I was told flat out but not promised that it was likely that the GT would get a turbo. Either way, H6 or Turbo would be nice with the sport shifter.

They also changed the yellow for the 2003 WRX. It will be a brighter yellow than the pale pastel yellow from 2002. But there will only be 450 yellows available in the US. So get one while you can.

And yes, you are correct that the "Limited" badge will be removed from the car.

I'm glad about the new yellow. The old one was too pastel-like.

an Outback "Limited," or will that trim level have a new name?

OK, how do we know you are really Patti.

I have a test. What was the dance we showed you during a chat once, remember that virtual dance on the PC?

If she can't answer, it's not Patti. It's a Subaru Corporate Spy (SCS) merely posing as her! A-HA!

We will continue to find out info, no matter who is in the dungeon!

As Dan posted in the Baja thread talking about a dealer:
"Then again, they seemed to know less than I have found out online ..."

We need to plant a bug in the dungeon. I bet Subaru's crystal ball is in there.

Speaking of dungeons and the information spilled to condemn someone there... Does anyone know about the current $500 dealer incentive/rebate (for Legacys) and whether it will increase or disappear after April 30? I'm on the verge.
  • rshollandrsholland Member Posts: 19,788
I see Subaru is now offering 1.9% financing on all '02 Foresters, Legacys and Outbacks (excluding Outback Sports).

In other words, all the models that will be all-new or facelifted for MY03.

  • subypowersubypower Member Posts: 50
It's time to buy. In my experience, rebates or dealer incentives never get better than this with Subaru. Subaru always sells all of their cars becuase they don't overproduce like Ford or GM. So you will never see huge rebates like you do with the big 3. If you have a suby in mind, this month is as good a time as ever. You will still likely have your choice of colors and options. Good Luck!
  • hypovhypov Member Posts: 3,068
Out of the dungeon already?... :D

    -Dave
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Last year the incentives hit $750 for the Legacy. It just might increase because Legacy sales are down a bit. Forester sales are down but they don't have much inventory left so I do not expect rebates. Impreza sales are strong so no rebates are likely there, either.

It's always a gamble. Play it safe, buy now for $500 of. Or wait and risk it, maybe get $750 off, or maybe nothing. Then again you could buy a 2003 if the price doesn't go up much, it should have more standard content and better resale down the road.

Thanks for the inputs. I bit the bullet and ordered a 2002 Legacy GT Limited. As equipped, MSRP $26,590, Purchased at $23,804 reflecting $500 incentive. Not bad, not great.

It was an interesting experience though. I sent e-mails to about a dozen dealers with my specifications. I requested quotes, saying that the bid with the lowest price under $24K would get my business. Four or five responded, with the lowest at $23,637. I paid a couple of extra bucks to keep the business local.

I'd recommend this technique to anyone contemplating a future purchase. It required only a few clarifying phone calls, but was quick and easy. Most respondees had dedicated "Internet" sales people.

Know anyone interested in a cherry 1996 Legacy 2.5 GT in the NY Metro area? It's now in the newspapers for $8,995 with 69K.

    what color is the 2.5GT?
    5MT?
    I'm tempted.

    paisan:

The GT is Forest Green. I don't recall the exact Subaru name for the color.
  • paisanpaisan Member Posts: 21,181
Same color as my dad's '97Legacy L, my '97 Rodeo I used to have, and my uncles '97 Outback.

    Is it 5-speed or AT?

    -mike
  • blaneblane Member Posts: 2,017
    Paisan:

Yup, it's a beautiful rich green, especially since it was detailed this week. Its got a slushbox and is in Rockland, if you know of anyone who might be interested in talking.
  • paisanpaisan Member Posts: 21,181
If it were a 5-speed, I'd be highly interested. But someone in my family may be interested.

I got this email from Pete Mastro in Tampa; not much news but interesting:
    << Hello everyone,
This is the first update on the Sti.
I was in Miami yesterday for training on the 03 Forester. In my group we had alot
of Subaru Reps and upper management people going thru the same training as well
as the regional trainer. I asked him about the Sti during lunch.
His comments were that Mitsubishi and Subaru are playing alittle game with each other.
Mitsubishi knows Subaru will launch the Sti as soon as they launch the Evo VII. So they
are waffling abit on release date now as well as being very vague on pricing. I saw the
same article as all of you in Sports Compact Car. He says he heard Evo Vll will be in
the middle to upper 30s. This is all comments from our regional trainer. He told me he
feels the Sti is ready to go soon as Mitsubishi launches the Evo. We will see what happens.
I hope to have a bigger update in May when I go to the Dealer Meeting. I thought you all would
enjoy hearing about the game playing between the 2.
    Talk to you soon,
    Pete >>
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Both models already exist in other markets, though, so the only game playing would be on pricing and equipment levels.

