It is with some measure of sadness that I finally bid farewell to our 2001 Seq today. This car has served our family so well, through several CA-to-NV-to-CA trips loaded with friends and family. Purchased Dec 13, 2000.

If this helps anyone looking for a fair price on theirs...

    2001 Seq SR5 2WD,
    63K miles
    Silver/platinum, leather seats
Roof rack, dual air, privacy glass
New Michelin C/T, new brake pads
    Paid $34K + TTL
5 years, 63K miles later, traded in for $16K. Not bad. Car was in excellent condition. Well cared for, all maint. performed on time... Great truck. Will be missed greatly. Took possession of a 2003 LX470 as the replacement. Their really is no comparison, except to say, it was immediately apparent how much larger the Sequoia is compared to the LX. But, cest la vie....

As one of the earliest owners and posters on this forum, I'll miss many years of debates, story sharing, endless diatribe about which truck is better - Seq, Tahoe, Expy... Oh the good ol' days... I'll stop by every now and then and see how you all are enjoying your truck.

OAC - I assume you have no real regrets? Am looking to trade my Sequoia for a '03-'06 LC at some point down the road - just wondered if there were any tangibles/intangibles that the Sequoia has over the LC aside from size that I would really miss in moving to the LC. Guessing not, but would like to hear any thoughts you may have.

None whatsoever.... The LX is just so much better although smaller.

... just wondered if there were any tangibles/intangibles that the Sequoia has over the LC aside from size that I would really miss in moving to the LC...

Intangibles for Seq over the LC would include bigger SIZE, option of 2WD over a permanent 4WD, cheaper to maintain (regular gas v premium for LC), similar (but not same) drivetrain, did I say bigger size ? :) As for the LC, assuming status is not an issue for you, its venerable reputation precedes it positively, it is a plusher truck, better riding, and is made of higher quality (build and materials). If you don't mind the loss in size (I don't), the move to the LC is well worth it. Of course, there is a steep price to pay for quality. LC owners have real strong bond to the truck, far more than the Seq ... Whatever problem the LC may have are well known and diagnosed by the LC community, so that should come in handy as an onwer. The Seq is only 5 yrs in the market, but it is a real diamond in the rough truck. Mine was trouble-free throughout the 5 yrs of ownership. IMHO, whichever of these two trucks you own, you won't be disappointed in the long run.

Right, before I have someone screaming at me about running a LPG car...I live in the UK where we are paying €7.00 per gallon of fuel...so the fact that LPG is under half the price makes a lot of sense especially with big engined vehicles.

SO, my question is does anyone have experince of converting a Sequoia and can give me an idea of where the tanks were placed (under the car?). I am seriously looking at importing to the UK a 2006 limited model with all the toys on it as the prices of used European SUV's / 4X4 are double what you are paying and even a used Landcruiser Amazon VX (LC 470 equvilant) is $40000 plus for a recent model with less than 30000 miles on it.

Can anyone give me an insite into how the Sequoia is on the road, quality of materials etc as this is going to be a serious long term thing as servicing is an issue as the model odesn't exist in Europe and its a left hand drive and needs to be modified to comply with UK regulations etc etc etc.

Would appreciate any serious answers... :confuse:

Have a great Christmas...don't drink too much...but of course your beer is so weak..about time you had some decent European stuff!!

I just discovered this forum 3 hours ago and have greatly appreciated all the info. I just signed up. We are wanting to buy our first Toyota SUV (I had a toyota truck in the late 80s and loved it). An 03 Sequoia SR5 has come up at Toyota Dealership near us. It is Certified and was owned by the General Manager's wife.
    Specs:
    03 SR5, 4WD,50,000 miles,Certified,Leather,DVD,premium Stereo,Tow Pak,Moon Roof,
    Asking $28,400

We drove it last night. My wife likes it, I like it, but a couple of questions
1)Any Pros & Cons w/4WD vs 2WD other than the obvious ability to access rougher terrain?
2)Being Certified, is 50k miles for a 2003 reasonable? This kind of mileage on a 4WD, should I be worried?

After reading postings for the last 3 hours, I plan to test drive again today and look closer at interior, but would you buy this car?

Another Dealer, 200 miles away is offering an 05 Sequoia SR5, 2WD, 26k miles, cloth,Tow pak.
    Asking $27,900

Is it worth the drive for a newer,2WD, less leather & DVD?

