I always find it fascinating to see British cars in period pictures like this from the 1950s/60s showing how they had market share in export markets in those years which disappeared a decade or so later. The other thing this pic shows nicely is the size disparity between import compacts and the domestic land yachts of the era.

The way most cars are parked, that must be a hospital for people with vision problems.

The British cars and the difference between the Beetle and 57 Buick caught my eye. Canada was more in tune with British exports, and cars like the Austin next to the Ford at right, and the Standard-based Triumph wagon street parked were much less common on the USDM.

61 Chevy 4 door HT (maybe a Bel Air? rare car - note it doesn't appear to have Impala rear lights) next to the Dodge, and a 51 Ford Victoria next to a Stude at lower center.

I had to look that up on Google maps, and the buildings are still there, on the corner of Columbus Ave and Lombard St. A few hippie vans in that shot, along with a first-gen Firebird convertible.

back end of a Volvo 145 wagon. and I get a rambler vibe for the car hiding behind the woody Ford wagon.

    1968 Ford Wagon.
  • tmarttmart Member Posts: 2,414

The red Ford wagon is a Country Squire.

  • explorerx4explorerx4 Member Posts: 20,977
Country Squire looks like it has an engine upgrade due to the badge on the front fender.

Yeah, the Country Squire is rocking either a 390 (most likely) or a 428.

I think behind the Squire might be a mid 60s Cortina, if it is CA would be the place to spot one - a few did trickle in to the USDM.

Fun how those wagons were seen as lame for the longest time, and are now considered cooler than many period cars. I like the hidden headlight Fords of the era too.

It looks like the Firebird is backing up to park in front of the VW van.

I don't think so, since it looks like there is a curb cut there to give entry to a parking area.

I prefer the '68 Country Squire to the '69. At the time I thought the '69 was cooler with its unique dashboard but it was a bit of a functional nightmare.

Oh Fin, I think you've done it again. I couldn't quite identify the car behind the Squire but as soon as I read your post it clicked. Strong work, my friend.

We had a pic from this spot at Broadway and Heather in Vancouver, August 1976 before, this is apparently an additional pic. Zooms a little blurry but ok enough to pick things out, a bit to see:

nice red Gremlin X (about a 75) on the curb behind a Yellow Z, hiding behind the baby blue square body ChevyC10. My yellow X had the same stripes. Very ratty 4 door Falcon behind a nice looking 65 (I think) Chevelle, probably an SS.

Behind the Falcon is a Gen 1 Honda Civic. My coworker had one when they were new. Loroked small to me at the time, and I drove a Scirocco.

A '70 or '71 Dodge C-body 2-dr HT, likely a Polara but could be a Monaco, between the C10 and the Civic. An early '70s Ford Cortina 2-door next to the Civic. Those were extremely troublesome compared to the previous version and were the last of the breed to be imported to N.A.. Further along, a '63 Pontiac Safari wagon with a '69 Olds Delta 88 2-door at the curb.

Parked at right to the right of the Squareback looks like a Triumph Herald convertible.

    @fintail,
I was trying to remember what that car was although I'd seen it on a Top Gear episode.

Fiat 124 spyder with a hardtop and an Alfa Spyder flanking a classic early 70s Japanese coupe in a period color. Not sure which model that one is though.

I can’t tell if the car between the two Italian roadsters is a Datsun or a Toyota. I see Cosby is playing in Tahoe.

The Japanese car is a Datsun 610 in a color that I think Datsun owned.

I used to own a '71 Fiat Spider (only Maserati spelled it with a "y".). The tin worn ate it.

In the main parking area a 91+ Caravan to the L of a 2 door Explorer, so early 90s.
  • stickguystickguy Member Posts: 53,868
I don't think that is a Tercel. First thought was a colt but slightly too angular. I believe that is a 1st gen Hyundai Excel.

The angular hatchback also makes me think Chevy Spectrum, that one appearing to lack composite lights making it 1985-86, Isuzu-based (I-Mark).

I believe the black sedan is a 1955 Mercury Meteor, a Canada-only model that was a retrimmed 1955 Ford.
