Another Quad owner in No VA, I have a 2000 4x4 quad 4.7l, auto, tow package Garnet red/driftwood.
I am in the Vienna/Fairfax area. I'm somewhat amazed as busy as Northern Virginia is I have only seen about 5 others.

Beside reversing blade, wrapping with making tape prior to making the cut helps to keep cuts smooth. Try on a scrap piece first.

  • bookittybookitty Member Posts: 1,303
Make that "masking" tape. Works even better!

  • towcrazy2towcrazy2 Member Posts: 337
Good points on both the tape and the test-cut... There should be plenty of extra length on the Durango front door molding to accomodate.

This is all assuming that the Durango molding is color-impregnated throughout the piece (as the black is). If not, a touch-up with the appropriate hue and clear coat on the butt end would be required.

good to hear im not all alone in VA. who did you get your truck from and do you like them?

Got the truck back from dealer and pleased with the results. The torsion bars were adjusted to eliminate the 1" sag on the front passenger side. Now measures even. Did yet another front end alignment after the torsion adjustment and now the steering wheel is also aligned straight. Head mechanic said TSB 130100 was on 2000s 0nly. New parts on 2001 and TSB doesn't apply. Also unable to recreate popping noise. May have been related to torsion bar adjustment, time will tell. Thanks for the information and help to all.

mulderig - I suspected as much. Plain black and not color keyed (bright silver) to my new Quad. What's your take on ripping the dang thing off if I don't like the look? Will the tape pull-off damage the paint? Or maybe I can apply some kind of loosening agent (that's what she said) to the overall molding and then ease that puppy off. It might look great and this might be all academic. But, just in case...

    thanks. Dave.

PS - Still interested in hearing from any So Cal Quad owners who had the Line-X applied at a reputable, fair-priced (is there such a thing in California?) dealer. thanks.

I have removed all my stickers using a heat gun and a glue removal substance. I believe it was Acrysal or something like that. Any body shop supplier can recommend a worthy product. Just have patience. I warmed the stickers to soften them. Pealed them by hand then applied the adhesive removal and used my finger nails on the rest. The adhesive removal will remove wax and most don't do well on plastics so be careful. I waxed over the sticker spots and presto, A clean looking truck. I love it but wife and Kid liked the decals. Go figure.

Still waiting. DC informed me last Friday Sept 15th that my Quad was built and would be shipped that day....well it's been built. I called back this past Tuesday and it has still not been put onto a rail car yet. The DC rep. told me to call back on Friday to see if anything has changed.

It's kiling me to know that my truck is ready but that it's just sitting there not moving. I don't know what the transit time will be to Colorado once it get on it's way. I hope it shorter than I think.

ps I ordered the truck on Sept 6th, it was in D-1 status on Sept 11th and was assembled Sept 14th.
  • bookittybookitty Member Posts: 1,303
Steve, the reality of manufacturing, is the fact that things can be built in less time that it takes to round up a ride on a truck or rail car. This is the "glitch" in manufacturing. Be patient, you will love your new truck.

Had a weird thought (one of many)! You could have your bed sprayed with Line-X and then have them spray the body side molding to match. Who knows, might start a whole new look in custom Quads. Rick
  • iowabigguyiowabigguy Member Posts: 552
If you do decide to remove the molding I've seen a body shop guy use heavy duty fishing line hooked to 2 short pieces of broom stick. He got the line under the molding, used some WD-40 as a lube and kinda worked the line back and forth detaching the molding from the adhesive backing. The molding was removed undamaged and once cleaned up and refitted with new double sided tape it was ready for reinstallation on the repaired body panel. Anyway once the molding was removed there was just the double sided tape to be removed which appeared to come off fairly easily. Rick
  • astaasta Member Posts: 122
thanks for that tip. I like both of your suggestions, actually! Line-X that dang molding is one way to get it to match the overall look of the truck. who knows? might indeed be a whole new trend that D/Q cannot ignore!

