Not only that, but on a Saturday, it took over a 1/2 hour to go from the NJ turnpike into Manhattan via the Lincoln Tunnel—and over an hour to drive 6 blocks to get out of Manhatten via the Lincoln Tunnel!

You should have parked in Newark (or farther south) and taken NJ Transit to Penn Station or parked in NJ and taken the ferry across to Manhattan. Live and learn. :-D

Just went to the autoshow today, stoped off at the Tribeca Experience first, of course. Boy, was the Tribeca nice, I wasn't expecting to fall for the car but I fell hard! It was quiet, comfortable, and had a feeling of security inside the cabin. The controls are thoughtfully laid out, user friendly for the most part; the navigation screen was a bit far forward in my opinion. The wrap around dash was absolute beautiful, so were the electoluminicent gauges. Plenty of space in the back seat, the front seats have alot of travel room, tight in the third row but then again I don't expect anyone to be back there for any extended amount of time, except maybe for kids no more than 4'5 (that's actually pushing it). The view out the windshield was clear, unobstructed. The view out the back was a different story, the rear hatch glass is too small, I couldn't see anything out the back, the glass definitly needs to be enlarged. The one thing that was cool and I thought it was a nice touch was the front reading lights are tied to the doom lights, door opens - front readings lights light up. 7 passengers, fully loaded with nav and rear entertainment center for MSRP $38K, not a bad deal at all in my opinion. This is definitly the next vehicle I would buy, after a few improvements by Subaru.

Edit: The B9 doesn't have frameless windows, they are fully framed, is Subaru hinting at a change that will affect the rest of the line up or is it just a Tribeca thing?

06 Forester, what can I say...Its interesting. I like the changes Subaru has made to the interior but I still think its lacking in certain areas. For instance, why can't the center armrest have the ability to pop up and forward like the one in the Hundai Tuscon? Why is there four cup holder for the rear passengers? two in the armrest lid and two in the traditional Forester rear cup holder location. I like the folding rear center arm rest, but I wish there could be a storage compartment there or move the rear cup holder there. I hope there is a change in seating fabric for 06, because the current moquette fabric isn't the best, it traps dust and pet hair and is hard to clean. I am kind of disappointed there wasn't a model we could actually access or at least one that wasn't on a turn table, where you could only look at it from three feet away.

the following is off topic, sort of, and certaining isn't a slyt at Subaru. I don't know if any one of you checked out the Hundai Tuscon, but it's giving people a lot of stuff for approximatly the same price as a Forester. I know it's probably not built as nice as a Subaru and will not score as highly in crash tests, but I think Hundai is posing a real challenge to Subaru. Subaru needs to improve its models quicker or it's going to loose its competitive edge, I think Subaru's competitive edge have already begun to erode. I know Subaru is a conservative company but in a time where every other manufacture is pushing the envelope and innovating, being conservative isn't the best route. By looking at other vehicles at the show I came away with a feeling that Subaru is still the manufacture of choice for me but at the same time I am awfully tempted by a few others because of either design or functionality features. The Legacy and Impreza redesign and the B9 are steps in the right direction but what about the Forester and the Baja (if it doesn't get killed off for the 07 model year)

    Bob and NJSwamp.

Parking at the NY show was ridiculous. The first lot I pulled into was $40, so I just pulled out again. Found one around the corner for $15. I figured the parking and tolls were as much as the tickets to the show, if I didn't have the Tribeca event tickets.

I was kind of disappointed that they only had the OB XT LTD at the show, and no Legacy GT LTD wagon to contrast. That was one of the reasons I had my wife go with me - to get her opinion on the two. She is not intersted in cars, so I have a hard time getting her to the dealer. I thought this would have been a good oppourtunity. At least she saw the Tribeca and said it was "interesting" :-).

I also expected to see the B9SC at the show again. When I was at my dealer Friday, they were showing a Tribeca book that also shows the next vehicles Subaru are working on. They said the B9SC should be out late 06/early 07. I thought for sure it would make an appearance at the NY show.

