I have been negotiating for several months on a GLX Auto ESP wagon. My best offer is 28150 OTD (including the VCI incentive). WHat OTD prices has anyone bought this same wagon? I am trying to widdle the OTD price to 27500. Realistic? Any advice? Thanks.
  • vwguildvwguild Member Posts: 1,620
Well, given the fact that Invoice on the Passat GLX Wagon with ESP is $28,939.00 I don't know what to say...And, when you say OTD, are you implying that includes Tax & DMV?
  • patriciadsmithpatriciadsmith Member Posts: 8
Its me again.......Now I have have two different offers I'm considering on a 2003 GLX passat 4motion........a demo with 2000 miles with ESP walk out door price of $28,800 and a 0 miles with ESP walk out door price of $29,900......I don't really care if the car has miles on it or not........Is the demo enough of a deal? Don't know what to expect them to take off.....Thanks for your help.

Just placed my order for delivery this Saturday. GLS 1.8T sedan (Silverstone Gray) with automatic, leather package (gray), cold weather package, Monsoon, and Homelink.

    For reference:
    MSRP = $26,930
    Invoice = $24,579
    TMV = $24,595

My price = $24,215, plus tax and registration.

I charged a deposit of $500, and the entire balance will have VW's 1.9% financing for 60 months. Overall, I believe this is an outstanding deal on an excellent car. Any comments?

You got an excellent deal. Congratulations and enjoy!

ask dealer to throw in or sell cheap extended warranty on demo.
Demo cars are usually not properly broken-in and engine/transmission might have more problems.

is talking about a "Demo", as in driven by a Manager or Dealer Principal; not a car that has been used for Demo Drives!

  • vwguildvwguild Member Posts: 1,620
is a very broad term. But, having been in this business for awhile, it would be MOST unusual for a 4MO to have been out on, 200 Test Drives, at say 10 Miles or so each...

We just do not have that many 4MO Cars...Sedans or Wagons; so if this Dealer was trying to put this deal together for PS, and price was the Major issue, this would not be a bad option...

    Hope this helps...
  • krzysskrzyss Member Posts: 849
that because of rarity this car would have been bought before it could amass (get?) 2000 miles.
    Let's see what PS thinks.

I cannot imagine ANY car having 2000 on the clock that was not a Manager/Dealer Principal/Service Loaner. It just does not happen...
  • patriciadsmithpatriciadsmith Member Posts: 8
I didn't go with the demo (no matter what it had for mileage it was the WRONG COLOR!!!!!!) So, I got a brand new one(Black, gray interior with ESP)6 miles on it........I paid the $29,900 bottom line price and was quite happy to get it........qualified for the 1.9% financing with no down payment and drove it home Saturday (300 miles) in torrential rain.....it handled like a dream......I LOVE IT!!!!!!!!!!!! Thanks for all your opinions!

    Hi:

I'm considering switching from an Accord to a Passat (thoughts?).

Has anyone bough a GLX-tiptronic in NC for a good price they can share?

    Thanks!

Are you believe it?In China(P.R.China.).VW has a factory in Shanghai.they sold the passat V6(most of standard featrures is same as GLX V6 sell in USA.the price you will not believe.it is USD40,000.not including TAX.So all of you are lucky.
Honda Accord 2003 2.4 LX is sell as USD32,000.so,anybody give me a suggestion which car is more reasonable.

anyone know of a good price for a 2003 Passat GLS with leather, auto in Long Island, NY?
I got a quote of $24.9k with the above and moonsoon. It's definitely too much i think.
  • chiphoggechiphogge Member Posts: 4
I'm buying my first car and have decided on a Black 2003 Passat GLX with grey leather interior, 4Motion, and ESP. One quote I got was $30,500 cash + fees less a $3,000 down payment. But, I'm also planning on financing the rest at VW's 1.9% APR for 60 months, to produce a "total deferred price" of $33,233.

Is it realistic to expect to be able to negotiate down to the neighborhood of $29,500 cash (approximately 1.25% below invoice)? Am I correct that dealers get a 2% holdback fee from VW, giving them room to maneuver below invoice and still make a profit?
  • rbirns1rbirns1 Member Posts: 318
I took delivery 11 days ago of a GLS 1.8T sedan with leather, cold weather, monsoon, and homelink. Final price was $24,215 at Sovereign VW in Hicksville. My deal was posted on this thread early last week. Email me if you want more details.

