    Hmm, this may blunt some of the desire for an STI wagon. That 2.5 gt wagon will be a "super" wagon.

    Ken: told my wife about it, and she's with you, likes the idea of the 5 speed Sportshift.

    Ian: Legacy is not making a world debut at Detroit. Automotive News didn't even list it.

    We'll fill that gap, though. :-)

    Subaru has been talking about moving into the "premium" segment, so HID's and a Nav system should at least be options !

    The XT's 2.5T is wonderful, so I know the GT's engine will be great as well!! Hopefully, SoA is understating the hp by 15% on the GT too. ;-)

    So does no H6 in the Legacy mean it will be standard in the OB, with a 2.5T option? :-)

    I bet the XT is really 250HP, they're just being honest on the Legacy! We'll have to examine all the details to see how the motors differ. Subaru is going to have many iterations of the 2.5 if they're all different.

    Actual dyno tests on the XT seem to indicate about 240HP at the crank. I think the Legacy GT setup with larger intercooler will have some increase over the XT.

    What was the max boost on the XT? The GT is 13.5psi, IIRC.

    My gut agrees with Craig: I suspect that the Legacy GT and Forester XT engines are identical. Given that I see 2004-2005 setting up as a replay of 1999, when I chose the Forester over the GT on the basis of power-to-weight ratio, handling and ground clearance (just substitute 240/250 hp for 165 ;-)). Of course that would require my driving a GT to verify...

    But doggone it, why can't SoA get VTD and Sportshift into the Forester?

    So is the consensus really that the GT is targeted for the near-luxury market segment as Bob's comparison indicates? I think it will do extremely well against top end Accords, Camrys and Passats but taking on the 3-series, A4s and the like is going to be a lot tougher. In that case, HIDs, NAV systems, etc really are expected.

    I don't know Frank. I guess it depends on who's shopping. I know I'm going to choose it over the A4 and 3 series as those are cars I was considering. Of course for interior room both of those cars are really Impreza competitors.

    I'll take HID's and through in a McIntosh audio system. I guess I just haven't quite figured out what's up with all this hoopla over Nav.

    Looking at the press photos of the Pontiac Solstice as I write. It looks similar enough to the Subaru B9SC/Scrambler (in shape if not in details) that I have to wonder if the latter will make it to production as a badge-engineered Solstice. If that's the case, I'd hope that a "traditional" Subaru flat-four, AWD drivetrain would make it there as well.

    Look at some of the luxury features that other cars offer:

    1. power to rolldown windows after engine turn off.

    2. memory settings for seat, side mirrors, stearing etc. - on new acura TL

    3. Full size spare

    4. 4yr maintenance with warranty

    Us bumper requirements are different than they are for Europe, that is why the US bumpers are different.

    We'll see after it gets here and I have a chance to drive one. If I get it, it will get a Utec, DP, WI, Larger rims/tires, tints, CB, struts, springs, rear strut bar, sway bars, end links, HID driving lights, and that's about it. :)

    We made it. I'm in the hotel with Bob, waiting for the 6:45 dinner.

    FYI, the boost on the GT is indeed 13.5 like Ken mentioned. What is the XT? Where is that XT PDF again? Shoot, I have it printed out at work.

    Tranny ratios are different. The Legacy PDF does not mention HIDs or Navi, so who knows. We'll find out.

    Some cool notes I'll make: all models get side curtain air bags, EBD, aluminum hoods, aluminum gates on wagons, and GTs get vented rear discs 11.3" with single piston floating calipers and bigger front rotors - 12.3" with twin piston floating calipers.

    All that is from the PDF.

    Bob and I will go down the list of questions and try to answer them all. I have about 10-12 questions in my mind that I want answered.

    of the 4 features you listed. My dads chevy pickup has 3 of them. My Tahoe has others....

    other nifty things subaru doesn't have (at least on my 2001 OB Wagon)

    -Power mirrors also fold-in with a push of a button to help it fit in tight garages.
    -Radio also functions until door is opened.
    -ability to turn off daytime headlights.
    -instant fuel economy (or lackof :) ) info.
    -Heater controls that are variable between positions.
    -power adjustable gas/brake pedals with memory setting.
    -second row heat/AC ducts for second row (tahoe)
    -second row radio/CD/tape controls and headphone jacks (tahoe)
    -tailgate lifts or just open the glass. (tahoe)

    So not only 'not lux' but maybe even behind a chevy.

    Why are you comparing an SUV to a sport wagon? Alot of the features you list are just ones inherint to SUVs. As for the radio thing? It was super annoying in the $7K cavilier I drove as a rental.

    juice - The XT makes 11.6 psi's of boost according to Car and Driver. The GT is only 1 psi shy of the STi. :-)

    So, if the XT makes 11.6 psi of boost and its HP is understated by ~30hp.
    Is the GT REALLY making 250hp?

    Jay- You sure your OB doesn't have 2nd row ventilation ducts? The Forester has them running under the front seats.

    All Subarus have the rear seat heat ducts, not that they do a lot of good but they are there for what they are worth.

    No doubt that the GT shares the same longblock as the XT but we know for sure the intercooler is different and the turbo may be a different unit (we'll still have to see on this one). I guess it depends on what one calls the "engine" but I think the GT will have higher output as a result of these differences.

    Let's extrapolate, shall we?

    Forester XT, 11.3 psi, claimed 210hp

    Actual HP: 250

    WRX STi, 14.5 psi, 300hp

    So the Legacy splits the difference, actually closer to the STi. Let's call it 280hp.

    on a subie as sweet as this one is overall. No offense to you personally, but it is hard for us Legacy fans to finally get so much- big power, upgraded interior, cool guages, integrated turn signals, sweet sheetmetal- and have folks fret over the 5mph bumpers. It's not like it's an MG or an E30 325is. Now those cars clearly suffered the regulations.

    You ain't kidding! It would be one thing if Ms. Hill was an engineer or similar type wonk, unfamiliar with the public spotlight, but for a PR person to be constantly searching for words during an interview is ridiculous. Heck, even I could do a better job than that!

    It's almost 8pm PST now that would make it nearly 11pm in Detroit. Didn't they start dinner at like 6:30pm? That's one long dinner. Of course they did have quite a long list of questions. ;-)

    Hey Crew-delegates to Detroit! The one thing that has kept me out of a subaru is the lack of meaningful adjustment in the front passenger seat..my wife has chronic SI joint pain and wont last long in an uncomfortable seat. I see the new GT has 4 way power adjustable front PASSENGER seats.YAHOOOOOO! I need a report from the passenger seat before I put my deposit down at my local dealer. There's no mention in the reports thus far of recline in the rear seats of the wagon...get in back and play with those buttons, too!

    The new USDM transmission and final drive ratios are different from those published on the OZ and NZ sites...I am looking forward to drive reports on the two transmission options. It also looks like the GT Limited will be available with leather and moonroof, but with manual transmission standard for those who want it that way!
        I think SOA would be smarter-than-smart to get a first-drive report from bob and juice as a follow up to their trip to the NAIAS,complete with some slick pics, tie in the history of patti's "official"presence here, and put it on the SoA web site ....it would really scoop the car mags!
       The wait until June is going to be harder than the wait has been for the last 6 months, when I could calm myself down by reminding myself it was all speculation.
