Forgot one important part of the price I got--the $27,400 price & $28,000 out the door on the GLX wagon was AFTER application of the $500 VW owner loyalty credit. Pete
Stohlman VW in Tyson's Corner was a easy purchase for me. I paid invoice plus invoice for the options I added on. They didn't even ask me for any of that undercoating, scotchguard, alarm options that Honda/Ford/Nissan/Chevy have all pushed on me. I was in and out in 2 hours and that included picking the car, getting credit through VW (I got their 3.9% over 5 years- so happy about that!!), prepping the car, they showed me the entire dealership (service center, body shop, wait room, etc) and had someone go over the entire car with me before I left the dealership. Overall I was very impressed and as an added touch- they sent me chocolate chip cookies as a thank you!
I e-mailed their internet dept. and was given a quote on one Passat but changed my mind on an option when I got there and was still given invoice. I worked with Tom G. but he also works with someone named Mike when he's not there.
They have a website but I don't think I'm allowed to post it.
Hope this helps!

I bought my wagon from Stohlman in Tyson's corner and second the recommendation. I shopped all the area dealers looking for a specific color combination and found Stohlman beat everyone else's price (College Park, Martens). It was an easy purchase, no pressure to buy extras, no hassles in the finance office. Congressional, Springfield, Karen Radley, and others didn't have the color/option combination I wanted so I didn't price them. I bought the wagon for $27,400 (after $500 rebate, before taxes, tags--total out the door was $28,000 after $500 rebate). Mine has 5 speed manual transmission, plus ESP. I think you can get better deals on the GLX sedans, especially if you want an automatic. Stohlman has a bunch of GLX's on the lot, so does Springfield VW. The guy at Marten's called back after I bought my car and said that they were offering their Passats for $3000 below MSRP, which brings it closer to invoice. Good luck finding the car you want, it seems like there are some good deals to be had out there if you buy off the lot. If you do go to Baltimore, I found that Russel had the lowest prices when I bought a Jetta in 2000.
After test driving the cars, I decided to go with a Passat Wagon, GLS 1.8T automatic with leather and ESP. Any suggestions on whether to go with the Monsoon system or not? Is it worth the $$ ? Is there a quality difference or just power difference? (not into playing music loud).
The first quote was 1% over invoice, which in her description includes the 575 dest and $267 fees (ad, port, floor plan?). Then options at invoice price, I assume.
From what I read in the posts, people are getting the car for invoice, or even below. What argument can I use for that? that they are getting 2% incentives (for instance) from manufacturer and thus making money even at invoice?
How much difference should I expect in price between buying off the lot and ordering?
I've learned a lot on all those things, especially those fees and how they may be negotiable, even if Edmunds says no, at a great site. Look up: "car buying tips" at a search engine and you'll get lots of valuable info for free. I don't recommend walking into a dealership without reading it first.
Can anybody tell me what extended warranties are out there from VW for a new Passat Wagon? I have been told via a dealer to come in to discuss but I do not want to go thru all that pressure! Prices?
Also, I have been offered 28400 (out the door) for a 03 Passat Wagon GLX Auto with ESP. I realize that invoice out the door would be 29000 for me in SC. So, the dealer is basically offering me invoice minus 500 VCI incentive. Has anybody bought under invoice?
Has anybody heard anything about June and July Incentives? How long will the VCI last?
Hi cuengineer. You can find a number of posts on extended warranties over on the Edmunds.com town Hall's Finance, Warranty, & Insurance Message Board. Rather than giving in to your local dealer's pressure to come in to talk about an extended warranty for your vehicle, you are free to purchase one from any Volkswagen dealership in the U.S. You can get several price quotes on coverage for your vehicle by calling, or even easier e-mailing numerous dealerships. Once you have gotten a few price quotes and have found an attractive one, you can always give your local dealer an opportunity to match.
As far as this model's current incentives go, for June VW is providing $400 dealer cash on 2003 Passat models that are financed or leased through Volkswagen Credit. If you are able to purchase this car for less than invoice then you are getting a very good deal. It is difficult to say what Volkswagen will do with its July incentives, but I don't anticipate them being much different than they are right now.
You can learn a lot about extended warraties at the website I mentioned in message #2120 and someone had posted about earlier. You can buy them online or at least get quotes from them and then ask the dealer to match them (dealers add on a lot of profit on them). The site also tells you what to watch out for in the coverage. You can buy the warranties online after you've purchased the car.
CarDeals reported that the 1.9% interest up to 60 months incentive continues for June.
Anyone bought a VW in CT/RI/Southern MA/NY lately?
