Well you know, SOA doesn't want to be responsible for people blowing their engines! You know the sue/liability crazy americans!

Sorry I don't buy it. This is a performance vehicle. I can see a rev-limiter on an OB, because of the speed rating of the tires. In fact the GT doesn't have one does it?
  • tincup47tincup47 Member Posts: 1,508
Have rev limiter's also. It's there to stop valve float if you over rev the engine. BMWs, Corvettes, Ferraris all have rev limiters. If they are vehicle speed limiters then they have a second function that would not be RPM related.
  • ramonramon Member Posts: 825
i got 2:08.xx on my second try!!! yee haaa!!! OK the site is down. =(
I am so tempted to trade in my OBS now. But I have put in so much love on my 99OBS. And trading in is so wrong. Oh well... I shall continue to putt putt around for the while and save money for the new WRX. wagon or sedan? I dunno.
  • lucien2lucien2 Member Posts: 2,984
I feel for you, droog. Hutch and Juice are gonna run off and get theirs anyway. I couldn't get to sleep last night, trying to run it all out in my head. You're right though, I'd take a bath on trade (5-year loan, doh!), and income around here is gonna be iffy for a while. I think I need to wait a while, dammit. DAMMIT! AAARGH! My dream car! :'(

    :-)
  • paisanpaisan Member Posts: 21,181
Are we talking about the same thing here? A rev limiter prevents you from blowing up the engine if you hold it at red-line too long. A speed limiter cuts the gas at a certain speed.

All cars produced and sold in the US have a speed limiter IIRC based on the speed rating of the tires that come standard from the factory. The SVX post '92 was limited to 135mph, all SUVs are around 112 or 115, etc. etc.

Speed limiters are easily overcome by popping out the meter fuse from the fuse panel. The computer will think you are doing zero!

  • lucien2lucien2 Member Posts: 2,984
M5's and 911's have rev limiters. All cars do now, to protect the engine. You can't possibly argue that revving a car past the redline is good for performance; 1/4 times drop of drastically when your engine leaps out of the hood, flies over the roof and shatters all over the pavement behind you.

The WRX has a SPEED limiter, holding it to 130mph.

Ash was definitely complaining about the 130MPH speed limiter, not the rev limiter.

A valid complaint, I might add. Probably there to keep insurance costs down. I'm sure it won't be 6 months before an inexpensive device is on the market to bypass it.

What? 130mph not fast enough for you guys? ;o)

I'll end up waiting for mine. Let initial demand subside, then get one for $22k or so. What a deal that would be.

  • ramonramon Member Posts: 825
not a matter of top speed.... it's a matter of how fast u get to that speed. ;-)
How often do you go past 100mph on public roads anyways? let alone 130mph?! I wouldn't risk it.

The BMW M5 has a variable rev limiter. It gives you a higher redline as the engine warms up (a bunch of LEDs mark the redline). Very nice! I know that AMG tuned MBzs, at the customer's request, can have their speed limiters bumped up to a maximum of 155 mph.

My ML doesn't have a speed limiter (apparently removed for MY2K), but a rev limiter only. There's actually no red line on the tach for some reason. In any case, the vehicle's aerodynamics (drag co-eff. of 0.39; one fo the lowest for an SUV) limit it to about 129 mph. There is a lower spoiler on my front bumper (I think it's called a diveplane) to reduce drag when cruising at highway speeds.
  • amishraamishra Member Posts: 367
Yes, I meant to complain about the maximum speed-limited. I'm sorry, but I've hit 200 kmh (125 mph) in my mx-6 many a time. If I'm spending 35,000 CDN on a new sports car, a speed-limit of 130 mph, is not going to please me very much...

There are a limited number of cars in the world which can reach that magical speed of 150 mph (think Corvette, 911). I really would have expected the new WRX to be capable of that off the lot.
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
It's not a GT, though, so high speeds are not it's primary mission. I'm sure it'll be geared short (final drive over 4 to 1) so the turbo spools up quickly.

The roads near you must have a lot less traffic than those near me!

Juice, this is Canada! We have 30 million people, and the second largest land mass in the the world.