I like that technique with the fishing line and WD40. my only concern would be messing up and scratching the paint with the filament. definitely not a "2-beer" job as some others have posted here in the past. I wish now I had just ordered w/o molding then done it myself for cheaper if I really think the truck needed it. Not a huge thing, but you know the delivery day is getting closer if I'm obsessing over the molding! (as opposed to say unimportant things like the tranny, the engine, the suspension package, the tires etc.)

thanks. ad for the old vehicle goes online this week.

Anybody who has the gull wing tonneau, what is your opinion of it? Waterproof? Heavy duty?? How much did you pay? Dealer installed? Does anybody know if you can get it in Amber Fire??

Also, does anybody know if you can get a dealer to give you some of the incentive if you already have them at invoice?? I'll be ordering the truck.
  • towcrazy2towcrazy2 Member Posts: 337
You're not alone in your idle thoughts about alternative applications for spray bedliner...

My son has an aging Honda CRX as a spare car... Still fairly reliable but the body needs big-time work... After having the Rhino liner sprayed, and got to thinking...

Had a brief talk with him and offered to split the cost of having the entire body "Rhino'd" (about $400)... He's game! No more sanding... No more painting... No more "wax-on, wax-off"... Cool!!!

I put my Quad up on jack stands today to try and find out where the whirring noise was coming from. I engaged the 4 wheel drive and it was very clearly coming from the transfer case at the location where the front drive shaft exits and goes to the front axle (at the bottom). The fluid is supposed to be tranny fluid but it was pretty brown and did not smell like tranny fluid at all. I only have 6400 miles on it and it's seen no hard work thus far. I have a appt Tues to have it checked. No TSB's other than "grinding noise from front wheel area." If anyone has a heads up or hears anything, please post. Thanks.
  • iowabigguyiowabigguy Member Posts: 552
The secret it seemed was getting the fishing line between the actual molding and the double sided tape. When the fishing line was sawed back and forth it was rubbing on the double sided tape and not the finish.

towcrazy2 - a Rhino sprayed paint job?? What have We started. What color, maybe they can mix you up a batch of Amber Fire. Wouldn't that make Boo envious.
  • towcrazy2towcrazy2 Member Posts: 337
The fishing line trick sounds good! Just a thought here... Once the cut is started at one end of the molding, you might try "wedging" immediately behind the cut with toothpicks to keep the molding from schlepping back down on the body.

I used thousands of the things to keep masked rubber windshield and other parts away from the sheet metal during paint jobs in order to lap the paint up under the molding... Handy little tools!

As to the Rhino paint job, it's the only substance we could think of that might hold that pathetic CRX body together for another year or two... But I'm not sure about the Amber Fire idea... I don't think Boo would be jealous... But my son is attached, and I wouldn't want to disrupt his relationship with the significant other... Give the boy an Amber Fire Rhino paint job, and every woman in town would be chasing him!

I'm not certain if the transfer case uses transmission fluid. They usually use some type of hypoid gear oil. Look in your owners manual for the weight and type of fluid. Hypoid usually runs fro 70-90 weight. In some construction machine they use 130.

Steve, Rick is insanely jealous regarding the quiet subtle color of my truck, as well as the fact that I live in the Northeast. The difference
between someone from the Northeast and someone from the Mid West is as follows:

If someone from the Northeast suddenly realizes a large large inheritance is bestowed upon them, they add a library room to their home. The person from the Mid West buys a pool table.

    Bookitty
  • iowabigguyiowabigguy Member Posts: 552
Now ya dun it. Slammed my midwest heritage. Well If I get bestowed I'm Gonna buy me a fancy trailer house and park it in your driveway. Me and the kids and the cousins and half of Iowa will be in your library getting edjukated and kultured. Thats while were not playing pool on the regulation pool table in the trailer (serves as a double bed at night dont cha know).
By the way that fancy trailer will be painted Amber Fire Pearl so it don't clash with your Quad.