I noticed on edmunds that the invoice price is 27910. does this price include the aditional vw fees like floor reserve, ad fee, etc. I have a dealer wlling to sell at invoice (27910) minus the 500 vci incentive. however, if these fees are in the invoice amount maybe i can negotiate and not pay these fees. any help out there?
I'm looking into buying a GLS 1.8t wagon in the next couple week. I live in the Portland, Oregon area. I visit one of the dealer today, an item on the sticker caught me by surprise. The regional adjustment is $985 and while TMV only show $78. Could anyone tell me why the big difference?
I'm currently shopping for a GLS 1.8T wagon with auto, monsoon, leather and ESP. The price from Edmunds' TMV is $25,423 while Carsdirect is $27,162, $1,800 above invoice. Why is the big difference? I used the same ZIP to do the search. Would appreciate your comment.
My wife just bought a silver GLS wagon yesterday -- 1.8T, 5 spd., leather, monsoon, weather. Out the door for $23,200 inc. destination and fees. Seemed like a pretty good deal considering she did well on her trade and it's well under TMV and a few hundred under invoice.
By the way, 1.9% for five years. It was hard to get financing details from VW ahead of time, but that's cheap money.
She was looking for an in stock GLS without the extra goodies, but these apparently don't exist unless you order the car.
Hope this helps.
We absolutely love it: roomy, plenty quick, safe, fuel efficient, fun to drive and fine looking. We were this close to a Subaru Forester or Outback but really think we made the right decision.
Enjoy your cars, everyone and thanks for all the advice on this board.
I have to second the comments about Stohlman VW in Tysons Corner. I purchased a new GLX sedan with ESP and a CD Changer for $28,500. In the D.C. area, the financing deals for the month of July are 1.9% over 24 months and 2.9% for 36 to 60 months. The financing terms do not require a down payment but applicants must have a credit score of 700 or higher to qualify for the best rate. My experience with Stohlman was great, they didn't try to ram extended warranties and undercoating down your throat like my wife's Toyota dealer. I worked with a salesman named Kim. She did a great job of explaining the car's features and walking me through the owner's manual. They have a large inventory of cars and they sell more volume than any other VW dealership on the East Coast. I would definately recommend them over Fairfax VW. They were terrible.
Hi everyone. I just wanted to let you all know that Volkswagen is currently providing 1.9% special financing for up to 60 months on the majority of its models. If you qualify for VW Credit's top credit tier and your dealer tells you that its rates are higher they are likely trying to mark up VW's base rate to add additional hidden profit to your deal.
I just picked up GLS 1.8T sedan, 5 spd, leather, Monsoon, ESP for $22K even plus sales tax. That included $500 VW loyalty (I drove an '01 Passat before) and the $400 VW Credit-to-dealer incentive.
High-volume dealers like Quirk were at $500-700 under invoice before the incentives -- you should be able to find a deal in that range before the 2004s get here, especially if you work from dealer stock. The best quote I got was $1000 under!
I'm seriously considering immediate purchase of a new '03 GLX sedan. Does anyone have recent experience with purchases in the San Francisco area? I'm ignorant of who is offering the best deals, and there are 34 VW dealers within 200 miles! Thanks for any help....
I am in the process of buying a Passat 4mo wagon and the prices I have been getting from the fleet managers have been below Edmund's listed invoice price by $400 to $500. I think there must be some kind of mfr to dealer rebate that is not published.
Of course the GLS w/ leather is cheaper than the GLX. The GLX comes standard with leather, Monsoon, climate control, etc. It is one step above the GLS. I don't know what you should pay in Mass, but I just bought a GLX in Wisconsin 2 weeks ago for $300 over invoice with 1.9% for 60 months.
I'm seriously considering buying a GLS sedan, 1.8T manual, loaded (leather, monsoon, ESP). I see that VW is offering 1.9% financing at 60 months, but doesn't anyone know about rates for shorter-term loans? I'd prefer 48 months max.
I can get 3.99%/48 mos. elsewhere, but if I can get 1.9% (or close) at 48 mos. from VW, obviously I'd go that way.
Curious about whoweare's $500 in loyalty money. Is this common throughout VW, or limited to certain dealerships? Also, does a history with VW Credit(leasing in my case) help with financing? Thanks!
In general, if you can get the same rate on a loan up to X months, you should get the X month loan, rather than anything shorter. You can always pay _more_ per month than your fixed payment, and pay that 60 month loan off in 48 months. You can't do the reverse. Essentially, the bank is offering you a free option to pay sooner or later - might as well take it.
