  It's almost always better to spring for the more powerful engines when you're talking about small-midsized crossovers. Even if the base engine feels alright on a test drive, it'll feel a bit lethargic when you're loaded up with passengers and cargo. I'm glad that Jeep did the right thing and gave buyers the option of a more robust powertrain.

  @rsholland: Hi, Bob. I have to admit I was out of the game for most of this year, so if there have been early transmission issues, I'm not aware of them. So far, our only complaints with the 9AT in this particular vehicle are slow upshifts (http://www.edmunds.com/jeep/cherokee/2014/long-term-road-test/2014-jeep-cherokee-limited-performance-testing.html) and a lack of engine braking (http://www.edmunds.com/jeep/cherokee/2014/long-term-road-test/2014-jeep-cherokee-limited-wheres-the-engine-braking.html).

  Erin, there have been several transmission software re-calibrations. I think they've got it fine-tuned by now. The dog clutches have been causing abrupt shifts.