Mark- agree.... would have been nice to see the Legacy GT LTD wagon, but I was thrilled that they had the Outback 3.0R Sedan on hand- very sharp in RED. Its just a very different looking car, all jacked up but very elegant inside and out.

Interesting note about the SkyLofts event- If I understood correctly, Subaru actually rented the space from a woman who typically uses that area as her Yoga studio. If you noticed, there was a bedroom and living room area off to the left near the kitchen/bathroom. Smart woman, if you ask me, I bet she made out quite well, as did Subaru, not having to rent any type of official conference area.

Joe - I liked the color on the sedan, as well as the colors for the Tribeca. My wife actually liked the Blue of the Leg GT sedan on display.

As for the loft - my wife had asked about the place. One of the SOA people said it was a normal apartment they rented. Too bad Subaru couldn't do a Drive event nearby.

RIP unpainted cladding. That's one bummer, but I can see why they nixed it. I'll miss it, though.

Models - X, Premium/LL Bean, and XT Premium. Very stream lined.

Bob - check the packet I gave you, it has that info.

Ok, so Subaru continues to lag behind Honda, Toyota, Hyundai... the list goes on and on... in not offering side curtain airbags and stability control in a small SUV type thingy. Not good for a company which promotes itself through safety. I thought for sure this would be addressed in '06.

We got a little (emphasize little) bit more power. Again I hoped for more. Not having an extra gear stinks also.

But - can you get a sunroof and stickshift, or will Subaru force you to get the auto with the premium package? If you cannot get a stickshift on the Premium Package or LL Bean, that will really be a disappointment.

"Ok, so Subaru continues to lag behind Honda, Toyota, Hyundai... the list goes on and on... in not offering side curtain airbags and stability control in a small SUV type thingy."

I can understand not being able to offer VDC, but side curtains, it seems, shouldnt have required that much by way of design changes.... perhaps its more of a supplier issue?

Also- whats in store for the 2005 Impreza? Any ideas? The IIHS did not test it recently due to design modifications expected for next year.

Keep in mind that the Forester has already aced the side impact tests and is a top pick from the IIHS. In addition, the side airbag offers head protection (not all do apparently). So it's not like the car was especially lacking in side impact capability. I can see how side curtains would add some marketing clout, and they are certainly a beneficial device, but not critical on the current Forester in my opinion.

"Keep in mind that the Forester has already aced the side impact tests and is a top pick from the IIHS"

    Kinda.

Yes, the Forester with its front seat mounted bags does well, but what about the heads of the rear occupants? Are they not worthy of added protection?

FWIW, the Forester does not achieve the highest rating for Rear Head Protection (or Structure) and is also rated "Good" but NOT "Best Pick" (as are the side curtained RAV and CRV). So, the Forester is a "Best Pick" for frontal, but not side. You're right, its not lacking, but it isnt at the top of the class, and apparently, Subaru passed on the opportunity to hit that mark.

side curtains are useful in relatively minor collisions.

once you have chassis intrusion from a very heavy impact, I personally feel they are largely irrelevant as the small damage you suffer from glass (even your head going THROUGH glass) is pretty meaningless compared to potentially being crushed. only a well-engineered chassis will help you there, which Subaru apparently has covered well.

I bet they skipped on SAC because crash test scores were already good. They didn't see the need to improve.

I put kids back there so SAC would actually do nothing to help them. They're more for taller adults that would be at that level, and perhaps Subaru felt Forester seldom carries adults in the rear seat (and front passengers are protected).

One thing I forgot to mention was the new turn signals in the side mirrors, those looked pretty cool.

improve... eh, not sure about that. it's probably a value proposition like most things.

"what would it cost to implement, and what would we charge the consumer. would they pay this?"