There's a catch though-- no trim of the STi is as expensive as the Lancer Evolution AFAIK. Not surprising given that no trim of the STi has active differentials and they're not cheap.

It's gonna be funny to see Mitsu dealers selling a car with such a huge gap in pricing and power. You want more power? OK, double the price.

I'll boldly predict that it will cause more regular WRX sales, for people looking for a still reasonably priced middle ground. Plus it raises rally awareness.

The March Automobile Magazine has a comaprison of the STI and the EVO. If I remember correctly, the STI lists @$30K, the EVO for $37K. I have to "borrow" my co-workers copy for the details.

Unfortunately, no one knows what the US specs on either one will be so it's kinda a mute point at this point in time, IMHO.

  • locke2clocke2c Member Posts: 5,038
I wouldn't worry too much, KenS could just float over to the japanese sites and tell us what they cost. The yen has taken a tumble lately, so don't even expect to buy the cars at what their price in yen directly equates to in US dollars...

    -Colin
  • kenskens Member Posts: 5,869
Well, at today's exchange rate of about 1USD=130 JPY, the base prices of each vehicle are:

    EVO VII: $25,385
    STi: $22,269

Note that the EVO VII comes with the 5-speed auto.

    Ken
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Add 30%, because they usually try to be prepared for an exchange rate of 100:1. So $29k for the STi and $33k for the EVO are my guesses.

  • hypovhypov Member Posts: 3,068
Sti comes with 6MT, no AT.

I noticed the WRX in Japan are putting out ~247hp and ~245 lbs/ft torque. Could I have that for MY '03 (in Euro Style please) =D

    -Dave
  • lucien2lucien2 Member Posts: 2,984
I was talking about the STi/EVO thing with a friend, and we came up with this scenario on our own- namely that Subaru doesn't want the thunder of the STi release stolen by EVO and vice versa.
  • hypovhypov Member Posts: 3,068
if the EVO debutes for MY 2003 today, then the STi is here tomorrow. That's good =D

    -Dave
  • paisanpaisan Member Posts: 21,181
Since the pent up people waiting for an EVO may just turn around and get a WRX, subaru can afford to wait for the EVO release then offer a higher powered cheaper STI. :)

    -mike
  • lucien2lucien2 Member Posts: 2,984
I'd say get the STi out first. It really took a pounding in that STi/Evo VII comparo. Get out there now and grab the sales, then get to work on improving the things mentioned in the article. hit the Evo with a Version VIII the next year.
  • hypovhypov Member Posts: 3,068
to take the wind out of EVO's debute.
Bring in the MY 2003 WRX (regular) with the STi's 280hp power plant for MY 2002 price.
Power for power @ ~$25k:~$35k ratio, which would you buy?

    -Dave
  • kenskens Member Posts: 5,869
The one thing that stuck out to me on the article was how Automobile highlighted the difference in AWD systems. They nailed the one major item that Subaru probably needs to (or already is) figure out -- how to mate a manual tranny to their VTD system.

Doesn't the 03 GT wagon have 2 sunroofs or it's back to one? I hate the 2 sunroof system, can't open one without opening the other
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
GT wagons have 2, sedans have 1.

I like 'em because people in the back seat are also served, your kids will love it. It's very unselfish.

It would probably be helpful then, to have 2 buttons, to control each, as oppose to one
  • goldencouple1goldencouple1 Member Posts: 209
I was perusing Road & Track and it had a little blurb about Porsche Cayenne and a feature on sport wagons in which the WRX wagon was reviewed. I was immediately struck by how much Cayenne looked like a WRX wagon. I'm sure there's a size difference, but the lines and proportions were very similar in my eyes.

Porsche knows a good thing when they see it, LOL!

OK, now that my wife's driving needs have been met for the next 7 years or more, I get to start asking for things on my next dream car!

You guys didn't actually think I'd give you a break, did you? LOL

So, give us a new SVX! C'mon, a 2 door WRX with a moonroof, you have all the hardware. Better yet, make it a roadster and it'll replace my Miata. Lose the back seat and make it light!

If Subaru doesn't go in that direction, I'll be shopping a Forester turbo. Or WRX wagon. Or sedan. Or Blitzen. Or Avignon. I can't decide.

But the point is - bring them all so we have all those fine choices!

    -juice

PS Bob - you'd be proud to know my salesman (Maurice) took the time to explain to me, in detail, the towing capacities, payload, and roof rack capacities

did you get it from the White Flint location or Gaithersburg location?

What does everyone thinks of the Baja. I like it other than the Outback origin with all that plastic stuff. Of course I am being a 01" Legacy GT owner, my view maybe a little bit one sided :)
Rather would like to see a GT with the open back bed.
  • rshollandrsholland Member Posts: 19,788
We've got a Baja topic here, where most of us have commented on the Baja at one time or another. You may want to start at the beginning. That's when it was hotly discussed.
