Everytime I see this leatherette label I have to laugh, why don't they call a spade a spade instead of a shovel, leatherette has as much in common with a cow as a plastic bucket:-).

    I'm just the messenger!!

    juice,

The JDM models get two whites -- Satin White and Arctic White Pearl. It appears as though the US gets something in between -- Satin White Pearl.

robr, it comes from a really nice vinyl cowette though!

I forgot to enclose the quote in 12482 - that was by Pat.

"...it comes from a really nice vinyl cowette though" LOL - reminds me of the LeBra I had on my 87 Daytona Shelby Z. They kept saying it was better than other brands because it was made of naugahyde. I always wondered how many poor naugas had to die...

That was a hot car at the time. That was right about when I graduated from HS, and the Daytona was on top of my cool cars list.

Seth - Dave got a pic of the engine bay that we wanted, see if this helps:

reminds me of John Kennedy Toole's "Confederacy of Dunces."

Though I read it long ago, I reminder one of the characters talking about, or perhaps purchasing, some clothing that was "100% virgin polyester."

I agree there's more VW discussion here than on the VW site; I was looking there when my wife was considering a NB convertible.

I got the Shelby right after college. All my buddies had Mustang 5-O's and IROCs. 196 HP/212 lb-ft through the front wheels!! Just a touch of torque steer. Biggest POS I ever owned but it was fun. Flash Red was the color.
  • nematodenematode Member Posts: 448
The 7-passenger term is being used pretty liberally. It certainly does not refer to 7 adults.

You cant even sit 3 150-175lb adults across in the second row of the Highlander without feeling stuffed in there. The 3rd row may be alble to fit 2 children around 50lbs, provided they are flexable, have short limbs, and are really friendly.
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Subaru reps hinted it would be packaged more like the Ford Freestyle, which itself is based on the Ford 500. That gets a long wheelbase and IMO good packaging.

Honestly, very few SUVs can put adults comfortably in the 3rd row. Expedition is the only one I've tried that would. Even the huge Pathfinder Armada only has room for kids.

If they can match the Pilot, or even the MPV, I'd be impressed.

Just a touch of torque steer, boy thats an understatement:-) I remember taking out a Dodge Omni GLH, for a test drive, anyway I get the thing out on the road and floor it S.O.B headed straight for a wall the torque steer was so brutal.

A friend of mine had the Shelby Daytona and I remember having to drive him to the hospital in it. From what I remember the torque steer was as bad as the GLH.

yes, no SUV can comfortably seat or enter into 3rd row.

my MPV considerably smaller than Suvs, can confortably seat 3 adults for a long time
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
And the packaging in the MPV is a realistic goal for Subaru's 7 seater. Nothing cavernous, just reasonable space for all but large adults.

driving an 04 Sienna XLE AWD GK now. It really can hold 7 adults. 4 will be really comfortable 3 will has easy access to their seats but will be less comfortable. However, I should mention that the 3rd row seat in my Sienna is 48" across with another couple of inches on either side for elbows. I bet its about the same as the second row in the Highlander. I had 3 people back there 100-160lbs and it was OK but not great. I was the 160lbs :) and in the middle for a 20min trip. For that its fine but I would not want to ride back there for an hour or something like that.

I gave up on SUVs very quickly because the access to the 3rd row is horrible. Parents/grandparents find it very difficult to get back there.
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Even my dad's Land Cruiser had a tight back seat. I could only be there for a few minutes before I got uncomfy.

My younger brother must have been about 14 or so at the time and he fit OK, though.

at least 4 in comfort without going to a "minivan" platform. The SUV look with the bigger tires, ground clearance, and real 4WD hardware just takes up too much space to make entry/exit easy. Only the Yukon XL was OK for an SUV and that was only because it had big doors and the third row was quite large. I rented a while back it and drove it quite a bit. While MPG was not a primary concern, however, I just did not want to a rollling boat that gave me 11-13mpg 75% HIGHWAY with my driving to tow 1-2 times a year.
  • robr2robr2 Member Posts: 8,805
Yep - with enough gas you could change lanes in the Shelby.

re the Omni GLH - know what that stood for? Goes Like H...

On Topic - most 7 seaters in the SUV class are pretty bad in that back row IMHO.
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Well, keep in mind most SUVs have live axles they have to leave room for. That pumpkin has to bounce around. So the floors are taller, and usually they just slap a bench on that high floor. Just look at the Lexus GX470 to see what I mean.

Subaru's AWD and rear diffy are compact and much more space efficient. It'll be a bigger platform than the Outback, so I expect wheelbase will be in the 110-112" range.

Look at the Sienna AWD, Mazda also makes an AWD MPV in Japan (I think). Though the Toyota does give up the spare tire I heard.

I'm very much looking forward to see what kind of creative packaging Subaru comes up with.

The GLH was indeed a handful to drive. I remember reading in Car & driver that you needed to be a magician to drive it straight when you got on the gas. When I finally got to drive one many years later, it was even crazier than I anticipated. Honestly, that's the one car I know of where you need to choose your course and direction before stepping on the gas. Once you gun it, it's all about motion with little or no directional control.

Still, that was a pretty neat little car. Also a POS, but that can be said about all the Chryslers in the 80s....