I've heard from various sources that low rate dealer financing tends to be restrictive, often including prepayment penalties, etc. So paying off a 60-month loan early might not be so easy.
I'll try to pry the details out of the VW salesman.
You should certainly check, but I really doubt there are any prepayment penalties. If there are, that naturally changes the equation. If not, I still say take the 60 mos.
Man.that was a deal 4600 off the sticker price,If you are in CA can you please share the dealer details?Or is this happening from the VW company but will depend on the dealer,am i right? whats the normal catch in a dealer financing?I am planning on a GLS V6 soon..whats the true mileage that I can expect? thanks!
The dealer was in Fl. As far as this happening elsewhere I don't know. I did not see any "catch" with the dealer financing. They do ask you to buy gap ins, ext warr, lojack and something to protect the paint but it was not a hard sell. A simple no thank you and I was driving. As far as mileage someone else will need to take that question. Only 50 miles on the car..
I'm looking to buy used Passat, maybe a 2000 GLS automatic with about 45000 mi. Edmunds says such a vehicle has a retail dealer TMV of
$16,000 for outstanding condition $15,400 for clean condition $14,000 for average condition $12,500 for rough condition
Looking online, I'm seeing several similar cars from Boston area dealers going for just under $12,000 - one is a GLS with leather heated seats. Should I assume there is something grossly wrong with these vehicles, or is there something wacky going on with Boston area used Passat prices? Thanks for your help!
You might want to ask Terry over in Real-World Trade-In Values about a few of these, see what he thinks. Pricing from Edmunds can be useful and can also be wacky.
i have been working with internet sales managers for the purchase of a new passat 1.8T automatic w/monsoon sound & leather package the price that i have been offered:
$23864
includes $205 SDWVA (what's this?) $142 flooring (another charge?) $25 port prep
should i take this offer or try a little harder to get a better discount...the sales manager claimed the price was $800 below invoice..Thanks!
We bought a 2003 GLX Wagon (Auto) with ESP in the Milwaukee Area two weeks ago for $520 under invoice. I requested quotes via email from local dealers and that was the best one. There was no haggling, and no hidden costs once I was in the showroom. They didn't offer much on a trade-in, but still a pretty good deal. A lot different than last fall when they were getting close to MSRP.
mikeburk, don't know if you're still considering a '03 GLX Sedan. I recently purchased a GLX 4Motion wagon from Bob Lewis VW in San Jose. They have a huge selection (Sonnen VW in San Rafael also seems to have a big selection). If you go through their internet sales guy, they pretty much aim for Edmunds TMV pricing (approx. $450 over invoice). Not bad for the Bay Area. However, if you don't go through their internet guy and deal with the floor salesmen, you'll find that they have the nerve to tack-on to all their window stickers a higher "Dealer MSRP" than the MSRP VW is asking. Lot's of B.S. from the salesmen about "demand". Absolutely absurd, since no other VW dealer in the Bay Area does that.
Good info.Appreciate answer for couple of questions. How many Bay Area dealers did you check for invoice rates before buying your GLX?VW MSRP which we get from VW website-by how much did it differ from Bob Lewis? Also did you try some invoives through TechCU etc?Me planning to get a GLS-V6,auto from bayarea. Also heard that there are deals which goes well below Edmunds TMV..any comments?
Well, yesterday I bought a GLX wagon with ESP in SC for 26900 not including the $300 SC sales tax - the total deal was 27200. This is 1800 under invoice with little negotiation. Does this sound right for all you new GLX wagon owners?
james_ca,...I checked inventory and prices with about 6 vw dealers in the Bay Area. I wound up buying from Bob Lewis because they had on hand exactly what I was looking for (GLX 4Motion wagon, w/ESP, blue silver, leather, etc.) at pretty much the price I was looking to pay. This was a little over a month ago, and at the time, Edmunds placed the TMV for the car at about $450 over invoice. Right now, Edmunds TMV has the same car for a hair UNDER invoice, which makes sense to me, as the '04 models will be here soon. The price sschilf got for his wagon in SC is fantastic, I'd love to hear if anyone in the San Francisco Bay Area has gotten a similar deal.
Hi bardo_state,so the best thing for me would be getting internet quotes from dealer websites first.since as said floor sales wont work cheap.did you go through bob lewis finance as well?Do you know their deals?when are 2004 passats rolling out..looking for the best time to shop!thanks..
I am in the market for a GLX Passat. For a 2003 I was just quoted a price of $26,876 (excluding taxes/license) $29,407- out the door Los Angeles Area. This seems like a very good price below edmunds of $27,318. Thoughts on whether I should snatch this beauty up or wait for the 2004's. Thanks.
