2007 Ford Escape. The alarm goes off for no reason. What might be the cause?

I have a 2007 Ford Escape which I purchased new. The car alarm has started to go off for no reason. No one is around it: No one has tried to break into it. The alarm button on the key fob has not been hit. It just starts to beep - any time of the day or night.

    Try to see if the interior lights are coming on when the alarm goes off. It could just be a defective door switch.
