  In some regions of the country scratches = rust so their is greater incentive for treating the bed than there might be in Cali.

  And in those areas, the liners can scratch the bed underneath and trap moisure, accelerating rust. And you won't notice unless you pull the liner out.

  Right. A friend of mine had a drop in liner and when he took it out the bed of his truck was scratched, and there was some rusting. Another has had a Line-X sprayed liner for over 10 years and it's still in great shape, as far as he can tell the bed itself has no issues. I'd probably get the factory sprayed liner myself if I could, otherwise I'd be getting an aftermarket sprayed one soon after getting a truck. I just look at it as protecting the investment.
  
  Does anyone know if the GM factory sprayed liners are the Line-X type where the finish is more "plastic" or like Rhino-Liner that's more rubbery?

  It looks great in your picture. Very hard to tell it's not a factory option. Speaking of which, looking at this truck side-by-side with one that has a factory bed liner, what differences do you see?