    Appreciate any advice :)

It sounds like there are lots of features on that SUV that would be nice to have. The 2WD vs 4WD isn't really a question for me. I choose 4WD for all our vehicles because we live in the snow belt and it is an important safety feature for our family when the weather gets rough. How important this is to you depends on your climate and whether you offroad or not. If your answers to these two items are warm, and no, then I'd say you are safe with the 2WD. The tradeoff with the 2WD is features (DVD, premium sound, etc), leather (this would tilt the scales for me - leather + kids = easy clean up). On the up side you get a newer model year, lower mileage vehicle, + you save some bucks (although for me $500 would NOT be a deal breaker).

My advice would be to go for the 03. If I were you, that is what I'd do.

    Things to watch for:

    - VSC/TRAC problems cropping up intermittently. These kinds of problems are difficult to troubleshoot and expensive to repair.

    - Door handles. Check these for their condition. There have been a couple of reports of problems with these.

    - Vibrations in the drive line at low speeds and highway speeds. Take it for a comprehensive test drive WITHOUT the stereo on and pay close attention to the ride.

    - Surging. There have been some reports of high idle speeds in the Sequoia that seem to last longer than they are supposed to. The vehicle is suopposed to idle higher until warm-up, but people have reported this lasts longer in some vehicles than it should.

That is about all that comes to mind. Hope this helps.

    fulofunk,

Don't know if this info will help or not, but I will post it anyway. You might want to check around your local dealers and see if they (1) have any left over 05's and (2) see what they are willing to let it go for.
Example, on ebay, item #4600212706, they have a brand new 05 4wd SR5 without leather selling for $30,782. That's pretty cheap IMO of course for a great SUV that has an MSRP of almost 38k. This truck is listed in NY and obviously the deals differ in different regions of the US, but I think it might be worth a shot.

In regards to your specific question, if 4WD and the other goodies in the 03 are not important to you then I would go with the 05. Less money, less mileage and obviously newer.
BTW, I paid 32,500 (plus fees in August of 04)) for a my Sequoia SR5 2004 (brand new), 2wd, with leather, 10 speaker JBL system, Alloy wheel package #2 & tow package (in Florida). Dealer took about 6k off my 38k MSRP Sequoia because the 05's were hitting the lot and they needed to move their 04's.
Hope this helps and good luck! ;)

Same as others. Depends if you want/need 4WD. I prefer cloth anyway and had to order mine as all around here were leather. The '05 has the 5 speed tranny and VVT-i motor which is smoother with more hp. With the '05 you can pick up the 7yr/100k warranty for about $900 since it's still in factory warranty coverage. I live in NY and go skiing, beach, slippery boat ramps, and some light off road and would never buy a 2WD SUV. I'd say mileage is kinda high for both but especially the '05, my '03 only has 27k.

This is a big help tourguide. We are test driving today :-) Thanks for your input
  • fulofunkfulofunk Member Posts: 3
The 05 does have more appeal for me. We are going to see one today with 14K miles. It's Dec 30 so things should be in our favor :)

Any tahoe owners that bought a Seqouia -feedback?

We currently own a tahoe and are considering trading it in for a 2005 or 2006 Sequoia.

    Pros/Cons of Tahoe vs Seqouia?

    Thanks!

Has anyone converted a 4WD Sequoia to run on LPG, if so where did you put the tank(s) for the LPG? I am planning on importing a 2006 Limited model to the UK but with the price of Gas here will need to convert it to LPG. Landcruisers no problem but Sequoia not a model availible here so need the info in advance before payimng the money :confuse:

    jbeantown,

I owned a 2000 Tahoe (new body style) prior to buying my 04' Sequoia. I loved the Tahoe when it first came out. Let me give you some of the noticeable differences that I observed personally:

    Tahoe had over the Sequoia:
    more power
    more fuel efficient

I owned the Tahoe up to about 65k miles. It really started to drive bad i.e. just didn't feel like it did when it was new. Small things were going wrong with it and the one major problem with it was that it stalled at least once a day when I started it up and was making a turn and drove with the AC on :confuse: I didn't want to own the truck anymore because I could feel the problems starting to happen and don't get me wrong I was meticulous about maintenance.