I think the car that started it all was the Shelby Charger. Somehow, I think that would be a cool project car to stumble upon and restore. Later models were specialty built and numbered in Carrol Shelby's shop.

My college roommate had a Shadow ES turbo with the 2.2l turbo. They were fast but the clutch was stiff as a 911 and power was like an on/off switch.

I much prefered the '91 Escort GT I owned at the time (1.8l DOHC).

after last weeks 4" of snow and my wife having a hard time getting home in the Sienna, I dropped the "OBTW, Subaru is coming out with a 7 seater" hint. :)

  • nematodenematode Member Posts: 448
Your correct juice. They come with the run-flat Dunlops. Currently they are around $200 a piece to replace but the price has been dropping and I hope its closer to $100 when I have to replace mine.

I thought the 7-passenger was going to be more rugged and be able to tow, really go off road, and such things. Perhaps those were just rumors and its really going to be more of an Outback minivan. To be able to do the rugged, towing, hauling thing they are boing to have to beef eveything up which will take up space and get pretty heavy.

I cant complain about my Sienna XLE AWD in the snow. Its as good as my wifes 2k OB. Then again we have not has a ton of snow here. I had to go looking for it.
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
I think we'll see the first car based on the full-size platform. They hinted we'll eventually get a big sedan as a flagship, my guess is the 7 seater will share that bigger platform, and not the Outback's.

Subaru needs something bigger for folks like me to step up to. I just hope they offer a value-priced model, and don't make unnecessary things like leather standard.

I don't know though if those Shelby chargers would be worth much as a collectors item, there used to a low milage mint example here in Ottawa, but I havn't seen it in about a year.

As for the GLH I wouldn't have owned one of those things at any price, good car to killed in as the saying goes, all in all it was pretty crude.

      Cheers Pat.

Pardon my ignorance as I am a newcomer to the PR scene. Is it at the Chicago Show where we are supposed to get more detailed information on the '05 Outback? Do they normally offer availabilty timetables at these press conferences?

i know my sense of humor is a little off-kilter .. but i find this really funny .. if you go to the chicago auto show URL (http://www.chicagoautoshow.com/) there are live web cams set up for the show ... clicking on it for grins and expecting to see .. not yet available ... you get views of the empty hall .. lol .. so if anyone wants to WATCH them set up the show ....

zman: yes, Outback will get intro'd in Chicago. You'll usually hear estimates for arrivals and production dates, but those are subject to change.

Cool, Brenda and Papa Bear, nice to know we'll be represented there.

    More Rumors

No optional DVD navigation- SOA doesn't feel the pricing would be in line with what is offered from the aftermarket. Adding the extra expense and price to the vehicle wouldn't make it realistic within the market they want to target. Hence, the audio choices will pretty much remain the same except maybe for a few extra added speakers.

The point of added weight and government compliance also was reason for this decision-
"If the vehicle is over a certain weight a large tax penalty is imposed. Any accessory that is over 3 lbs and applied greater than 33% is subject to being applied against that weight. According to Government Regulations any product that would knowingly exceed that penetration rate can not be sold by the vehicle manufacturer."

Also, no Legacy wagon (or any model) rear seat reclining feature.

No long term plans at this time for 300hp or an H6 Legacy. Top of the line Outback models will get a 250hp H6, the GT and rest of Legacy line will continue with H4 ranging from the NA 168hp to the 250hp turbo.

An LL Bean version of the Forester will soon be added to the mix, exact engine choice is not known at this time but, it will not be an H6 as in the Outback models. Most likely the turbo H4 with a small bump in power.

The 7 passenger SUV is slated to have between 280hp and 300hp from the new 3.0 H6. Rumored seating arrangement is 2-2-3, which shocks me since I'd figure the back to be cramped in that configuration.

    Bye bye Baja! ('nuff said)

No Legacy pricing had been mentioned, the change is not expected to be more than a 5% increase from current prices. There's also the confirmation of FHI's new global badging initiative which would basically eliminate all model name badges from the car. The Pleiades on blue background and engine trim badges is all you're likely to see on the car.

So... it looks like the Baja may be dropped? And... another report of a LL Bean Forester!

  • rshollandrsholland Member Posts: 19,788
except Bajas, will get a $125 increase in MSRP this month.

Sheesh! LL Bean edition or not, I can't imagine the Forester needing a "bump in power". Maybe if the XT really did produce only 210 hp but not as it stands now. Any bump in HP and you might as well call it the STi edition :-)

I have to agree. I thought for sure it would be a 2-3-2 setup. If it is indeed a 2-2-3 setup, that means it will be a wide vehicle (remember the B11S concept is a wide vehicle), and that it could also be a 2-3-3 setup, making it an 8-passenger crossover.

I bet it will be as wide as the Pilot/MDX, if not wider.

    Bob
  • atlgaxtatlgaxt Member Posts: 501
If you think about it, the arrangement makes some sense and the vehicle would not have to be especially wide. You obviously don't want a bench seat up front, and if you can solve the packaging issues to comfortably seat 3 in the back without turning it into a mini-van, that would be a coup. Then you leave 2 in the middle to provide an adequate, usable pass through to the back without big minivan sliding doors.

Think a hopefully less obese Pacifica but instead of 2-2-2 you add one in the very back. I am still hoping for more of a SUV with at least 4,500 pounds of towing as compared to a minivan.