LOTS and LOTS of near-empty roads outside of the cities.
  • paisanpaisan Member Posts: 21,181
90% of canada's population lives within an hour's drive of the US border!

  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Then what are you doin' on-line? Get out there and drive. And no excuse if it's snowing! ;o)

paisan: reminds me of Brazil. 90% of the population live on the coast.

suck! I hate canadian roads! It's all straight and boring. You would have to go way up north to find some country roads which are a bit windy.
Again, it's not a matter of how fast your car can go. It's how fast can it reach it! ;)
My mom's MX-6 is fast on the highway but on the streets, it's a clutz. yes it'a top of the line V6 with leather this and that. hehehehe
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
So Ash likes to drive fast, while ramon drives quickly.

I tend to prefer the quick route, since it also avoids trouble with the law.

MX-6 a clutz on the streets? We have that same V6 in our 626 and I almost feel it's the other way around. It's geared very high for quick get-a-ways in the city, but too high on the highway so the engine gets buzzy.

If you meant the handling, I agree. I've never driven a more nose-heavy car.

    -juice
  • amishraamishra Member Posts: 367
Hey ramon, you're right about the roads being mostly straight, that is horizontally. Most of the roads in northern Ontario are up and down some absolutely spectacular hills (how spectacular you ask? well my Outback of all things has literally flown for short periods of time :)

I wouldn't call a MX-6 a clutz on the streets. Like Juice said, it's geared highly - and the torque curve is pretty good (I have one too) It's got pretty nimble handling and a six-cylinder to boot. Back in the early 90s you'd be a fool to buy an integra or whatever, when you could get a Mazda with this engine in it for about the same price.
  • drew_drew_ Member Posts: 3,382
Funny, a friend of mine bought his MX-6 V6 (fully loaded with the manual tranny) over the Integra for the exact reason that you mentioned above.

WRX chat with two Mikes :-) in less than 2 hours time!

I meant handling. I have to say even the neon my ex if rented was more agile than the V6 mystery. But it does have good get up and go. the ram needle hovers at 4000rpm at just 120km/I!
I think the only relatively good road with fast sweepers is the Don Valley Parkway. But do not get caught in rush r. Well at least the scenery ain't that bad. =)
If you want good road close by I suggest Forks on the Credit. It is one very windy and hilly road. Just 40minutes north of Tor onto. Near orangeville. I brought 2 Impreza owners there once and they totally love it!
  • texsubarutexsubaru Member Posts: 242
Whoa, over $25K seems a little steep for an Eclipse, especially if it's not the convertible. I picked the Eclipse GT just because I know it's fairly popular and it seemed like a roughly comparable "pocket rocket" like the WRX (though only *roughly* comparable since it's a very cramped coupe, uses a 6-cyl. rather than turbo-4 and, of course, isn't AWD).
So, Colin, its what your in-laws drive? Somewhat an Eclipse GT just isn't what pops into mind when I think mother-in-law car! :)
  • kostamojen2kostamojen2 Member Posts: 284
Yup :) Notice I also spelled the name wrong... (I saw the episode when the Pah-Wraiths and Prophets faced off and imediatly took the name)

The chat was cool, but the guy typed too slow! ARG! Only like 40 questions made it... And he didnt have any info about pricing for the RS/TS/OBS model 2002 Imprezas :(

And in Australia/Japan/Europe, I believe the WRX speed limiter is set to 155... :(

Hey me too :-) Are you saying that you can read and write ancient Bajoran ;-)

WRT the chat, I believe it was actually a phone interview, so we have to thank the moderator for typing the questions and answers as best he could ;-).

Dana had her work cut out. She had to follow a very busy (with lots of static) chat room, relay the questions, and then post answers all simultaneously.

We'll have another chance on Thursday, but it will be an internal Crew chat. I'll probably host that chat, but last night scared me a bit!

I'm going to trade my 1998 Olds Intrigue in on a 2002 GT Sedan,I also own a 2000 GT, since Olds is being phased out by GM.

does anyone have concrete information on the engine offerings in the 2002 GT. Will it be a turbo,H6,and will VDC be offered.

    I'd appreciate the information.
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
    I think so. Right Drew?

We have our own first chat on Thursday, though I'm a bit scared of the piranha now!

