How reliable is Auto Express? I'm still not convinced. Didn't the R2 make production already, with that new corporate face?

They seem not to know that. If we know more than they do, how accurate could that report be?

Yeah, Juice, 75w80 gear oil in the rear (not sure about the gearbox, though, as I have a 4EAT). I used Mobil1 with good results. I think the rear holds 1.8 quarts.

  • jlemolejlemole Member Posts: 345
By the way, don't drop the little blue Mobil1 cap into the rear diffy like I did recently. If you do, you better have a set of chopsticks lying about the house :-)

    Jon
  • paisanpaisan Member Posts: 21,181
Holds .9quarts. just shy of a full quart so you can squeeze it in.

  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
What about the MT, mike? 4 quarts or so? I'll probaly buy 6 to be safe.

    -juice
  • paisanpaisan Member Posts: 21,181
    is 3.7

Usually if you use 5 quarts you can get the job done on both front and rear. We buy a 4quart jug for the front and 2 quarts for the rear (usually have most of the 2nd one left over) So yeah 6 quarts is right on the money for a DIY project.

On the AT i've been getting about 4.5-5quarts out of the pan when doing a drain-fill.

    At least 2nd or 3rd I hope....
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
On technical merit it would be at or near the top, but of course we haven't seen pricing or content levels yet.

The Legacy isn't even in there and the Korean ones are. Is that good or bad? The L SE should have done well.
  • lucien2lucien2 Member Posts: 2,984
Subaru is going to submit a lame duck underpowered contender with the launch of the new one right around the corner.
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Yeah, Edmunds surely knew it was an outgoing model and passed. That's why they included the Malibu and not the Grand Am, which I think sells more.

Legacy 6 sports-sedan on final approach
    -------------------------------------------------
Waiting for Subaru to build its version of a Falcon XR6? Well you won’t have to wait too much longer. The Legacy 3.0R, powered by the same 182kW 3.0 litre boxer six as the newly arrived Outback, has just gone on sale in Europe, and is expected to arrive in New Zealand showrooms in April. However, those wanting a manual gearbox will have to wait a bit longer, as three-pedal versions of the 3.0R won’t arrive until 2005. A five-speed automatic gearbox will be the only transmission choice in the interim.

Given that the 3.0R automatic version of the Outback sells for $59,990, and Subaru usually charges a $2000 premium for the higher-riding large Subaru, we’d expect the Legacy 3.0R to cost $57,990 in automatic form. The car uses a similar chassis set-up to the turbocharged Legacy GT, with quality Bilstein dampers, 215/45ZR17 tyres and a lower ride height.

Brit journos have been fulsome in their praise of the newest Legacy, with one comparing it to the BMW 3 Series and Audi A4, and hailing it as “the best-balanced car in its class”.

So it sounds like an H-6 with a manual tranny may be in the works, but arriving late (as in a year or so)

Finally. I wonder if it'll get the STi 6 speed. The Forester XT got hardened gears.

an exerpt from an article on job outlooks, posted on the Lafayette Journal and Courier website today:

Job outlook for early '04 not very promising

By Max Showalter, Journal and Courier

... Employment levels will increase during the first quarter of the new year at Subaru of Indiana Automotive Inc., which has issued recall notices to some associates who were laid off from their jobs earlier in the year.

"SIA is very pleased to be recalling an additional 103 associates in preparation for the launch of our exciting new model Subaru Legacy in MARCH OF 2004," said Tom Easterday, vice president of human resources and corporate affairs at the Lafayette plant.

The workers will return in January and February. ...

Launch in March, eh? But do they mean on the assembly line, or for sale in dealerships?

I guess training won't take 2 full months, so maybe it'll be here sooner than we thought.

  • robr2robr2 Member Posts: 8,805
Typically it takes a couple of months to manufacture and stockpile then distribute enough vehicles so that every dealer has a few on hand for the actual launch. So March launch would dictate Janauary startup.
  • bigelmbigelm Member Posts: 995
  • trueawdtrueawd Member Posts: 64
They start full production in March, with the launch being the 2nd to 3rd week in May. It does take a couple of Months to get up and running to make sure at the end of May they have cars to go with the advertising, etc.... I heard this info from my local dealer, who stated he got the info from his rep. Can't wait!!
  • kenskens Member Posts: 5,869
Sweet. May would make it 6 years to the date since I bought my Forester. I can get used to a 6-year cycle!

    i can;t wait.

very confused as to whether to pick legacy turbo or OB H6............never confused before since subaru never offered choices like these
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
I'm so much worse, I can't decide between an XT, Legacy GT Turbo, OB H6 Sportshift, or the 7 seater, and I haven't even seen two of those!

Let's toss in the B9 Scrambler just for good measure. My Miata needs a new top, that's $800 or so I didn't really want to spend.

I've never gone near 6 years on one vehicle! I think I've only hit 3 years once.

If I buy a new Legacy though, I'd hope to keep it that long.

