Car Audio Help

I need some help.
Whenever i increase the volume of my car's audio to 50% or more, the quality starts to degrade. Especially when something with heavy bass plays.
I don't want to go spend money on new speakers only having to find that the head unit is the culprit and i needed to buy and amp. Same with installing an amp only to find that it was the speakers that degraded and needed to be replaced.
So before i pay someone money, i thought i would ask for some free advice and hopefully save some money to use on increasing the budget for whatever it is i need to replace/upgrade.

Much appreciated

What he said. Until we know what you have, we can't make suggestions on what you might need.

One thing you can do to check for a damaged speaker - when it's at a level that's producing distorted sound, use the balance and fader controls to check each speaker to see which ones are the source of the distortion.