    HI

I am new here. I am looking for a little advise on the 5.9 vs 4.7 engine. I am going to order a 2001 Quad Cab the first part of October, but am unsure of what engine to get. I have test drove both the 5.9 and 4.7 and driving down the road feel about the same. I pull both a 18 foot boat and 18 camp trailer here in Montana in the bitteroot mountains. I am not sure what the pulling power difference would be. Does anyone have any suggestions? Please. Also, does anyone have a 5.9 that could tell me there gas mileage. I see alot of responses on the 4.7, but hardly anything on the 5.9. Thanks for the help.
  • towcrazy2towcrazy2 Member Posts: 337
For what it's worth, I have a '00 QC 4X4, 5.9, auto, and selected that engine/tranny combo specifically because of towing requirements. At least once or twice each year, I have to head south from Mich., through the Smokies, pulling a 5,000 lb. enclosed trailer with all the aerodynamic qualities of a barn door.

The 5.9/auto worked well in my '95 SB Ram, so I decided to stick with it in the QC.

HOWEVER! Without a trailer in tow, even if you're light-of-foot (as I am), don't expect much more than 13-13.2 mpg (combined city/highway). If you enjoy goosing it, look for around 12.5. With trailer in tow, look for something in the 10's.

I've heard a lot of good things here about the 4.7 with dual-range (2nd) auto, and you might give it some serious consideration. It all depends on your GCW.

I've been insanely jealous of the mileage numbers some of the 4.7 guys have been posting here! On the other hand, when the fellow at the local filling station sees me coming, he's all smiles and I get free coffee!!!
  • bookittybookitty Member Posts: 1,303
Rick, what's this about heritage? Your heritage is
New Yawk as you know. And as for your Amber Fire trailer, let me know how long an extension cord you have so that I may wire a box within reach. We aim to please.

Anybody who has the gull wing tonneau, what is
    your opinion of it?

I have the Gull wing and like it a lot. Of course I'm using my bed more as a large Trunk than a bed. Removing it is possible but would be a two man job. Only 4 bolts hold it on, that's the easy part, the weight is where the help comes in.

    Waterproof?

As far as I could tell, no apparent leaks, at least nothing noticeable.

    Heavy duty??

Heavy fiber glass, will definitely not sag due to snow, not sure if I would walk across it even though it looks like it would hold me.

    How much did you pay?

Hard to say, I worked it in with the entire deal as a package. (See post 481) Figure on list,

    Dealer installed?

YES! 2 hours labor, Salesmen tried to convince me it would take 6. I checked myself with service and got the 2 hour quote.

Does anybody know if you can get it in Amber Fire??

You can get it color matched for any color MOPAR has.

Does anyone here have the Full time 4WD?
If so, what are your opinions on it?

I know I don't need 4wd all the time, as about 60% of my driving is on road, but, the cost of getting the full time 4wd is fairly minimal on the Quad, so I am considering going that way.

If anyone has an opinion on this, please make yourselves heard.

    Thanks

Bookitty- The very next thing I did after seeing the fluid was check the manual. It says the transfer case takes Dextron or Mopar transmission fluid. Alot of the newer vehicles with closer tolerances use the thinner fluid. Thanks and I'll let you know next week.
  • bookittybookitty Member Posts: 1,303
Allen, if you have not placed the order, you might want to consider the 5X9 mirror (very little price differential over powered standard sized mirrors), but helpful when towing. If you are not going to tow on a steady basis, or are towing a lighter load, you may want to have the 3.55 differential ratio, which will be more economical to operate (and reduce MRSP price by $40.00). Just my $.02 for what it's worth.

Unless there is a reason to buy from your hometown dealer I really believe you could probably save yourself a bunch of money. How much? Well when I ordered my truck I used the invoice prices from Edmunds. I was not charged anything for advertising. I was able to order at invoice and I didn't have to put a deposit down (I have bought several vehicles in the past so this might be why they didn't require deposit). The only charges other than what were on the truck I put together using the specifications from 4adodge site was the $20 owner loyalty mailing, a fee for doing the leg work for title and plates($47) and for 7 gallons of gas (tank was full when delivered). My brother was in Europe with the Army when the Intrepid first came out and ordered on through this dealer for invoice even though a lot of dealers were charging more because of the newness of the Intrepid. He flew into Omaha with his family and then drove to Washington DC where he was stationed.
Also for your info the 4adodge site now has 2001 pricing as of last night. Rick

I've read all the Dakota posts, but most seem to be based on other vehicles, and prior experiences.