  • paisanpaisan Member Posts: 21,181
I wouldn't count on the 2002 GT being anything more than the 2000/2001, If I had to guess, it may have the H6, likely not the VTD/VDC.

But a rumor we are hearing from isuzu is that we'll be getting the Isuzu Duramax 6.6l turbo Diesel and allison 5speed in the new Trooper which will be widened slightly and lengthened. Something along the lines of the Land Cruiser. :) 345hp of pure diesel torque!

    yummy

    -mike
  • drew_drew_ Member Posts: 3,382
I thought GM developed the engine with Isuzu's help? Is this correct? I ask since you refer to it as an Isuzu engine, but everything else I've seen says it's a GM engine designed with Isuzu's input.
  • locke2clocke2c Member Posts: 5,038
I think Mike has that part right, Isuzu designed it. They have a lot of OHC turbo diesel experience (mostly in medium duty trucks and semis NOT used in the US), whereas GM has none.

I seriously doubt the rumor about any North America Isuzu passenger vehicle with that engine. They offer nothing remotely the size necessary to deploy such an engine, and I don't see them breaking into the medium and heavy duty truck market anytime soon. I see no one contesting the big three's dominance there.

has just been introduced in Japan. This time there is a wagon too! The Blitzen, for those who don't know, is a hyper-performance Legacy co-designed/engineered with Porsche.

Ken, we could use your translation skills again.

PLEASE Subaru... bring this model stateside!

  • rshollandrsholland Member Posts: 19,788
I've read that the next generation Trooper and Rodeo will be co-designed with GM. Let's keep our fingers crossed. I very much doubt you'll see the 6.6L Isuzu-designed diesel in either of these vehicles. That is a heavy-duty commercial-use engine, used in GM's heavy-duty full-size pickups.

    Bob,

The B4 Blitzen, as you know, is a souped up Legacy with the help of Porsche Design.

The key features of this baby are on this page.

From top to bottom, they are:

    - 2.0 Twin stage turbo. The 4EAT gets a 260ps version while the 5MT gets a 280ps version.

    - Improved chassis (indicated in green) with a side frame sub-assembly (red).

    - 5MT models get a front helical LSD

    - Bilstein dampers

    - Sports shift for 4EAT models

    - Black face instrument panel

    - AWD: 4EAT gets VTD while 5MT gets viscous coupling

    Other features:
    - 215/45ZR17 Potenza RE010
    - HID lighting

    I want this car!!!!!!

    Ken
  • drew_drew_ Member Posts: 3,382
Hey, I saw those exact wheels on a BMW 323i yesterday, one reserved parking spot away from mine! Kind of surprised me since I expected the snow tires to remain on that car for another month and a half.

Wouldn't the Blitzen compete with the WRX though? Also, considering how few Legacy GTs there are around, I think that it's unlikely that the Blitzen will be brought over here. I wonder how Porsche would feel about it too? :-)

Am I the only one that doesn't like the Blitzen grill? It looks like it's missing something in the middle...the Subaru logo!

    Drew,

I don't know what the Blizten pricing is, but they're only selling 1,000 of them in 2001. My guess is the higher pricing and limited availability would keep it from hurting WRX sales.

Yes, the front grille does look pretty plain. In fact, I think that's the whole "look" of the car. It's got this minimalist and debadged look to it. I like it.

    Ken

  • rshollandrsholland Member Posts: 19,788
Thanks, as always, for the translation. :)

Agreed, I too want this car. And I also like the minimalist look—clearly a case where "LESS is definitely MORE."

I wouldn't be a bit surprised is we do get something here something like that down the road. Take the WRX engine, and combine it with the Blitzen styling cues, and you've got a real winner. Offer it in both 5-speed (6-speed from the STi better yet), and the Sport-Shift for automatic fans. Offer it for $30K. WOW!

    Bob
  • drew_drew_ Member Posts: 3,382
I like the look of the car (and wagon) except for the grill and the weird rear spoiler. I'd like the Subaru logo in the middle of the grill - I'm sure that can be added - and the standard rear spoiler.

"Minimalist" is correct. It doesn't even have the ubquitous lower spoiler foglamps! ;-)