I recently purchased a new GLS automatic w/esp, leather, monsoon, and homelink for 23.5 (no trade in), and I am curious to find out what other GLS owners have paid.
james_ca,...I think the process that Edmunds and other folks suggest is a good one. Figure out exactly what you want and then get quotes from dealers before even showing up at their door. You can do that via the internet or by phone or by fax. Go for test drives all you want to help nail down what fits you best, but don't talk prices unless you've already done your homework. Know what your bottom line is and how much you can flex. If you're set on buying in the Bay Area (or any other location btw), you can check what VW dealers have in their inventory through VW's website. It has links to all their dealers and you can get a pretty reasonable snapshot of what is on hand at each shop (although sometimes they're slow in updating what's been sold...best to confirm by phone). Regarding financing deals, I have no idea what is going on at the moment. VW was pushing 1.9% financing last month, but personally I think that whole thing was such b.s. Call me cynical, but I phoned up VW Credit and they gave me all this backwash about "participating dealers only" and then somehow it was up to me to figure out which dealers were or weren't "participating". Even then the dealers played games with "you only qualify for this or that". You get different numbers from different dealers. Seriously. Not too hard too understand why America isn't VW's #1 market. Anyways, don't get sucked into a conversation about financing before you pin down a price. That's my rant on "financing deals". As far as next year's models, if memory serves, I think VW rolled out their new models at the end of September or early October last year (I could be grossly mistaken though). Anybody out there know for sure? I know other car makers like Volvo are already pushing their '04 models. IMHO the more flexible you are regarding the details of the car you're shopping for (color, upholstery, options), the better position you'll be for finding a really good deal in the next few months. Good luck!
I am looking for a resonable starting price for a new 2003 Volkswagen Passat GLX V6 4 Dr Sedan with 4motion in Alabama. Can anyone suggest what range i should be looking at in terms of pricing. Thanks in advance for your suggestion.
I had been looking for a 2003 Volkswagen Passat GLX here in NY. However, the last dealer I went to offered $27,995 on a GLX w/ 4 motion (w/ 1.9% financing). This is a better price than some of the initial discussion I had with dealers about the base GLX. They have a few in stock and the cars are not demos (brand new). Apparently the dealer is trying to move them because they were not big sellers. The dealer has an Audi dealership on the same lot and apparently Audi's Quatro is a much better seller for them. Sounds like a good deal to me. I'm going back to one more dealer to see if they can beat the offer(which I doubt).
$27,995! That's a really, really good price. Do you have your pick of the few they have on hand or is it limited to a specific car? You might want to take a peek at the sticker on the driver's door jamb of each of those cars to see when each was built. I think if you add a month or so from that date, you'd get a decent guestimate of how long they've been sitting on the dealer's lot. Regardless, I'd be interested to hear from folks whether anyone has seen any deals that are even better. WOW!
bardo_state.thanks for that detailed explanation! I got a quote from for a GLS V6 auto, monsoon, leather for $24,659 in bayarea. This works a little different though..This person gets some direct factory prices...So he doesnt have a large no of inventory at his place(in steeven's creek)I haven't been there though..
Does anyone know how good is Electronic Stabilization Program (ESP)???
Also the standard wheel size for GLS V6 is 15",what will be impact on gas if I want 16" or 17" wheels?
I've been looking for a GLX 4-motion/ESP wagon in San Diego/Orange County for the last few weeks. No one has them in stock. I'm told customers in SoCal just don't want it. I guess no one down here drives much in the Mountains and Snow, although it surprises me given the number of skiers. The dealers tell me they can get the car from dealers up north, but the prices from numerous dealers has been well above the Edmunds TMV price ($500 to $1000 above TMV). This is, in essence, a few hundred above invoice. Maybe this is still reasonable. I can't get any of these phenomenal deals that others are quoting (a thousand or more below invoice). Don't know if any others have had similar experiences. Supply and demand, I suppose. The GLX sedan 4-motion-ESP seems to be in larger supply down here than the wagon.

SC Sales Tax 300

I have talked him down to 28400. It would be a no brainer if I could get him below 28000. My offer was 27500.
Are there other incentives out there? Any more fat to trim?
When do 2004's come? Would I get a better deal on a 2003 if I wait till then?
Any help would be appreciated!
Thanks
Thanks
Baby on the way, weighing the options and price of the Passat. We love the BWM and are considering the VW, Accord, BMW 3 series (4 dr) and Mercedes.
We live in CT and would consider the V6 AWD passat.
What are the overall impressions of the VW for the price as well as any info from CT dealers with prices would be helpful.
Thanks,