I have had absolutely no issues (except less power and it sucks gas) with my 04 Sequoia. It has about 27k miles on it. The Sequoia also seems to be bigger IMO of course than the Tahoe. Oh, and of course the known reliability of Toyota helps as well. I don't regret my decision of purchasing the Toyo over buying a new Tahoe.

Question is at this point- Do I love my Sequoia enough not to buy the up coming redesigned Tahoe next year ;) Chances are I will keep my Sequoia because it is a great SUV but that new 2007 Tahoe looks great (IMO)!
I haven't heard of any re-designs or seen any spy shots of the next generation Sequoia though.

    Hope this helps.

Re: VSC/TRAC - I have an '01 4WD SR5 Sequoia and have recently been noticing intermittent issues with the VSC and Traction Control lights appearing on the dash. They come on sporadically and always go off when I restart the vehicle, but usually reappear from time to time. Its way out of warranty and I am not especially inclined to let the dealer troubleshoot for $$$. Anyone had similar issues with VSC/TRAC and related advice?
  • sequoiasoonsequoiasoon Member Posts: 223
Have you checked the brake fluid? There is a sensor on the side of the master cylinder reservoir that deactivates VSC and Tracs if the fluid is low (to reserve it for brakes). If this is it, it is also an indication that it might be time for new brakes. Fluid level drops as brakes wear.
  • flyfish4lifeflyfish4life Member Posts: 103
I had the TSB done on my brakes (complete new set at 90K) and I have 111K right now. Hopefully, they are still in good shape, but I will definitely check the fluid levels this weekend. Thanks for the input.
  • petro33petro33 Member Posts: 192
My '01 now has 105K miles on it and running great. Brakes don't last very long, and I have an issue with the black paint comming off the roof rack, but the rest is normal maintaince. About ready to replace the battery, did the tires at 35K and still have the repacement tires on the vehicle. Engine the the best I have ever had always runs smooth and sound, I do use mobil 1 synthetic oil and change every 5K.

Love the leather as it is sooooo easy to clean. If I could look for things I don't like it would be how the second row of seats work, tumbling them up and strapping they up seems cumbersom for a $40K vehicle.

I read in the paper today that used SUVs are a drug on the market as gas prices are moving people to smaller cars. I would not pay over invoice for a new one and definitly not over low blue book for a used, as there are a lot of traded in vehicles out there.

I believe Toyota will be coming out with a new re-design 2007 Sequoia model. With more horse power and bigger body. It should be available in the fall 2006. That's the one the I'm waiting to purchase.

I just came back from dealer re: VSC/TRAC that goes on and off intermmitently. After my 6th attempt with the dealer, they were able to replace the translation computer and also replaced the skid control computer. The total amount that I should have paid if I didn't have the extended warranty will be over 3K (not including labor). I'm sure your dealer can do something about it due to several complaints from other customers who bought Sequioas. As per my toyota dealer, it was a manufacturer's error. They said the factory will be billed for the entire amount, not the dealer. I suggest going to your dealer to complain. Good luck.

Hi, My Toyota has 70K and VSC light is on/off for a while( 3-4 months).Dealer wanted 125$ just for attaching the scanner to find out the code. My mechanic did for free and told me that steering angle sensor is broken. The problem is this sensor costs 380$ + labor. What did you do with yours? Please respond to tag.1@netzero.net

Can't get to my email so will post here. Going to take it in this week and see what they say. Strange thing is I have noticed that VSC/TRAC lights come on typically after I fill up w/ gas - weird. Usually just turn off the vehicle and restart and the lights are gone - I am not intrested in spending $380 or anything near that. Will post once they diagnose.
  • turbovolksturbovolks Member Posts: 2
My VSC/TRac shuts off the odd time, usually when it is really cold.

Hi, I have a 2001 LTD with 100,000 miles. I have had no problems up to now. I get a vibration noise(thumping),like a bearing, only between 37-43 miles per hour, it seems to be coming from the transfer case. When I have a load or put into 4x4, it disappears. Dealer is waiting until it gets louder.Any ideas Thanks.

I wonder if gas prices are having an impact on the general interest and sales of the Sequoia? Not many messages this year. I hope the 2007 has a fresh look.