I was just curious if anyone here had chosen the fulltime, and had had some experience with it on the Quad now.

Most likely I will stay with a part time.

Okay - made my usual Friday call to D/C customer service and was told (by the best rep yet) that my quad was on a railcar. It left Michigan on 9/16 via "Allied Systems". He gave me a rail car number but I cannot seeem to find a URL for Allied Systems, Ltd. to track this puppy online. Rep said it usually take 3 weeks and I should see the truck at my dealership in so. calif around first week of October (end of). Anybody have a URL for this transport company? Rep had one for Union Pacific but that doesn't me no kind of good. Thanks in advance if you can post or send me a URL for these guys.

The full name of the topic with the discussions was "Dodge Dakota--II." I found it by going to the active "Dodge Dakota IV" and tracing it backwards.

Iowa--you're probably right, but it's partly a home-town loyalty thing, partly the ability to have a guaranteed support base for the quad over the years. Also, I initially made a commitment to the invoice + 2% concept; the dealer kept his end of the bargain, so I'll keep mine. It seems that in recent months DC has added the advertising to the invoice. I didn't anticipate that happening. The agency that places orders from overseas isn't worth talking about--they quoted a price of over $29K for a fully-loaded 4x4 including auto.

Soon, very, soon (picture fingers crossed here). DC Cust. Serv. states my rig is in production. god, I was worried enough when they told me it was going to be built on Monday, but now it's a Friday truck. I don't know which is worse. The good news is I live close enough(Northern IL)to the Warren plant to warrent it being shipped by truck. Yeah, no rail dust! now I can get rid of the pile of parts my boss has been complaining about in the corner of the warehouse (wheels, tires, brush guard, KC lites)and waste my lunch hour whenching.

Personal opinion only... I think that full-time four-wheel drive is GREAT!... for soccer moms.

I don't mean that in a nasty or sexist way... In fact, F-T 4X4 can be perfect for someone who can't be bothered by pulling a lever or pushing a button to engage, or who's not certain of when they SHOULD engage it. But it does come at a price: Purchase price, mileage, potential maintenance/repairs are most often mentioned.

Dakota's FT 4X4 is an adaptation from Jeep, which offers THREE flavors of 4X on its Cherokee model. If someone who may not recognize when they "should" and when they "shouldn't" engage is going to drive the truck, it could actually SAVE on maintenance/repairs.

I think that most folks who've driven the 4X's would agree, though, that the part-time manual engage is the way to go... When combined with the LSD, it's pretty tough to get stuck!
  • bitterooterbitterooter Member Posts: 5
Thank you for your response. It is hard to find someone with the 5.9 and ask about the fuel mileage. If I may ask one more question, do you feel there is a big power difference between the 4.7 and 5.9 when it comes to pulling. That may be a tough question if you have not driven them both I know. Just not sure if you have driven them both or not.
  • bookittybookitty Member Posts: 1,303
Cowtown, lubricants usually have a specification number such as an MILO spec along with a rating for application (gas, diesel, differential etc.) printed on the label. If you cannot match the specification, the supplier or the lubricant manufacturer should be able to do so. Most if not all lubricant manufacturers promote their product as meeting and/or exceeding warranty demands. I believe that Jack (themacguy) could offer pertinent, intelligent and comprehensive information regarding this subject. You may also be able to look at a container of the
fluid at the dealership to note and copy the specifications on the label. Hope that this helps.

    Bookitty
  • towcrazy2towcrazy2 Member Posts: 337
COWTOWN -- Wish I could give you some specs on the synthetic rear diff fluid, but I can't. When I switched to synth. I bit the bullet ($30 fluid, $40 labor), had it done at the dealership, and sacrificed what's probably a $25-$30 savings in going with an independent shop. I would defer to Boo on this one, and proceed per his recommendation.

