  GM's corner step bumper is the better solution. But then some credit has to go to Ford since they were first with assist steps to get in the bed.   The corner step isn't that great, good chance to trip over the retaining wire holding the tailgate when horizontal. Those foot activated side rails are impressive.

  I think Chevrolet had to cave once they made the bed taller, and lifted the 2WD to 4WD height. And of course they couldn't do the same thing as Ford. The corner step may need to be larger, since I've seen some photos of guys with bigger feet, in work boots, finding not much purchase (and also harder to use than Ford's solution if your hands are full); but it does have the virtue of being essentially free. The motorized running board attempts to make virtue (to GM, not necessarily the customer) of the problem the design created by offering a presumably highly profitable option.

  The corner steps are somewhat useful until it rains or you back into something. Talk about making a simple solution complicated with those running boards. Ford has had a deployable side box step as an option on the F-150 for several years now and it's pretty much all you need.

  I didn't care for the man step when I first heard about it. I didn't think I would ever use it and that it would be in the way. But then I bought a used truck that happened to have it. I'm a very fit 27 year old and I have deployed the man step many many times in the 6 months I have had my truck. I now see it as a major advantage to the f150. It only takes about two seconds to deploy it fully. If you use your truck as a truck and are often loading items in the bed it is extremely useful. I also use it so that my 12 year old dog can get into and out of the back of the truck on his own. Chevy and ram will be behind as long as they refuse to admit the man step is a great idea and put it on their own trucks. The bumper step wouldn't be nearly as easy to use and isn't very aesthetically pleasing.