    Hi all,

I just got back from the VW dealer in NoCal and I am close to puchasing a Passat GLS Wagon. I accessed the pricing page on the Edmunds website and everything matches against their invoice. Has any purchased a Passat acording to the Costco pricing plan? Can someone please provide insight and legitimacy on the following fees? Thanks!

Here are the paticulars of the deal:

    24,338 Invoice Amount
1,500 Profit (per the Costco agreement)
    575 Destination Charge (negotiable?)
    175 PDI (negotiable?)
150 Bay Area Association Fee (negotiable?)
142 Floor Plan Interest Reserve (???)
    25 Port Prep Fee (??)

    Any feedback would be appreciated!!

    Thx,

Many thanks. Sovereign VW is my next target, arm with your quote i am sure i can get a good deal similar to the one u got. thanks again.
  • dw28dw28 Member Posts: 5
all i can say is that u may have to haggle to get a better price than what the dealer quotes for a costco member. i was given $500 over invoice for an Accord in a costco-member-friendly dealer. I was able to get a better quote with another dealer without telling them i am a costco member. I'd imagine it works the same with VW dealers. Frankly, as a costco fan, i was a bit disappointed. so don't think u r getting the best because u r dealing w/ a costco-assigned dealer. if i am reading correctly, $1500 over invoice is way too expensive....
  • patriciadsmithpatriciadsmith Member Posts: 8
Just a week ago I posted some info on this exact car...........the deal I got was 29,900 inclusive of all fees............and I financed the whole thing....if you can afford the extra payments its a good deal to finance everything given the VW credit 1.9% financing. you are paying practically nothing to use THEIR money!!! If you want any other details, I'd be happy to provide them.........Pat

That is about what I was looking for, and they said that was impossible. I knew it was BS.

Can I ask what state you got the car? I'm in Richmond, VA so I'm not sure if that will make much of a difference.

    Thanks for the help.

Took delivery last Friday on 2003 Passat W8 5-speed auto w/ sport pkg (Silverstone gray, black leather). List $39,975. Invoice $36,629. Paid $36,750. No trade-in. All done over the internet at my convenience (including credit application), after 1st soliciting quotes on-line. Only came in to sign the papers and pick up the car. Car was not in stock, but they found one in port to my specifications and had it shipped. To get this price, I had to finance through VW - which was fine with me, given the 1.9% rate. It might have been possible to get the price lower, given the incentives to the dealers from VW, but I was satisfied to get this below TMV without having to spend hours going back-and-forth. This was the best car buying experience I have ever had. Other than for a test drive, I will never deal with the guys in the show room again. Edmunds and the discussions on the Passat fora were a big help; thanks to all.

Can't say that I used Costco. I did try to use AAA to e-mail some internet/fleet managers. I bought my GLS wagon mid-Dec. What helped was I used an ad in the Friday Chronicle from Dirito VW to take to a dealer closer to me to haggle the price. MSRP was $25790, I drove away at just over $25100 out the door. That translates into about $900 under invoice for the car. I don't know how much things have changed in the past six months, but I'd say you definitely shouldn't be paying that quote. My suggestion is to get an idea of prices looking at the auto ads in the paper and contacting a few internet managers for their best price using the ads to your advantage.

I am purchasing tomorrow a 2003 GLS V6 Passat with leather, cold weather, monsoon, esp, and i believe one more option. Before taxes and tags, I was given a solid price of $26,775. I'm in Northern Va. I this a good price?

    Thanks!

    Carrie

PS: I am looking to get it in Blue Silver or Candy White.
  • 4petite4petite Member Posts: 30
Just wanted to correct my math that it was about $600 under invoice (that includes the $575 destination).
  • chrisbothchrisboth Member Posts: 493
Get them down to 26,000 - they wont let you walk. I got it all less the leather in 2001 with 5 sp for 24,500. The leather should only be 1k - 1200
  • chiphoggechiphogge Member Posts: 4
I've been quoted $30,025 plus taxes, title, tags, and processing on a black 2003 Passat GLX 4Motion with grey leather interior but without ESP.

You mentioned you got the ESP and fees for an "out-the-door" price of $29,900. The dealer said it would cost him $200 to get the car he quoted me on to his lot from another dealer and that ESP is not available.

Did you get a VW Owner's loyalty discount of any sort? (The salesman mentioned a $500 discount for previous VW owners.) Also, can I ask specifically where you went to get this deal? The salesman is telling me it is impossible to get that low with taxes, etc.