As to a Synthetic for the front diff, I guess my question would be "why?" I've never switched to synth up front, since I can recall only two instances when I needed 4WD while towing. Switching fluid up front would probably be a good idea if you anticipate some heavy duty towing in 4WD... But again, I couldn't offer a qualified suggestion.

BITTEROOTER -- As to the 4.7 vs. 5.9 for towing applications, here again I can't offer any experience-based suggestions. I've driven the 4.7, but have not towed with it.

The 4.7 engine/tranny combo is VERY smooth, and were it not for the fact that I towed and enclosed 5,000 lb trailer with the 5.9 in my '95 Ram, I might have gone with the new engine. Alas, I copped out to the 5.9 and "old" auto tranny simply because through my experience, it was a "known and proven entity."

EITHER way, I think you'll be pleased with the performance of this truck.
  • stnickstnick Member Posts: 177
BITTEROOTER, Here is my .02 cents worth. Just towed with my quad for the 1st time this last weekend. I have 00 4.7l auto 3.55 lsd. now with 5100 on OD. Had to tow a 2800 lb toyota on a 2 wheel car trailer, total aprox 3000 lbs from near St. Louis, Mo to Lincoln Ne. About 450 miles. I thought I might have to keep out of overdrive all the way, but was not a problem. I seemed to have plenty of power. Ran 60 to 65 mph most of the time. Weather not too good. Side , then head winds, 20-25 mph, at 1st temps in 70s, by trips end upper 40's. Milage averaged 14.3 on complete trip, better than I expected. Its fairly hilly in parts of Mo, and tranny kicked out of OD at times but only on the higher hills. I was pleased over all. Also, not towing, I am getting 16.5 to 17.5 city hwy. steadily. Hope this helps. Nick

Funny thing!! When I called DC on Tuesday, last week, to check on my truck they told me it probably wouldn't hit the rails until Friday. I would wait patiently. Well, I called on Thursday because I couldn't wait. It turns out my truck actually did ship on Tuesday. It arrived in Rolla CO. this morning (Sunday) My dealer said it would probably take a week for the truck to travel the 60 miles down to Colorado Springs. I hope it doesn't.

Is it possible to find out when it gets put onto a truck carrier? Will the railrod folks have the info. on that? It's getting close!!

Towcrazy2 or any one who has the fold-a-cover. I picked my truck up yesterday and the dealer ship installed it but they messed it up some how. Is there not a rail that goes on top of the tailgate?
If not how is it supposed to lock the tailgate?

They left off the second lock and since the service department is not open on Saturdays I will have to take it up with them Monday or when I can get back to the dealer. I had them write it up in the paper work. But I want to know what is right before I go back with it. So please help if you can.
  • towcrazy2towcrazy2 Member Posts: 337
GAQUAD -- There are mounting rails for the fold-a-cover running along the top SIDE rails on the truck, but there is not a mounting rail on the tailgate.

If the locking ear has been properly installed in the inside of the tailgate, then the rear section of the f-of-c can be locked down (latch slips under the tailgate ear). HOWEVER, the cover does nothing to lock the tailgate itself closed.

Best and quickest shot at locking the tailgate closed is with an aftermarket locks (P-n-Lock, SureLock, etc.).

    moparpower1,

Unfortunately, I cannot directly answer your question about what muffler offers direct replacement. But, I can tell you it's going to be tough to remove pipe from both ends of your existing muffler so you can slip another in.

When I had cat-back duals put on my '01 QC, I asked the muffler shop to save the stock cat-back exhaust because I may reuse it in the future. It took two guys 15 - 20 minutes of heating and beating to separate the one joint just behind the cat. They removed my exhaust in one piece.

Not saying it can't be done, just that the crimps put in the pipes by the muffler clamps really deform the pipe.

Good luck and please post what you end up doing.
