  So are you allowed to change your own oil in Oregon, or as with gasoline, are you forced by regulation to have someone do it for you? :P

  If you rely upon the vehicle to tell you it needs service, just like letting it tell you its tires are low, these supposed convenience features will inconvenience you. If you proactively query the vehicle's monitors or check these items the old-fashioned way, you can deal with then at your convenience.

  Oil life monitors show how much oil was wasted for decades when we were all doing oil changes at 3,000 miles. My Acura always goes 10,000 miles between changes, doesn't burn any oil and runs great with 135,000 miles on it. As more vehicles are equipped with oil life monitors the demand for oil goes down. Combine that with the CAFE regulations requiring more fuel efficient vehicles and more widespread use of synthetic oil it's no surprise the demand for oil has gone down. Economics 101 states that when supply is greater than demand the prices go down. Loving the cheap gas prices.

  Sorry to burst your bubble allthingshonda, but fewer oil changes and even higher MPG is a rounding error when it comes to oil usage. Even if we only counted the US, ever more vehicles on the roads and higher miles traveled in total are of far greater impact in the other direction. Other factors impacting prices include changes and costs and ability to refine the oil, the impact of changes in usage in other countries(especially China and India as there economies slow down or speed up), or the Saudis pumping more oil to drive down the price to try to drive higher cost producers(fracking) out of business.