I've gone the gamut from trading after 10 months to keeping for 8 years. I sincerely hope that the FXT falls into the later category!

We're fairly consistent, at least with new cars.

I had my Escort for 7 years, the Forester for a little over 5. I plan to keep it until the 7 seater comes out (so I can at least see it), which works out to about 7 years.

Wife's first new car was her 626, which she also kept for 7 years. Her Legacy has a 7/100 warranty, so the plan is...you guessed it, 7 years.

    Guess that's our cycle.

I will get the legacy GT to replace my OB

Then, get the 7-seater to replace my 02 MPV(wasted my money on this)
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Funny thing is, I'm so attached to Sandy, I'm not sure I could let her go.

It may depend on what we get. If we get an XT, then sure, I'll give her up.

But if we get a 2005 Legacy or Outback, I may convince my wife to trade in her car. It's worth more, and I'm a lot more attached to Sandy than she is to Lucky.

The big question is what if we get the 7 seater? That would be the weekend car, so whichever one we kept would be my wife's car to commute with. So I'd have to give her Sandy, or sell it, either way she would not be my primary vehicle any longer. :-(

Supposedly their will be....yes a Outback XT. Which should also be available in a 5 speed manual as well as the new 5 speed AT....Sweet!!
  • sube555lgtsube555lgt Member Posts: 78
A 240hp H6 with a 6MT would be tantylizing. Hmm, I wonder what you could do in NA form with that car. :D If tuned right.

The turbo 2.5 still pulls hard. I can't wait to see what they really do!
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Turbo 2.5 has a lot in common with the STi, so right there you could stick with factory parts and make 300hp. Supposedly they'll get 330hp from that engine soon. Imagine that!

H6 can't match that peak power but I bet it'll be smooth and quiet, with good throttle response. It might be a better match for the automatic.

have a feeling that OB turbo is 1 more year away so that they don;t steal thunder again from legacy this year

Wonder if the Outback will debut at Chicago?

    -juice
  • bigelmbigelm Member Posts: 995
Don't see why not if they're going to debut the Legacy Turbo... The Outback is the #1 selling vehicle for Subaru in the US, so I can't see them NOT wanting to attrac the masses...
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Well, the Legacy had been the neglected step child for far too long.

Outback does pay the bills, but it already has the public's attention. I'm sure it'll be marketed heavily.

Maybe they chose to debut the Legacy to get the attention of the media, which prefers the sportiest models?

    -juice
  • bigelmbigelm Member Posts: 995
I wouldn't doubt Subaru will spank the media with "Hey, as you see, we're back with our performance model. Oh, and of course, don't forget our utility model that has been underpowered but sold very well and now we're stepping up to impress you even more.."

Think I should be a spokesperson? LOL!

You are right...Legacy GT Sedan and Wagon in Detroit (Turbo..obviously) and Outback in Chicago and it will be in Turbo form (XT) too. Trust me, my friend at the dealership has almost always been very accurate. This gives people a choice of a H6 or and XT. There will those who will never understand the Turbo 4cyl and still want the H6 and it will have the same horsepower as the turbo, but much less tourque and we all know what that means...Turbo 0-60!!!! That will be for those who want the true performance to go against the Audi All Road, etc.... So Outback Turbo here we come and yes TRUE (bigelm)..all the utility of an Outback and the performance!!! A big spanking in Chi-Town! You should be a spokesperson. It will be the best of all worlds....Again I'm psyched!!!!

Subaru is expected to reveal the next-generation Legacy sedan and wagon models to North America for the first time at Detroit in January. Already on sale in Japan, the latest Subarus have new interior and exterior styling as well as longer wheelbases with larger wheels. The new chassis is more rigid, and there was considerable weight reduction for the new models. A multi-function display with a 7-inch LCD screen will be available, as will a DVD-based navigation system. In addition to the new models, Subaru will feature the B9 Scrambler in its North American debut. The sporty roadster concept features a hybrid powertrain and, of course, all-wheel drive.

Excerpt from a lengthy article about new models debuting next week in Detroit posted on MSN.com

ANybody else drooling over a new Legacy turbo wagon? Best of the XT and WRX: low-end grunt, with more overall power, more space, yet low to the ground, weighs about the same, and comes with updated suspension, brakes, steering...

My goodness, I need to start collecting more pennies...

    Now that's some protection!

Beanboy I know what you mean. I'm just waiting until the end of the year for mine or very early next year. Very similar reason for me wanting one.

I know mine will be turned into a monster of a machine though.

OMG! Those look like they belong on a Hummer or a freight train!

I'm right there with you Seth and Brian. I can hardly wait for my Turbo Legacy Wagon. I've even got all my pennies saved up. I think I'll be going for a little more plush than Seth (leather, that gorgeous huge moonroof, Macintosh audio...). I do hope he's willing to share his mod path though as I might be up for that a few years down the road. ;-)

I wonder where they mount those things. Maybe the tow hooks. They better be bolted down well--otherwise they'll just leave a nice inprint on your hood when you hit something. :()
