    The whole thing is lunacy. There shouldn't need to be a conversion at all. The whole humanity should be thinking in meters/kilos/Celsius and that's the end of it.

    It looks like yd are being used because they designer of the GPS (which may not be VW at all) didn't want to make the text box bigger just to accommodate the handful of countries that use ft for altitude. And while the coincidence of m and yd is suspicious, I often find a large discrepancy between GPS altitude and roadside markers, because you need more satellites to get accurate altitude than location, the datum used may be different, and the marker may refer to a nearby high spot and not that precise location. Mazda doesn't even bother to give me altitude on its current GPS system, just one of its many deficiencies
