BMW vs. Audi - long term reliability

Audi (and VW) has a reputation for their cars needing expensive repairs as they age. Is the same true for BMW?

I have been considering a used A4 to keep long term, but that reputation is giving me pause. I have owned a VW Passat for 12 years, and it has in fact had some expensive repairs. Am I better off with a 3-series as far as long term reliability, or are they similar to Audi?

I think the German marques are all similar, with the possible exception of Porsche (if you keep up the maintenance religiously, which is expensive). That said, a recent well-maintained 3 series would be as good as any German car. I've considered it.

The famous German engineering demands expensive maintenance. I would never buy a used German luxury sedan. My choice would be Lexus, Acura or Infinity.