Toyota Sequoia sales slid 30 percent in February. Most SUV sales were down except the new Tahoe which is bucking the trend. (Chicago Tribune)

Maybe buyers know there's a new Sequoia coming out based on the next-generation Tundra?

There's really not much interest here about the possibilty of a redesigned Sequoia coming out in 07.

Well, I plan to attend the New York Auto show next month. Already made my hotel reservation. I hope Toyota debuts a "new" 2007 Sequoia, as I plan to trade in my 03. I'd also love to see Toyota bring back the Supra.
  • blackdog4blackdog4 Member Posts: 67
I am very interested in the 2007 Sequoia. I have a ten year old Explorer I want to replace. I hope it will hold together until the release of the new model. I have a 2002 Sequoia with about 46,000 miles on it and have been very happy with it.

High on my wish list for the 2007 model would be third row seats that fold flat into the floor. It is a pain to take out and store them when extra space is needed.

Also, because the new Tundra is bigger, I hope that this will not translate into a bigger Sequoia. I can just barely get my 2002 into the garage now. I am glad I have the electric folding mirrors!

I think that the lack of response to your posts is due to a dearth of information from Toyota. When leaks of information about the new model start, this board will light up again.

I am not sure if my cable or plastic is broken. The latch still has spring action, but the latch has been difficult to open at times. And my hatch won't open. And the inside is packed full of stuff that can't come out the side doors.
I can see the white plastic you referrenced down inside the door by looking through the gap at the top of the window. I can also move the inner latch with a screwdriver.
If you think that my cable is broke, do you think that I could activate the cable release somehow with a screwdriver?

Anyone had this done yet? I am at 118K and recently have noted an issue with my engine. Have never towed, but the engine now sounds like I am towing a boat or something - almost diesel like sound/heavy ticking noise under moderate acceleration. Continues to tick (but goes away) after you let off the accelerator. Have done all of the sevices to date and 3,000 mile oil changes. Hope it's not serious, but it is definitely abnormal. Anyone else experience engine or valve issues to date?

Did you try Red Line fuel injector cleaner and Auto-RX?
I had that problem started at 36K. It is now 45K, going smoother than ever...

I have a 2002 Sequoia with 25,400 miles that has increased engine knock / slap upon exertion, like going up a slight incline. Any ideas, as when I had it checked at Toyota they said that it may be carbon build up and just to add some fuel additive, which I did and it made no difference.

    Thanks.

I did run a three part cleaner through and didn't seem to make a difference. I will try the Red line and auto-rx.

A large local newspaper is looking to interview consumers who purchased a Lexus, Toyota or Scion vehicle and what led you to purchase that vehicle. Please send an e-mail to ctalati@edmunds.com no later than Wednesday, April 5, 2006 containing your daytime contact information, along with the make and model your vehicle.

Thanks, I will consider that. But from doing some research, I think it could be a cracked exhaust manifold - which is something these V-8s are known for. I will be taking it to my independent guy in the next week or so and will update the board then.

I can't find any crash test results or safety testing information on my 2005 Toyota Sequoia Limited 4wd. I want to know if my second row passenger doors have steel beams in them? I have a 2001 SR5 55000 miles and no problems. The entire front braking system replaced by Toyota at 23000 miles no cost to me.The braking system appeared fine just needed new front pads . The Toyota dealership replaced every thing due to the TSB on the brakes.I like the vehicle alot and plan to buy a new 4 door Tundra in 2007 when the new model goes on sale. You can not go wrong with Toyota.I have owned two Fords both had on going problems that continued from one model year to the next.I have owned several general motors products which were good. The Sequioa has been by far the best most reliable vehicle that I have ever owned.

I dont own a Sequioa, but I just wanted to find out why does the Sequioa have more horsepower and torque than the Tundra. (Sequioa 273, Tundra 271) torque (Sequioa 314, Tundra 313). Shouldn't they have the same horsepower and torque numbers? :confuse:

If you use the third row seat often for passengers you will be disappointed by 2007 Tahoe's third row seat. It has no space for the legs. Literally, the seats are placed only several inches above the floor, and the passenger would have to crouch with their knees folded in front of the chest. No human being would be able to tolerate this position for any extended period of time. How could a supervisor of GM designers approve this human-unfriendly design! I am a happy owner of a 2001 Sequoia with 65000 original miles and I tell you, Toyota designs its vehicles for the use of real humans.