Any suggestions? Any advice from anyone would be greatly appreciated. Negotiating my first car purchase has been more strenuous than I planned for.

    Thanks.

Sorry, I didn't get to the boards yesterday...........I got mine in NH, I live in northern Maine and had to drive 300 miles (we really didn't mind as we have relatives in NH), but we did have some inconvience. I was offered that deal that you are talking about from one of the dealers, its not good enough, you can get it with ESP for the 29,900(at least!! and that included Doc fees) you may have to go to a high volume dealer, but there must be one somewhere in VA. go to the vw.com site and just email all the dealers and ask for quotes(thats what I did)or just tell them how much you'll pay....anyone that said they couldn't doit, I just said "thank you very much, good bye" No VW loyalty discount, I had a Jeep grand cherokee(kept it, so no tradein) ALSO, my dealer said, they have access to the VW inventory and his office just looks in the computer finds the car you want, calls and trades with the other dealer, and sends one of the crew to pick itup..........It took 1 day and I was only at the dealership 30 minutes to do the deal!.......It was a wonderful experience!
  • patriciadsmithpatriciadsmith Member Posts: 8
just reread your message........that price DID not include sales tax, as I had to pay that when I got back to Maine and NH has no sales tax.
  • fsucoyfsucoy Member Posts: 1
After a fair amount of due-dillegence, it seems to me that some of the best deals are available through internet managers. Just as I've seen on previous posts, you just send them an email stating the specs you want and they come back with a figure that you would otherwise only hear after some extensive haggling on the sales floor. My only question is, (for those of you who might be more acquainted with this approach than I), do internet managers usually provide a bottom-line, or near bottom-line, quote in order to move cars more effectively and efficiently? Or, do you still have wiggle room to negotiate the price down further?

In my case, I requested a quote for a 2003 GLS 1.8T Manual, with Lthr, Cold Weather, Monsoon, and Homelink -- all specifically requested in Silverstone Gray ext. / Black int. The dealer responded within a few hours several times, on a Sat. no-less, with a selling price offer of $23,194 -- nearly $300 below invoice, right off the first pitch -- and an 'out-the-door' price of $24,793.

Also, I'm curious about a 'processing fee' of $220. I know that destination charge, port fees, and a few others may be arguably bogus. But this 'processing fee' sounds suspiciously like a dealer-prep. fee, (i.e. another way for the dealer to fatten his/her wallet.)

Any thoughts on this deal, along with the curious 'processing fee'?

Thanks in advance, and Kudos to all who make this discussion board a truly valuable resource!

I read alot of tips on car buying and getting the best deal, I also used a worksheet on carbuyingtips.com to come up with what I thought was a fair price......I also wrote to this board several times. Then I wrote to all the internet managers that were located a reasonable distance from me. It took only one or two emails to get them to the out-the-door price that I felt was a fair one (maybe, I could have gotten a better deal if I'd kept haggling, but I HATE TO DICKER). I told them I didn't care what they added for fees as long as the bottom line price when I got there to sign the papers was what they quoted me. It worked like a dream and I ended up paying the exact amount I thought I should. Hope this helps.........Pat

I am about to buy a silver GLX Wagon Auto with ESP. Living in the heart of Silicon Valley I have not ventured into a showroom since some "delightful" experiences during the dot.com bubble - along the lines of being asked to give up your first born just for just test driving any German car.

Here's what I have put together based on the many helpful posts:

    Invoice
    - Base model: 27,910
    - ESP: 247
    - Destination: 575
    - Sub-Total I: 28,732

    Expected Dealer Fees
    - Port Prep: 25
    - Wholesale (Floor) Finance Reserve: 142
    - Advertising Association: 177
    - Sub Total II: 29,106

    Finance Terms
    - No trade in
    - Use 1.9 finance option
    - Deduct 500 incentive from invoice
    - Give hold back of about 600 to dealer
    - Do not pay any other fees (documentation prep etc)
    - Pay taxes and license plus registration fees

Putting all together I would be at a 28,606 payment to dealer plus tax plus license / registration, while using the 1.9% offer.

    Two quick questions:
    - Is this realistic given location and current sales/inventory movements? The least I want to do is haggeling for weeks with car salesman.
    - Is this an offer I should pitch as is to close-by internet managers?

    Many thanks in advance,
    Frank C

I am about to buy a 2000 GLX V6 with leather and all the extras, except the CD player, for 19,130. It has 33750 miles and is pretty clean. Does this sound about right? The TMV price is 19,717.

