    I was critical of them taking a TDI Passat because they had already tested that same powertrain in two Jettas, but I think the 1.8 is a very valid fleet addition. It is an interesting base powertrain that will be in a number of VW models, and as a small-displacement turbo I will be curious to see how it does powering a midsize sedan compared to the Fusion.

    What's so interesting about the 1.8? VW/Audio have been using a 1.8T since the late 90s and it is putting out about the same power as it always has. Seems like a snoozefest to me...

    "what's so interesting about the 1.8"? a) it's replacing the controversial 5 cylinder, b) it's one of several attempts to replace larger displacement normally aspirated engines with a small turbo as the volume family sedan engine, c) Ford did this rather poorly so I'd like to see if VW can pull it off, d) not everyone is kevm14 or has kevm14's interests, e) Edmunds has a Corvette if the Passat ain't your thing.

    Not sure what changed since December, but I just looked at a Passat SE 1.8T. Not required to get the SEL. I'm seriously considering purchasing the newly updated Sonata SE 2.4, but I think I owe this car a thorough test drive. We already eliminated the Accord EX, Camry SE Sport, and Subaru Legacy Sport. My wife doesn't care about skidpad numbers or track times...... The 1.8T looks like a great daily driver engine with torque available at 1500 rpms.