    I wouldn't. ;)

I went to the Wakefield Subaru site and looked at the Tribeca. Now, I see what the collaboration between Subaru and Saab was all about. Subaru gave Saab the Impreza/WRX and Saab gave Subaru the Tribeca grille and hood.

i went there today. it was gone !!! now it is with another dealer which i don;t know. This must be the NE Subaru dealer association thing.
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Gone from Wakefield, you mean? I'm sure SoA got all over them. I bet they got a hold of a pre-production model and wanted customers to order theirs. I can't imagine it was being offered for sale.

Zapatinas came from Alfa, I doubt very seriously they saw that Saab before designing the Tribeca grille.

That would make sense for WRC purposes, they could use a smaller car.

But I don't care for the smiley face, looks too playful, more Korean than anything. Yellow one looks a bit better.

I'm sure they're just ideas at this point.

of the just released Euro-Civic, in that the rear door handles are up by the rear side window, which is also like Nissan SUVs. The net effect is that it looks more like a 2-door than a 4-door.

    this looks really nice.

and this looks believable as well. looks like following tribeca styling cues
  • sweet_subiesweet_subie Member Posts: 1,394
yes, they are NOT for test drive, not for sale.
only to see & book orders. do they think people are stupid to order without knowing the price ? this is sexy !
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
I like the profile, even the rear, but not that sagging bumper in the front.

Door handle in the C-pillar is OK as long as my daughter can reach it. ;-)

They are too blurry. I can only make out the headline text that basically says something to the extent of:

"News Scoop: The next generation Impreza drops the 4-door sedan style for a sports hatchback. How's the Mitsu Evo going to respond?"

HIDs on the XT, interesting. At first I thought it was an error, since they all get 4 projector beams now, but that says HID.

Keep in mind prices are higher there.

Diesels will be needed if Subaru plans on selling this in Europe, and elsewhere outside of North America.

4-5 years for alternative fuel powerplants. That somewhat confirms the Automobile blurb that Saab won't use the Tribeca as a base because it wasn't designed for a diesel variant NOW.
  • locke2clocke2c Member Posts: 5,038
actually I thought one of the most interesting things in that article is that Lance Armstrong is still under contract to endorse Subarus but is not expected to do any mainstream ads/campaigning. This is presumably because the "Driven By What's Inside" idiom that Lance was brought on to promote is now replaced by the uninspiring "Think.Feel.Drive" and no one has yet figured out how to make Lance fit into that.

Subaru now has what could easily be called their most competitive and compelling model lineup ever in the US market, and no clue how to market it.

That's the problem with hiring celebrity spokespeople for the long term. "Driven By What's Inside" was created around Armstrong. When it's time for a new slogan/marketing direction the spokesperson is paid to do nothing if still under contract. Further, with celebrity spokespeople a company runs the risk of said spokesperson doing something the company may not agree with. Although clauses are written into contracts and the parties can go their own way, there is always to possibility of lingering affects on either party's reputations.

Armstrong did go through a semi public divorce recently and is now involved with an entertainer (ie gone Hollywood), is currently being looked at for alleged steroid use, and pretty much has announced this year is it for him. I'm not saying these things have affected his reputation but some people may feel otherwise.

They have some great subaru radio spots up here. I was rolling the other day about the "Would you shave 1/2your face? Drink 1/2 your Beer? mow 1/2 the lawn? Then why drive with 1/2 the wheels your car has?"

yep, I agree. But IMO the diesels will also be needed in the USA in about 2 years. The new clean fuel and engine technology should make the emissions issue go away. The new diesels are not only better in performance, more efficient, but also quieter than their gasoline counterparts.

These new tongue-in-cheek ads seem like a new thing for Subaru.

I like the ads where the cars are tilting up more than I like the new tag line, at least.

Subaru sometimes surprises me with their ads, and thats good. One particularly risque ad that ran a few years ago for the last gen Outback was a simple picture of that vehicle with the statement: "Likes to be driven hard..... and put away wet".

I was so shocked I almost fell off the floor. ;)