The actual Invoice for this Passat GLX Wagon with ESP is $29,076.00.

The $500 Customer Loyalty Voucher is only valid with a current DMV Registration for any Volkswagen, regardless of condition. And it is not necessary to trade this car in either...just show proof of ownership.

And I have advised people to simply use it as part of the Down Payment.

Thanks for the information. I used the edmunds.com information for calculating the base invoice (not TMV). Could you please let me know why your invoice is above the one I researched (GLX Wagon with Auto and ESP)?

    Thanks again,

Currently, I am think of purchasing a used 2000 VW Passat GLX. The car is fully load, everything that I am looking for, sunroof, disk brakes, tinted windows, etc. The car is sweet!!!!
My only problem the car has 64K in mileage and the dealer is asking $15,900. Does this sound reasonable.
I also checked Carfax, no accident, it was a leased car and only had one prior owner.

I checked Edmonds rating on the car, and some people love the cars others want to set fire to the automobile.

I have had my heart set on the VW Passat, but now I don't know...should I buy used or wait and purchase a left over 2003 at the end of the summer.
Please people give me some guidance on this issues!!!!

I'm in the market to buy a new Passat Wagon GLX, automatic and including ESP and I'm wondering what pricing people got on this model at dealers in Sunnyvale, San Jose, Fremont or Redwood City.

I did test drive the GLX and was quoted 200 over invoice. Did anyone close a deal on the above mentioned model with a dealer in the bay area and are you willing to share the pricing details?

    Thanks.

I just got a phone quote on a 2003 GLX 5 speed sedan in Blue Silver for $26,000. Edmunds has the invoice including destination at $26,936. Am I missing something or is this too good to be true?? I haven't even started negotiating yet and he comes out with almost $1000 under invoice. This includes 1.9% financing. Obviously they're still making money, but why would he go so low even before I push him on it. Maybe he'll go for even less if I threaten to walk!!
  • petepie1petepie1 Member Posts: 25
Newboy962, where are you located? I'm starting to consider an 03 GLX wagon with manual (can't find a GLS V6 with manual in the color I want), and am in the DC/MD/VA area. That sounds like a great price, please post again if you get it.
  • newboy962newboy962 Member Posts: 2
petepie1, I am in Boston. 2 other dealers I just checked with couldn't believe that price either as they were both over $1600 more each. I'll have to go see him with checkbook in hand to find out if he's pulling one on me or not.

    Petepie1:

Baltimore here. I do not know if this helps, but I just bought a GLS, 4 cylinder with the following options:

    -Automatic;
-Leather (which includes cold weather package); &
    -Monsoon system.

    MSRP - $26,475

    Invoice - $24,494

Which includes $200 Ad Fee, $92 Floor Interest, and $25 Port Prep not reflected on Edmunds invoice but on VW Invoice. According to Edmunds these are legimate charges and not negotiable.

Sales Price - $23,975 (exlcuding Tax, Tag & Title)

Which was $519 below invoice and $196 below Edmunds TMV.
  • petepie1petepie1 Member Posts: 25
Thanks for the feedback, umcp it sounds like you got a great deal, I can't believe they're selling for $500 under invoice (although the V6 wagon may be a different story). Where did you get your deal in Baltimore? I bought the Jetta from Russel in Catonsville, and at the time (2000), they had pretty competitive prices.

I hope you get your price newboy962.

Thanks to everyone for the pricing advice. FYI, I bought a 2003 GLX wagon, with a manual transmission and ESP for $27,400, it came to $28,000 even out the door (incl. all tags, taxes, doc fees, etc.). I'm in Northern Virginia. Very happy with it so far.

Anyone bought one of these in CT recently? Looking at GLX AWD specifically but any good (or bad) dealer experience and pricing would be informative.

I'm also curious about chiphogge's experience, did you buy the car already? THanks Pat Smith for her info, very helpful.

Also, is the 1.9% incentive going to continue in June?
  • CarMan@EdmundsCarMan@Edmunds Member Posts: 38,514
Hi ctneedwagon. Volkswagen has not released its June incentives yet. I should know more about what its June program will be like in a few days. Please check back with me then with a quick reminder and I will let you know what I have been able to find out. Although it is impossible to predict what a manufacturer will do with its future incentives with 100% accuracy, I suspect that Volkswagen will continue its 1.9% special financing relatively unchanged for the month of June.
