    I do like the GTI gauges. They've resisted the temptation to do anything too trendy or gimmicky, but they still don't look cheap or stale. One nit to pick: 180mph? Why do we insist on speedometers that greatly exceed what the vehicle is capable of? Everyone does this, most 4 cylinder family sedans have 160mph gauges. Granted, VW has done the clever bit of scaling at the end, where it jumps from 140 to 180 in a small gap. This is far better than the way most do it, with consistent increments from 0-160mph so the 0-80mph that you will typically use is stuck in only 90degrees of sweep.

    i wonder how accurate the speedometer is at 175 mph? it isn't like vw tested its accuracy at those speeds...

    I don't know about 175, but at 140, it's dead accurate.

    A 180 mph gauge is nuts. 99% of the use is now compromised.

    VW has been using the basic layout for many years and I'm glad they stuck with it. Why change what isn't broken. The biggest change is the move from the red lighting to white lighting at night. I also like that they use this basic layout through the entire lineup. I wish others would do that. Spend the R&D money to come up with absolute best design then put it in everything. Saves money in the long run and gives all your vehicles a great familiarity. Same with steering wheels. Come up with a great design (3 spoke in my opinion) make them all black and put them in everything.

    Agreed how frustrating it is that a car electronically limited in the US to 130mph needs a 180mph speedo to take up valuable gauge sweep and readability. At least there's a digital display of speed selectable. Everywhere the GTI is sold without a speed limiter uses km/hr (except maybe UK?) so you could run the numbers up to 150.

    But why did they clutter the speedo with km/hr markings for the Mk7?? The Mk6 had an easy to access display option that would read km/hr digitally on the driver's display screen, thus keeping the speedo even cleaner with only mph numbers. And with my regular forays into Canada, this is a useful feature indeed...
