lousy resale value? What would you do, barage the NYTimes with letters? Picket outside their offices?
Ever since GTMustang, I swore I would never stoop to his level and post in the Hyundai discussion board anymore the way he posted here. Why can't you do the same? Or would you prefer that Lexus owners come over and correct all the wrong assumptions about safety, side airbags, break-in procedures, performance, etc, etc, etc.? It could be quite amusing to say the least.
But guess what? I would prefer not to, I have better things to do with my time, hopefully you do too.
Enjoy your day.
Because it's amusing!
And you are absolutley right, you are free to post wherever you want. My only sugestion is that you be prepared to debate the facts, use verifiable data, and actually have some insightful comments to contribute.
Happy to see you here. I guess I'll be posting in the Santa Fe board since you'll be here offering us your fascinating insights on various issues. Make sure your fellow members know I'm there with your invitation.
Malhokc - my apologies, I'm trying to be as civil as possible, but sometimes... you know. I'll stop and let whoever wants to have the last word have it, since it seems to make them feel better.
I live in Santa Monica, and have to ask... go to 4 different sites, get 4 different "invoice prices"...my question - is the invoice price quoted on CarsDirect accurate? If so, the price for an L.A. zip is really good... at Christmas time, their price was actually BELOW the quoted invoice price!!
Not many pictures have been released about the impending SilverSport Edition. Here's some that might be helpful, intriguing, etc.
http://www.velocityjrnl.com/jrnl/2001/v2kmdl2273mult.html
BTW, only the interior shot and the front angle shot are the SilverSport.
Should be in dealer showrooms in April.
I tried (hot) pressure washing, but was afraid of getting too close to the clear coat on the rims.
Help, because the rest of the (black) car now looks awesome again (after Meguiar's wax, drool...).
Tarik
I'm assuming you are talking about brake dust (that black sludge that builds up)? If so, this is tough stuff to get off. I've always used a wheel cleaner (like MEGUIAR'S #36 Wheel Cleaner?)designed to specifically get rid of this stuff, you simply spray on, let sit for minute, then hose off. I usually have to end up using a second spray after that, and use a nylon scrub brush/tooth brish to get the nooks and crannies. Simply rinse with water again (make sure you follow the bottle directions).
And as you mentioned, the wheels are clearcoated so you really should put some kind of protection or wax back on them afterwards. It'll make cleaning them easier afterwards. The smoother the surface the less brake dust will adhere.
Hope this helps,
TC
What I am talking about is the protective wax "shield", which cars get before they are transported by ship. It is a heavy coating, incredibly sticky and tought.
My dealer never removed that wax from my wheels properly, therefore it keeps trapping more brake dust than the clean wheel ever would. The little recesses for the lug nuts are impossible to clean anyway, this is why I had them remove all four wheel before, in order to get into all crevices.
When I wash the car and clean the wheels, I have to rub hard to get the majority off, but there is still some left, invisible yet attracting brake dust. It makes me freak every time I see it, and I am mad at myself for not making them doing it right to begin with.
I will look into that Meguiar product, but all wheel cleaners I have tried did not help a bit.
Frustrated Tarik
ALSO the vibration when the car idles really is bothersome do owners accept this (my back is too old for this)? The sales people acted like I'm crazy when I test drove and noticed so I haven't bought but would like to if anybody can help me work through this.
I won't slam any other SUV's or some of the childish individuals who have posted on this board. To each his or her own. I'd rather spend that time and energy enjoying a car that Consumer Reports not only recommended, but also gave its highest ratings.
One other nice thing that I noticed is that when I compared the sales people at various car dealerships, it was night and day. The Lexus delerships were so much more professional, and much less concerned with making a fast buck, than the other automobile dealerships. The Lexus dealers after sale follow up and concern for my satisfaction has been just incredible. Just at a time when I thought "Customer Service" was history, I stumble upon LEXUS. Lucky me! I really am, and feel so very fortunate. And guess what? Sometimes I drink coffee from 7/11, McDonalds, and every now and then Starbucks!
I certainly hope that this is not the case, but it may just be that your problem is that your Lexus has the same VIN number as another troubled poster from this board. Although that might be hard to check, because "that" VIN number has NEVER and NEVER WILL materialize.
Best of luck and to all of you SUV owners out there. And that luck is extended to ALL SUV owners - RX 300, X5, ML320, Land Rover, ML430, Navigator, Land Cruiser, Grand Cherokee, Explorer, Passport, Forester, Tribute, Escape, Xterra, Grand Vitara, Sportage, Yugo and Santa Fe.
Be well everyone!
I have the same problem with the wheels on my 2000 RX. It really is hard to get off and keeps coming back?
Dennis
If keeping your RX factory wheels clean is a problem, trying having them chromed by a local shop for $400-500 per set. If you can't find such a shop, your tire dealer will have it done for you; you're going to need him to reinstall the tires anyway.
It's done on an exchange basis; you give up your factory wheels and get chromed factory wheels in return. Two big advantages - just about every RX body color I've seen looks better with chrome wheels and brake dust and other dirt has a hard time staying on their surface.
Good luck.
Leather care - Zaino Leather in the Bottle is VERY good. You can also check out the Hide Food that is carried by all Jaguar dealers and I think Lexus dealers have it too.
